Join Anna and Alf in this video as they visit LLECHWEDD SLATE QUARRY in BLAENAU FFESTINIOG in NORTH WALES UK which is known as THE TOWN THAT ROOFED THE WORLD and which is now home to the famous tourist attraction LLECHWEDD SLATE CAVERNS and is part of THE UNESCO SLATE LANDSCAPE OF NORTHWEST WALES.

In this video Anna and Alf walk around the slate mountains of this famous town while Anna teaches some history of the place that shaped the look and feel of the world as we know it and shares about the way of life which defined generations of families here in North Wales and how WELSH SLATE has been coveted since ROMAN TIMES and used by THE ROMANS in their FORTS NEARBY .
The story of slate began 500 MILLION YEARS AGO with deposits of mud and clay on an ancient seabed but it wasn't until the rise of the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION that demand for it really exploded and at its peak, the SLATE INDUSTRY IN WALES employed an army of 17,000 men and WELSH SLATE was exported AROUND THE WORLD throughout the 19TH CENTURY and the slate, the best of which is considered a dark variety dating from THE ORDOVICIAN PERIOD around 480 MILLION YEARS AGO, was prized for its durability and is found in the roofing of LONDON'S WESTMINSTER HALL, THE ROYAL MINT and BUILDINGS IN COUNTRIES AS FAR AS AUSTRALIA .
Learn how after the slate industry declined here in LLECHWEDD QUARRY it became a major tourist attraction in the form of LLECHWEDD SLATE CAVERNS .
Anna as always, also teaches some Welsh pronunciation and Welsh words in this video.

God bless you for making this ! God bless all whom worked there .my home town.my real home .! Upon which for over 63 years our family.of Jones.! Dunn. & Roberts, grandfather,-father,uncle's.cuzzons,all worked in named mines .and all passed over - way too young as a result of at least some damaged heath caused from the mines. So I say . Anna Alf. We had our slate roof replaced with the new man made slate but should have kept the old original slate roof on. Looked a lot better, another great Welsh history lesson 🥰👌👍

Another great bit of history, Anna. I like that it was Welsh slate that roofed the World. It just shows the quality and amount that was quarried. 12p a day. I wonder how that converts with inflation. I've worked out that 12p in 1800 would be £12.86 a day in today's money. So even adjusted for history, it was a poor wage. It makes you wonder how much other workers over the UK were paid at this time. Think of how much the land owners made at the expense of the humble worker. Thank you for opening our eyes to the massive contribution by Wales to the World.

Slate is such an important part of your area, Anna and Alf! From roofs to pavement to grave stones! We enjoyed visiting this beautiful and historical area with you both. Great job in relaying the history Anna. Just today we visited an old mining town here that didn't survive. Work for it's preservation is underway by volunteers. Loved seeing this one which is so much better preserved! Thanks for bringing us along.

Hi Anna and Alf! You’re great at teaching us Welsh history and language… thanks! It’s so interesting to learn about the slate business and mining. It was very hard work for the miners, and very long hours too! I didn’t realize that slate came in several colors. In our area I think people might have slate floors… they look very nice and durable. We’ve seen some slate roofs in Europe… they’re amazing! So interesting to see where most of the slate that went round the world came from! I have always loved slate roofs. So many beautiful views of the mountains. Love that secret waterfall. Nice pick of Alf pointing at the slate mountains. Great view of the old building. Interesting to learn about the area was the first town in Britain to have electric streetlights. Also, wonderful narration and history. Have a nice weekend Anna.

Hello Anna my dear friend, today I visit the old mine at Lane Eiffel in North Wales inyour clip, it's very nice to see and the old history of the mine that you described in the clip. And I really like your voice, Anna, your voice is very cute, this mine has a lot of history, and miners numbering over 4000 is a very large mine. And I love hidden beautiful waterfalls. Hi Anna! I distinctly remember seeing the slate quarries from a distant while driving from Birmingham to Wales. I've some lovely clicks of the mountains from afar😊. I didn't get a chance to visit the quarry though. Thank you for taking us along an incredibly picturesque trail, along with interesting historical anecdotes. I have a lot of memories from this place, in particular as we always had to face the local rugby team, they were big rivals for a while 😅 and the fact it really is in the middle of nowhere, peaceful and secluded
