Welcome back to our channel, NBA fans! Today, we have a deep dive into one of the most controversial topics in the league - Load Management. This video is going to be a comprehensive exploration of the NBA's new star resting policy and how it impacts the players, the teams, and most importantly, the fans.
If you're not quite sure what Load Management means, don't worry; we'll break it down for you. Essentially, it's when teams rest their top players during the regular season, even when they're not injured. It's become a common practice in recent years, with some of the biggest names in the league like LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, and Kawhi Leonard often taking time off during the regular season.
But where did Load Management start? Believe it or not, it goes back to 2012, and it was the San Antonio Spurs who pioneered it. We'll discuss how the Spurs' decision to bench all five of their starters in a high-profile game against the Miami Heat sparked outrage and even led to a hefty fine from Commissioner David Stern.
One of the main groups affected by Load Management is the fans. We'll share a heart-wrenching story of a young Argentinian boy who flew all the way to Miami to watch Jimmy Butler play, only to find out that he wouldn't be on the court. It's a story that perfectly encapsulates the frustration many fans feel when their favorite players sit out unexpectedly.
But is Load Management really as bad as it seems? We'll explore the arguments on both sides, from fans feeling let down to the league's perspective and the potential risks of forcing star players to play. We'll also hear from former players like Richard Jefferson and Chuck Barkley, who have strong opinions on the matter.
Now, let's get into the nitty-gritty of the NBA's new Load Management policy. Star players are now required to be available for nationally televised games and in-season tournament games if they've been All-Stars within the last three seasons. This rule change aims to strike a balance between resting players and ensuring fans get to see their favorite stars in action.
We'll also discuss the special exemptions for players over 35 and the process for teams to request a player's night off. But the big question remains: can the league effectively enforce this policy, or is it more of a publicity stunt in preparation for the upcoming television rights negotiations?
Speaking of which, we'll delve into the business side of Load Management. The current television rights deal is set to expire in 2025, and with tech giants like Apple and Amazon entering the bidding, it's crucial for the league to showcase its product, which, let's face it, is the star players. This policy change aims to ensure that the next deal is a blockbuster, with stars facing off against stars every night.
As we wrap up this extensive analysis, we'll discuss the league's desire to appeal to casual fans and how it may affect the deeper, more invested followers of the game. Ultimately, we'll tackle the question of whether the NBA's new Load Management policy is a step in the right direction or if it undermines the essence of team basketball.
So, if you want to understand the NBA's Load Management policy inside and out, this video is a must-watch. Be sure to hit that like button if you found this deep dive informative, and don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below. And remember, be good to your mamas and maybe treat yourself to a corndog while you enjoy this video!

The league advertises their stars the most because that’s what saved the nba. Magic and Bird, then MJ, then Kobe and Bron. They’re not gonna suddenly change now to start advertising the teams more, especially since it has proven to be a winning formula
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
You're totally right. My thought is, does this collapse on itself? With the player empowerment era and these stars threatening to not report to training camp are fans going to become sour on the league?
@TezBTW765
@TezBTW765 Год назад
@@whatslaps I think if it ever gets to the point of players not reporting to training camp due to wanting to be traded, the league itself will start making examples out of those players with drastic punishments, especially if it’s like a Ben Simmons situation where the star player ain’t even playing regular season games
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
It's starting to happen. apparently the sixers can prohibit Harden from being a free agent next year if he doesn't show. It could get hairy. The Ben Simmons thing was the worst case scenario with the lawyers getting involved. you hate to see it get ugly like that with such a beautiful game.

I’ve always felt that what fans want most is healthy playoff games from their players. I find it a good trade off. Do what you gotta do to be healthy by playoff time, even if it means a couple cities are mad at you for not playing. And I’ve always that the fans’ best response to this is to have stars potentially not playing baked into your decision to go or not. Maybe instead of expecting a 99% chance you’ll see the star player, expect a 60% chance. Ticket prices go down, and the nba might take a hit financially
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
I agree. I wish fans would be more invested in the teams. The star worship is really strange to me. I think it's mostly kids. I was the same way. It would be interesting to know how invested the average fan is.

@@whatslaps I can’t really relate to any of it tbh. I’m a player fan, not a team fan. Been a LeBron fan as far as I can remember and I live in the CHI. So I wasn’t traveling to CLE, MIA, or LA to watch. And for several years now, I’ve just been a league pass 30 team fan. I could easily see myself either younger or as a parent being pissed tho if I loved curry and I lived in DC and then he rested his only DC game with no warning he wouldn’t play

Make the games matter because players and teams are not willing to let them get injured in random regular season game that have minimal stakes. My recommendations: •Scrap the play-in coz unless you are literally tanking their probably in the playoff picture •Top 3 seeds go to division winner, and top seeds get to pick their opponents for the first two rounds •Make your the money you earn from luxury tax pool based on performance
@whatslaps
@whatslaps 10 месяцев назад
I see you. I like the play-in tournament, but my favorite idea is pick your opponent. I say if you get under 20 wins your next first round pick becomes pick 30.

I disagree. I do not make that much money. At most I end up going to 1 game a year. If I go to a game just for 1-2 of the best players on the team to be taking a night off for the sake of taking a night off I will not be happy. While some teams may still be able to put out a competitive product in the court, others teams are just not deep enough for that to be the case, and instead I could have just stayed home.
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
I think we do agree, right? You're content/happy with the new policy and the way the league has been. I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I'm just afraid with the Harden and Dame thing this summer people are getting tired of the drama.
@MegaLakona
@MegaLakona Год назад
@@whatslapsupon giving it some time to marinate I see we do agree. Same shouldn’t have signed a Supermax with a team he knew wasn’t capable of winning if he wants to win. Harden has proven himself to be just a headache. A lot of the issues and controversies are of players wanting to have their cake (getting the biggest contract possible) and eating it too (requesting a trade to a contender as if they were surprised the team they are currently on isn’t ready to compete for a championship.) I think they may be in for a rude awakening in the next CBA if players don’t start playing the majority of their contracts out.
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
that's exactly what I've been saying. the public trade demands have gotten out of hand and now the teams are calling their bluff. The league is starting to make rules around making sure players followthrough on their commitments. I'm pro non-gauranteed contracts over a certain amount.

It's really hard to avoid the fact that money strongly motivates many decisions in business, and, as we all know, at the end of the day the NBA is a business. To the basketball purist yes it would be much better if the team aspect was emphasized over individual players, but alas, dem stars bring in da moolah. Batum, good team player. Nice Reggie bobblehead! Yes this policy is going to be pretty difficult to enforce. Once again, it's all about the money. The league may want Dame using some tide to wash his clothes in the newest avengers movie 🤑. I think maybe for the first time I (slightly) disagree with something you said, certain games can be more significant than others, some games sure do seem like they carry more weight than others. I do understand your point that a game is a game, and either team either wins or loses, but I think there can be more to it than that, particularly thinking of rivalries between teams/players, and/or games towards the end of the season having playoff implications. Anyway, appreciate what you do/give as always. Time for my weekly corndog.
@whatslaps
@whatslaps Год назад
I totally know what you're saying and now that I'm thinking about it the NBA is just always going to be this way. The smart thing to do is have less games. I would hate to see it though. There are games that are "bigger" than others, but from a pragmatic approach it does make sense to take an L against the Nuggets if your next 3 games are booty teams and you want a healthy roster. I think ultimately what the NBA has created is league of stars and fans who want to come out and cream over their favorite players. That's what makes the money. I think were aren't going to have big marquee games any more with the next tv deal. One streaming service will buy the rights and air all games on every night. No tide commericials, no avengers, (probably no Dame).
