In this LMGlab episode, we're taking on the Porsche 996turbo S for a real treat!
Every 911 is an instant classic, even the unloved 996:-) To keep classic cars in shape and enjoyable, there are a few things to pay attention to, we shall cover some of them in the future LMGlab 996tt episodes.
The legendary Hans Mezger did his magic with the beautiful 450hp M96/70 dry sump flat six, but without the ability to put all that power down in a contolled and driver friendly manner, it's just numbers and facts.
A good suspension is a game changer.
Why did we go for a Bilstein B16?
I actually fell in love with the b16's after having once used it as my spare suspension in my race car many years ago. I remember being very nervous about using a new suspension on a race, without even trying or setting it up before.
The b16 prooved it simplicity, as I could set it up perfectly in just three(!) practise runs before the race! Having the combined setting for bump and rebound makes it easy to adjust and just a few click transformation from a racecar to a comfortable cruise:-)
So I'm actually looking forward to test and adjust the b16 on the 996tt, I'll document how I do it and also tell what settings I'm using.
I also promised the crucial tightening torques, needed when performing the 996tt suspension job, here are the data:
-Spring strut to wheel carrier 100Nm
-Spring seat clamp 10Nm
-Spring strut mount to body 33Nm
-Spring strut mount to piston rod 80Nm
-Sway bar link to shock strut 50Nm
-Brake cover plate 10Nm
-Brake disc oh hub 10Nm
-Brake caliper to carrier 85Nm
This is not a definitive guide, plase do your own research and only perform this if you are qualified. I'd be happy if you shared your way of doing it, other solutions or suggestions for my next videos.
