LLF S01E02 Long Lost Family
Sorry about the video quality. It was like that on the Dutch website I downloaded it from, so there's nothing I can do about the quality or the Dutch subtitles.
Here's what it says at the end according to Google translate:
"Shaun and Wayne meet a few times a month. Shaun has been introduced to Wayne's family."
"Debbie will soon travel to Arizona in order to meet her son and his family. They look forward to the time ahead."

Not exactly. You missed something telling: after a short pause, Wayne adds confidentially to Davina, "No," and _giggles_ nervously. She then tells him where his father is waiting. Wayne really opened up to Davina, which others have already noted.

Much respect for Shaun; you can tell he's experienced a lot of growth in his life. What a good man, not at all like Wayne's family had made him out to be. These two men deserve so much happiness. Especially when one is young, naive, inexperienced. Girls of her class in all countries were mostly conditioned/indoctrinated that their only choice was to find a husband. They felt pressured into marriage or felt the demands of family and/or society to be married. Women after decades of so called liberation still feel incomplete without a man which is astonishing. This is why I HATE to hear divorced people and their family members running down a parent in front of the child. It is so important to understand a child feels like they are part of that parent. If you tell them Dad was shit... they feel like they are shit as well. Or that mom was a cheap floozy.... same thing. If you love a child or grandchild you keep your mouth SHUT and let the child form their own opinion later.

This is my favourite episode among several. Mainly because the father son story hits very close to home. No matter how often I watch this I cry like a baby. It is good however because it tells me that even at my age this wound will never completely heal. It is something one lives with and accepts. But I know that I am not alone and when I see how Shaun and Wayne's faces change from anger, despair, pain to smiles, love and peace it gives me hope and comfort. I see how guarded Wayne is terrified to be hurt and disappointed masked by his military machismo, difficult for him to let go and relax but ultimately he is like someone transformed. I have no illusions, they can never make up for the lost time. Childhood can never be caught up or made right. The most one can hope for with these two men is closure of the past and some of the wounds and hopefully build some present relationship based on affection, love and mutual respect. On another point though...... Human beings are vulnerable and weak especially faced with their own sexuality. Aside from the brutal haranguing of religion preaching hell fire and damnation there was no sensible teaching of responsibility and the consequences of one's actions. It is a dilemma but the fact is that had people been more responsible and educated to the realities of acting out on their sexual passions there would not have been tens of thousands of poor unfortunate babies born into such unhappy circumstances. This is not a "moral" judgement just a rational and logical fact. It is the curious nature of the human being and especially a child or teenager that the more you forbid and threaten the more they will do the opposite. But people basically are irresponsible which is why in the past 60 years the world population has well more than doubled without thought to the consequences to the planet, the society or the innocent children brought into a world and societies that can barely sustain them.

Sorry, but I am angry at Paul for his senseless prejudice against David. Couples adopt complete strangers' children all the time and successfully blend them into the family with their biological children. Paul would not consider keeping a child that was biologically his wife's. If I was Debbie I would have chosen the single mother route rather than stay with a man who had rejected my baby, no matter what the circumstances of his birth were. To let that baby go and never hear of him again for 26 years is unimaginable to me. This was the saddest Long Lost Families episode I have seen. As a child about 5 years old I remember one day playing in our back yard - my younger brother and I - with five other children. They were neighbors and my mother and their mother had developed a friendship. Three of the five children were biological children of this woman and her husband. The other two had been adopted from some country where the couple had lived and done a church mission assignment for two years. They were having coffee in the yard watching us children play when another neighbor Mom came over with her two children who immediately joined us in the sandbox. At one point we children had stopped playing and come over to the table to get some lemonade and I heard the mother who had arrived last, saying to the mother of the five children - "You adopted children, didn't you?" "Which ones are the adopted ones?" The mother of five looked over at the group of children sipping their lemonade, thought for a moment, and then replied "You know - I don't remember". Of course she remembered - the point she was making was that it was so unimportant to her which ones were adopted and which ones were biological that she just didn't even think about it any more. It's a shame that Paul couldn't have found that within himself.

@globalman
@globalman 3 года назад
Sadly you seem to have missed the point. But unless you lived in that village at that decade or had great empathy you would not understand. She did what seemed best for the baby and her own survival. People make choices all the time. Without being able to see into the future we can only hope the choice is right but there is never a guarantee. Looking back from a future point with more life experience is no advantage. Unless you have walked in her shoes you cannot judge. What you remember from the age of 5 I doubt is very objective or even fully accurate. In any case the situations are wholly not the same. They made a free choice to adopt. She misguidedly had an affair and he was ambushed by this reality. He tried but he couldn't do it. I think it was honest of him rather than grudgingly raise the child possibly unable to really love the boy. Many children grow up in such homes feeling unwanted and unloved, even by biological parents. That is much worse because they always feel they have done something wrong not knowing it was the emotional/psychological issues of the parent.

"Well done, mate" the father , Shaun says and smiles when he sees his son (Wayne) in uniform. "He's a good lad". How terrible that "society" --especially the other family -- told him to forget he had a son. I hope that people nowadays will try to counsel a young father on how to BE a father -- to grow him into one -- if he is not ready. . .and do this for the sake of the heart-hurt their grandchild will go through if their bio parent is shut out. Btw, Nicki is so great at handling these delicate situations, so non-judgmental, so non-threatening in his approach-- as is Davina, also, of course. We could all learn a lesson (I know I could) from Nicki and Davina about how to bring up "hot" topics with our kids, so we don't "push their buttons" unwittingly. Anybody notice that when Davina and Nicki ask, "Are you ready?" The father and son BOTH answer with the exact same words, no more, no less: "As ready as I'll ever be." Interesting! P.S. Can anyone explain to me why my text has lines running through it? I don't put them there.

This story particularly hits me and awakens heartache. Fathers and abandoned sons. This lad seems to have managed his life better than I did. His facial transformation from the beginning and when after he meets his father is profoundly moving. Heart warming that two such macho types in the end could so sincerely embrace each other and express their emotions with tears. Not common in the western world especially among military men. I hope they can build some kind of relationship. Or at least that Wayne can move on with his life. Both father and son are obviously damaged emotionally and psychologically. Maybe they can help each other. It did not happen with me and my father but hey, I am forever the optimist. Hope springs eternal. Not sure why it was so difficult to trace Shaun as he was back in the area they searched?? And what does that mean Shaun contacted them because he heard through the grape vine that they were searching him?? There is more to that story. Possibly the parents said they had not heard from him in 4 years only as a way of putting them off to protect his privacy. What some comments have ignored was what he said about when Wayne's mother got pregnant. She went to his parents like a a fury in a rage. He was young and perhaps troubled and they forbade him from seeing or going near her. Possibly her parents threatened him. The things we see with experienced, mature eyes are not the reality of very young people. I am amazed how many people forget their own follies of youth. The story of Jonathan and his mother was heart rending and heart warming at the end. He is a handsome, beautiful and sensitive young man it seems. He looks very much like his birth mother. A pity that all such stories don't all end as well as these stories have.

Clearly your birth mother was a feckless person who did not take responsibility for her life or the life of her children. I am thankful that children are taken off of incompetent parents like your mother - and always hope it is before too much damage is done. I am sorry for the five children that were left with her and wish they had the same opportunity you did. These reunions don't always have a happy ending - but you can now go on with your life, know your biological history, and be thankful for how your life was blessed with the great parents and family you got. It can work both ways. My friend finally found the daughter she gave up for adoption when she 19 and unmarried. At first - everything was incredible. The daughter even moved in with her. As time went on she realized the daughter was a pathological liar and a thief - later diagnosed as manic depressive. This had nothing to do with the adoptive parents - who were wonderful and successfully raised two other children. However, the lies the daughter told about the adoptive parents were believed at first - until my friend flew out to meet them and really got to know all of the story. I could write an epistle here of some of this child's escapades - but one them involved her intentionally hiding in a storage closet at her elementary school when she was 8 and thought it was great fun that the entire town and the police was out looking for her that entire night. The stories got much worse after that. Another friend, who was adopted, found her birth mother who refused to meet her and wanted no contact. She felt a terrible sense of rejection. However - on a positive note - another friend found her son - and it is has been a wonderful reunion and they are now travel to visit each other and are very close. And still another friend found both of her birth parents and now has an extremely close relationship with her birth mother, who is the spitting image of my friend. My children's father is adopted - and it is quite strange to give birth to children where half of their ancestry and genealogy is unknown and missing. At least you can now give that information to your own children - and while it may not be a pretty picture - you know it. Be thankful for that. I think never knowing is much worse for most people.

Amazed to read how many people watch but don't pay attention or really hear what is said. Especially regarding the mother and her mixed race boy. It was a brutal decision she had to make. Whether we agree or not it was the man's choice to not want another man's baby especially being mixed race at a time when it would have been very difficult in society. The challenges would have been horrific in a village or small town. She could not have raised the boy alone in her circumstances. Single mothers with illegitimate children were not accepted in society in most places at that time. I suspect even the adoptive parents broke up ultimately because mixed race marriages at that time were not common and little accepted. In the deep south of the usa such relationships and marriages were illegal and they could easily be shot dead if they were in public. Unless you lived through those times and knew personally how people thought and reacted you cannot understand. But some attempt at compassion and empathy here would be recommended to those of you who seem unconscious to reality.

Yes it is often the case. The fellow was young, inexperienced and intimidated by the two families who sabotaged the lives of the two young people and the baby. Had the families supported them emotionally and helped them to make their way the story would have been different. Such stories are very complicated and have more than one truth. Everyone lied especially to the son who had a completely wrong image and attitude toward his father until the letter and then meeting him. That is the real tragedy, how adults manipulate and poison the mind of an innocent child because of their own arrogance and egos.

This is an amazing story. Many years ago why did they take the children and tell them they can never contact or see the child again. It's disturbing and it's terrible to know some children where beaten and abused. It's crazy that still to this day kids that are put up for adoption or children that are in CPS are abused.
@globalman
@globalman 3 года назад
Yes you are right but the problem has many sides to it. Mainly most people who have children shouldn't. Many people who are parents are not emotionally or psychologically healthy and incapable of giving a child what it needs. They pass on what they got from their parents. Most human beings should not have children. Just because you can procreate does not mean you should. And that is why there are so many children who end up in terrible and vulnerable circumstances. Abusive parents or adoptive parents are people with serious psychological problems but no one evaluates people before they have children. Even adoption agencies are unable or unwilling to do expert investigation into an adoptive family. Many abusive parents put on a good face and act so it is not easy to know who they really are.

It was a different time back then seems for both of these families and then for Sean he was not allowed to even speak to the girl after you got her pregnant doesn't even make sense but I bet her family didn't like his family so there you go see end up with a kid who everybody knows is basically from the wrong side of the tracks and that's why he was probably wondering who he was because of what everybody had said about his dad and luckily this woman found a home for her child for he would not be raised in prejudice and he could live out his youth hopefully in a better situation because from what she said if she had tried to raise him without her husband where she came from he would have been treated very poorly you can't rebuild the past all you can do is move forward in the future and that's where people with these relationships have to realize the child isn't going to love you for the past for the future

Lisa ...... she did not only spare herself but her baby who would have grown up in a very hostile environment and probably would have suffered massive discrimination and bullying. With Hindsight it is very easy to judge but unless you have lived in a certain society, town or village you have no idea what it was like. Everyone seems to miss the point, she did not choose the husband over the baby as that marriage ended. She made a choice that the baby might have a better life with proper parents. A mixed race child was difficult enough but being illegitimate made every child a target for persecution not only from other children but all society. Not until the mid to late 1970's did that begin to change in Big cities. But make no mistake there are still places, especially in rural or Bible Belt USA where a single woman pregnant will be shunned and would only have a chance if she could move and find work in a big city. .

There are a vast amount of half sibling relationships in the world and they work out just fine. I never judged her negatively, but stated that the concept is completely foreign to me. The bond between a mother and child should be stronger than anything else. She was a weak woman. I don't know how she could look him in the eye and respect him after that. Be happy for her? that’s freakin’ terrible - especially in this day and age. so many mixed couples of all creeds and so many adoptions. there’s a woman in Harlem who fostered then adopted two white kids and she’s fierce about her loving them and mentions the prejudice she meets from people where she lives. these are my kids and they need me. (they are sister and brother with disabilities). She is just amazing! i knew a woman from Holland 26 yrs ago who fostered two mixed race sisters. it took her 2 years to finally and truly adopt them. one was 4 and the other 2 when she able to take them to Holland!! how dare people mention racial stuff like that now!!! Jonathan(David) is a wonderful (and handsome) man!! the mum is so happy and proud to finally see him!! and i’m so very glad Shaun and his son, Wayne, have met and bonded so tightly. he deserves to know his son! they look so amazingly alike. and when asked, “are you ready?” they both said “ready as i’ll ever be.” totally incredible!! :) this is a beautiful episode!! thank you so much :) 🌷👶🏻👶🏽

I did wonder if they have child support (or the equivalent) in their country. Single mothers have much more support than ever before in America. It’s been this way since the 1980’s. As much as I love my husband, I could never walk away from my kids for him. I have to believe he would never ask that of me. I do fully support adoptions and believe she did the best she could. As #3of 4 kids born in the US between 1047 and 1953 it is hard for me to understand the number of young girls having babies while still in school. I understand the need to protect the adoptive families yet it is quite clear that the emotional stress in the UK over adoption is very different than here. Perhaps the biggest thing is that in the USA we don’t place soo much pressure on heratige, and more on who you choose to mature into. Our Social Services Support is much better it seems so these kids grow up well adjusted and in secure , loving families. Of course, there are always exceptions to anything. I sincerely hope all of the UKkids and parents have secure and loving relationships in the future GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM.

I don't think it is just a UK thing. Any woman who gives up a child will always feel that bond and love and wonder if the child had a happy life. Also any children who know they're adopted, like the soldier in this episode who always felt so different from his family,want to know about their bir th parents and what they are like and why they were given up, and if they were thought about and loved. I Feel it's a human thing and not a cultural thing. At least more times than not. You do us e those who have no I retest in finding the parent or child, but this show is not for that type. Gail, Where on earth have you gotten this very misleading information? Maybe you don't place emphasis on who you are and where you came from, but most adoptees do-that is a universal truth globally concerning we who are adoptees. And you should correct your typo-I believe that you meant 1947-1953... (1047 is 19 years before the start of 1066, when England was ruled by Edward the Confessor. By the end of the year, a Norman - William the Conqueror - was king after defeating Edward’s successor, Harold, at the Battle of Hastings. BTW, William is my direct ancestor..... something I was never supposed to know according to law and courts in the state in which my adoption took place at 5 1/2 years of age.) I was born in 1945, the first of three children of my parents-parents who abandoned me and my little sister in 1948... our brother -middle child-was kept with our parents until ca 1949-50. So I am well aware of the era in which you must have slept thru to miss the young grils, who had flings in the haystacks or back seats of cars, were sent to maternity homes where they delivered their babies and were forced to relinquish custody of thier child-most regretting that for thier life spans. And who has obviously had no contact with social services! In my elementary school we had a janitor who was a pedophile-creepier than any Hollywood film portrayal. He impregnated at least one of the students -an older sister of one of my 7th grade classmates. It is quite obvious that you know nothing about social services -ether then or now-or the horrible trauma of being separated from one's mother and family and sibs. It is also obvious that you have no clue about adoptees who have their identity stolen and their records denied them-including an original birth certificate. You didn't watch your brother being taken away in the car with your parents or watch as some huge goon took your sister out of your arms screaming in terror! You didn't suffer the abuse of DSS and the courts and adopters who abused in ways no child should know or suffer through. Adjusted? Secure? Loving Families? Bosh! Humbug! You also obviously missed courses in biology and the advent of DNA.. or the girls in your class that suddenly disappeared for six months or mere later returning with no explanation... Adoptees spend their childhood and often the rest of their life looking for someone who resembles them.. asking themselves if the woman walking next to them could be their mother... Do you know that only 9 states in the US allow an adoptee access to his/her own birth certificate? Do you know anything about ACE (Adverse Childhood Events) scores and adoptees? Do you know that adoptees are 4 times more at risk for suicidal attempts in the US than the general population? Of course you don't! (It is the adoptee's identity that is kept hidden in the UK as well as in the US and Europe. this so we cannot have access to our own families.. but wen someone is victimized, usually we find a way to fight back! At least the UK has come to the sense that adoptees have the right to know who they are and who their families are... and have specially trained and licensed researchers who act as intermediaries who are paid by the government to retrieve the information. In the US that information is verboten in 42 states-including the usually progressive state of California. I would suggest that you climb out of Lala land and become educated about adoption in the US. In the meantime, I suggest even more strongly that you refrain from discussing that which you have little to no understanding of. By the way ms ignorant one, it is DNA that rules who we are and what we become-DNA which comes from our parents which was passed on from eons of ancestors before them-50% from mum; 50% from papa.
