This is part 3 of the LML Duramax 6.6 liter Head gasket replacement. In this portion of the series I finally have the head removal achieved. All in all I only have roughly 10 hours into the repair. The cylinders heads are currently at the machine shop getting surfaced. I have yet to experience any cracking on the LML engine head. I typically see that on the earlier model Duramax engines. Part 4 will show case the CP3 conversion, head stud install, and cylinder head torque and sequence.

Thank you. If this is the first time it can seem a little scary at first but once you get into it, it is not as bad as it seems. The hardest bolts are the driverside valve cover bolts next to the firewall and that cylinder head bolt. If you do studs just remember to install the last lower stud as you are putting the head on because it will cause the head to hit if you do not.

There will be one, maybe two, more videos of this series as I am doing the CP3 install with the head studs and heads then the last video will probably be a final completion with start up and torque specs on stuff. Also, this is getting a train horn and there will be a train horn install.

Can you specify exactly what the machine shop did to the head? Thanks

They pressure tested the heads to ensure no leaking valves and then they machined/decked the surface of the heads to make sure that it was flat and true.

I have never done something this difficult before, do you think head would come off with leaving turbo and down pipes on. It may be a dumb question ?
@operationoverhaul
@operationoverhaul Год назад
Turbo, maybe but down pipe I would say would need to come off just access a couple of things
@operationoverhaul
@operationoverhaul Год назад
after thinking about you would not be able to because you need to remove the intakes off of each head and they will not clear the turbo so the turbo has to come off.

I have removed heads off of 2012 with turbo in it I Just removed both up pipes and downpipe. Also left the manifolds on heads for easier removal on exhaust manifolds both outside of the engine bay! It’s definitely a fun job 👍🏼 nice info on the video bro! Definitely subscribed

@@camerickson4831 thanks for the information. I have never done it that way and was not completely sure if it was possible. I appreciate the view and subscribe.

How much do you charge for a job like this one?
@operationoverhaul
@operationoverhaul Год назад
I normally charge 3200 to 3500 for the labor on one. Then the parts vary depending on which brand you choose for gaskets, fluids, and head studs if you go that route.

You seem to have alot of experience with the lml. I suspect my valve seals are leaking oil and causing blue smoke in the morning. Do you think its possible to replace seals without taking the head off?
@operationoverhaul
@operationoverhaul Год назад
Yes, you can replace them without removing the head. Once you remove the valve covers, injectors, and rocker arm shafts you need to apply air to the cylinder you are working on and use a valve spring compression tool to remove the valve spring and retainers and then you will gain access to the seals. This is the way I normally do them. Now to do them all it calls for like 25 or 26 hours of labor depending on if you have a dual or single alternator.

Thanks. Never done this before. I think I’m gonna go for it. Trying to save myself some labor costs
