Good that you managed to sample LNER on this short sector. Sometimes the onboard crew are unable to serve any catering (for one reason or another) so you were lucky. The seating on these Azuma trains was specified by our government and not the operator. Many have complained. Note that the word "Azuma" and the colour scheme were specified not by LNER but by previous franchise holder VTEC (Virgin Trains East Coast). VTEC had to 'hand back the keys' because it couldn't afford to pay the franchise fees and our government took over and named its operator LNER (which is an historical and famous train firm from the 1930s). LNER has its own livery now and it is applied only to a few 225 trainsets ... it is similar to that featured by British Rail in the 1980s (when the 225s were introduced).

Agreed, stations are a huge part of travel. Knowing what a place looks like ahead of time can save crucial minutes if you're running late.

Great review, very useful. (Though at 8.30 it's Alexandra *Palace*, not Place - if you were sat on the left you'd see the palace as you went by).

Ha, must've missed that typo. Actually seeing the palace would've been great, but the solo seats were only on the opposite side of the train.

But it's such a short ride and most travellers would probably have taken Thameslink on this sector. LNER is famed for its full breakfast service had Lonestar Trip remained on board for an onward destination.

@@alexmcwhirter6611 From what I could see on the menu, the full breakfast wasn't offered on this journey, regardless of destination, as the dish menu doesn't include the full breakfast as an option. My next train from Peterborough to Doncaster was offering the Dine menu, which does include the full breakfast.

@@LonestarTrips True. A departure at 0930 (9.30 am) must be the cut-off point for serving a hot breakfast. As your train was heading for Edinburgh I would suspect that lunch would be served onboard later.

Perhaps you should do Lumo that operates low cost rail service from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley with minimal stops except serving Newcastle.

I think you might be mistaking first class on an airline with first class on a UK train. For £38 single, you can't expect silver service.

LNER advertised and failed to deliver. I call that failure on their part. Perhaps it's ok if a customer is told 38 quid please and you say sure, here's 20, let's call it even.

I hope we all call out LNER for this bait and switch food tactic. I had exactly the same experience - sorry, no hot food, bla bla. Well, in corporate-speak, if they get away with it once, you better believe it'll be a bad practice real soon. I wonder who has had a decent actual hot cooked meal lately. I will see in a couple weeks on my Newcastle - King's Cross run!

"First Class" LOL. A complimentary coffee in "the lounge" and a packet of crisps and bisquits. Don't forget the waffle on board LOL. What a FUCKIN' RIP OFF!
