---- Short History ----
- Set upon the site of an Iron Age fort. Llansteffan has been inhabited for millennia.
- The current castle was built by the Normans during their invasion of Wales after 1100.
- And was granted to the Marmion family.
- But in 1146, Maredudd ap Gruffydd of Wales captured it from the forces of the FitzGerald’s who were the leading Norman settlers of the region.
- The Normans managed to capture it again in 1158.
- It was in 1192 that the de Camville family refortified the castle with stone and added two towers.
- But Llywelyn the Great managed to recapture it for the Welsh in 1215.
- It was after this attack that the Normans added the Inner Gate and a round tower.
- During the 13th century it was captured by the Welsh and then the Norman de Camville family several times.
- And in 1257 the de Camville family added the Lower Ward. This included the Great Gatehouse, the Great Hall and the East Bastion.
- But by the 14th century it was in ruin.
- In 1403 and again in 1405 it fell to Owain Glyndwr, only to fall to the English in 1408.
- It was later granted to the Crown and the two-tower Gatehouse was converted into a residence.
- It was during the late 15th century, the Tudor Era, that the Barn was added, possibly over the site of the Great Hall.
- The 18th century Castle had only survived as part of a private farm.
- It was romanticism and tourism that kept it alive through the 19th and 20th centuries.
- It is now privately owned but open to the public.
