I was just wondering because i just got a neighbor talked into selling his 2002 chevy Silverado 2500 with a Duramax diesel hes going to sell it to me based on scrap prices and it he said it needs head gaskets he was just planning on scraping it

Question I have a coolant leak on my 2002 Duramax . Very dirty overflow reservoir. My local shop can’t find a leak and wants ma to take it to a shop that has a diesel specialist. I am not having a over heating issue. I’m ready to order a new truck but it’s 4-6 months. What should I do to try and get this truck to last6k miles? Honestly it’s driving fine for 315k miles. It might not even be a head gasket ideas?

Hold up only I mean only as apr has said lube one side of the washer and not the other otherwise you can over tq them and break a stud

Nice work! Always feels good to not only fix the problem but upgrade while you’re at it. Did he drive the truck down? When my brother in law blew his duramax head gaskets it wasn’t very noticeable at all just a little coolant would slowly disappear but as soon as you towed something it was obvious something wasn’t right.

You pretty much nailed it, the truck actually drove just fine, and towed fine as well, but it slowly ate coolant, and the radiator hose was constantly pressurized.

@@ReignitedAuto If the upper hose is rock hard in the morning after sitting overnight, that's pretty much all the diag you need.

No we didn't take them to a machine shop. We weren't having any issues with overheating so I wasn't worried about the surface of the heads being warped. Just cleaned the remaining gasket material from them and put them right back on. Truck has been driving great! 👍

Stick welding nuts to broken studs makes for short time.

Tried and failed this time, these bolts had become one with the manifold lol

@@ReignitedAuto I only did this for iron blocks. Aluminum alloy blocks maybe more difficult I'm not sure. Greater heat dissipation with aluminum.

Yes it is, in fact some people prefer to do it that way. Pulling the cab is easier for me so that's the direction I chose. 👍

So cab removal is required just to replace the replace the head gaskets 😮

Nah, you can do it with the cab on. I just find it easier to take it off.

I used to argue this to, but after many years of this, I have no desire to lay on my sternum all day every day. Way easier on your body and cleaner yo yank the cab or pull the motor
