Dave brings "Grant Tinker" (Elmer Gorry) and Staff Engineer for Technical Development Randy Hoffner onstage to celebrate the show's impending move to stereo, while Head Stagehand Jimmy Fitzgerald offers a cautionary note. The switch is made, resulting in an unforeseen circumstance. And Biff Henderson makes his first home-base appearance.

Thank you so much for posting these and please keep them coming. Is this really Biff's first appearance??? Wow.

+MrLamphole Thanks; it's Biff's first home-base appearance. His first on-air shot was on July 28, 1982, when, on videotape, he did his impression of Ed Sullivan in a "New Cable Networks" segment. (And after the commercial break in this show: Andy Kaufman and Jerry Lawler.)

I believe I remember seeing Biff on the "David Letterman Show", but that was a looooooong time ago.

@ Biff appeared briefly on DLS a couple times, but this was his first home base comedy bit.

When I was young I used to think he was Grant Tinker and thought Mr. Tinker wasnt too bright.

Some years later they had a similar celebration when Late Night went into *Dolby Surround* sound. If I remember right, it was a guy reaching up and pressing a small button in the control room followed by balloons and confetti.

And something similar with widescreen HD.

@@jeffreystvarchive6367 No, their first HD broadcast had no fanfare at all. Very disappointing.

Dave could have bought the set at the 7th floor employee store with a nice discount then. Of course, in barely a year later after neutron Jack marched in little niceties like this were just a memory...

This came one week after NBC's inaugural stereocast, the 1985 MLB All-Star Game.

Although - The Tonight Show began broadcasting in stereo the year before, on July 26, 1984. It was considered the first network show to broadcast in stereo.

The black and white picture was intentional. And I don't think this was "Grant"s first appearance.

No the show was never 4k. CBS has been broadcasting in 1080i since they began broadcasting in HD

Is the black and white picture after that switch to stereo intentional, or just a coincidence?

+LivLaRaj I have this as his 7th. His first was on June 12, 1985, when he and Dave Cold-Opened the show announcing the premiere broadcast of "A Late Night World of Love." [of which you'll hear more next week... :)]

Did they stay in B&W after the commerical?
@dongiller
@dongiller 9 месяцев назад
No, they returned to color. Nothing was ever said on the air that they had “suddenly” lost their color as soon as the stereo switch was activated. That’s what made the show great to me. Stuff like that was unspoken, just done with no explanation or pointing out the obvious.

@@dongiller Thanks Don! And good point about how they did't even mention the "technical difficulty" issue they had.
