On A Bridge While Heavy Coal Train Passes! RJ Corman Railroad Coal Train With CSX Locomotives Pulls Into Thurmond West Virginia Ghost Town! The locomotives are running backward coming off the Pax railroad spur and entering the interchange with the CSX main line. The awesome railroad crossing next to the historic train station has several tracks and is at one end of the big bridge over New River. Amtrak stops at this station while making 3 round trips a week.
First we drive next to the coal train coming down the Pax branch. I got in front of it and drove over the bridge that we will have a closer look at. Then I walked out on the narrow bridge and filmed the train coming across it. The whole bridge shook when the train stopped on it. The train stopped before coming onto the CSX interchange track. I got in front of the train again to watch it pass the railroad crossing next to the old train station. This train station is famous for being in the movie "Matewan". I recommend that movie. We also get to see a classic dwarf signal in use as the train passes it.
We then see the RJ Corman crew get in their red truck and head back to their office. The locomotives that pulled the train off the branch are then seen coming east back into Thurmond after leaving the coal cars on a siding just west of town. Then they pass me again and tie back onto their train and wait for it to head east to the customer. The old coaling tower was built in 1922 by Fairbanks Morse and was used for loading coal onto steam locomotives. It was used for a little over 35 years or so. The best frequency for RJ Corman here is 160.845 and the best frequencies here for CSX are 160.230, 160.320 and 542.9375 for the EOT device. One thing I learned by experience is to never stand to close to a fast moving coal train. Here is a video that I made in Ironton, Ohio showing what happens: • This Is What Happens W...

What an awesome spot JT! That was quite the shot seeing that new MAC rebuild running long hood forward💪🏼! That’s was a pretty decent coal drag for just 2 units, GE and EMD locomotives never cease to amaze me when it comes to pulling power. Great catch JT, have a great evening 👍🏼😁🇺🇸

Nice to see a coal train. In the UK coal is almost finished and what coal trains there are mostly bring imported coal from Immingham Docks. A big coal haul here is about 24 cars at around 100 tons each, mainly because the sections between signals are much shorter here to increase line capacity for passenger services which are far more in number than freight trains. That makes the 110 cars in that train a real joy to see. I would love to get a drive of one like that! Our biggest coal trains in steam days were usually around 60 or 70 wagons at 16 to 21 tons each (2 axles) but then we had no continuous brakes so stopping them was a real art with loose 3 link couplings and sprung drawbar the guard could sometimes have a rough ride in his van (caboose) at the end of the train, especially if the driver (engineer) was a bit careless when setting off or slowing down. The loose couplings would make around a foot of difference in length between cars being pulled and being buffered up so the train length would change by some 70 feet! You had to set off real gently until the train was all on the move. It was a different game to todays brake fitted trains! Thanks for yet another excellent video with real insight into West Virginia coal hauls. At 75 I'm no longer likely to get over to see them in the flesh so it's great to be able to see your videos. I've often looked at Thurmond and thought it a beautiful place and sad to see it as a ghost town but the fall scenes on the video are a joy to behold. No wonder so many folk were there to see it. Good to see the animals too as they make your videos so entertaining!

Rod Smith - Hi, I wonder whether the coal being imported there--through Immingham--is of a kind that's unavailable in England.
@rodsmith3911
@rodsmith3911 Год назад
@@stevenbrucci No, it's becoming hard to get coal here as there are almost no mines left open since the global warming problem sent fossil fuels into decline. It is now almost impossible to buy coal suitable for the heritage steam railways as we have only one pit supplying steam coal from South Wales and that is scheduled for closure in a year's time. The cost will also cripple those lines unless we can find an alternative fuel. They are currently trying out a substitute "coal" made from oilseed rape and other vegetable matter but although it's quite good it's yellow! It doesn't smell like coal when it burns either, but it's a start to keep the steam lines going. The coal imported via Immingham is for steel production. The North York Moors Railway is using Colombian coal so I'm told, as they can no longer get Russian coal! Sad days when the UK has tons of unused coal left underground, but government policy has been focused by the green lobby into stopping coal power stations and building wind farms to the extent that coal has become a dirty word here. Yet we can haul the stuff halfway round the globe to keep the steelworks open. How much extra CO2 does that add to the world's air I can only wonder, but I think it must be more than if we used our own supplies.

Wow, really liked this video. Neat dual purpose bridge. Most of those hoppers looked new or part of CSX reconditioning program. At 100 tons each X 110 cars = 11,000 tons of coal plus car wt of 28T X 110 = 3080 tons, those 2 locos are pulling 14,000 tons!! What an excellent video as usual; thank you.

Okay, I was more impressed with the bridge and scenery then the train. What a letdown! Try watching a high-nose locomotive (don't know what type) from Florida East Coast go through multiple intersections at high speed while blasting it's horn and pushing several freight cars to their selected sidings then speed to another siding between the regular North and Southbound scheduled trains. Unfortunately, the scenery is not even close to yours but the action is so spectacular!

Odd that RJ Corman leases/ owns that line when NS ( N&W ) is on the south end of Pax, and signs are up for KNWA ( Maxwell Hill Rd 408208T) which is a Watco reporting marks company. Signs were there in 2021 and I have seen N&W and NS locos on that branch near Pax at times. RJ Corman lists Oak Hill as their HQ for that branch. And the Red Star Rd B ( 225709G ) crossing lists RJ Corman as owner, C&O Division. 2016 report for crossing Co Rte 23 ( 482508G ) shows it as owned by NS on the paperwork and KNWA on the signs. Pax Rd ( Main Street/Paint Creek Rd ) Pax, crossing ( 482218Y ) also shows KNWA as owner. Actual split of the two lines is in Pax. With the Thurmond line of Ex C&O and the DeepWater Line of Ex NS. RJ Corman should be able to ship out either way. Know the Pax exit off I-77 too well as my truck threw an A/C belt just before there and it also took out my main belt. Which meant no power brakes with a loaded trailer in tow. Brake controller for the trailer helped slow us down going down the exit ramp. A walk up Paint Creek Road from the gas station to a vehicle repair shop, which got the belts delivered from the Beckley NAPA dealer. Repair shop then drove me back to the truck.

Before I visit a new area I look for videos of those areas and I ask the person filming how many trains come through in a day. I also get info from magazines. I have several subscriptions like Trains Magazine and Railfan Magazine. Sometimes I get info on FaceBook. I look at Google Maps all the time trying to find interesting places to film. I get what info I can and then I just go there and wait. Sometimes I will wait for one or two days before I get a train. Twice I have waited for over two days and never got anything. I spent 2 and a half days at Natural Tunnel, Virginia trying to film a train going through the tunnel. Nothing came in the light. Only two trains went by and both were in the dark. I went home with nothing. I spent two days in a town in Pennsylvania trying to film a street running train and nothing went by in the light. It takes a lot of patience and luck. 90 percent of success is just showing up and waiting. Sometimes I get bad information and come up dry. I roll the dice and see what happens. lol

Now that's a money train. If memory serves from my days as an SP brakeman, that flashing yellow over red means 40 mph and be prepared to stop at the next signal. Course that was over a half century ago so who knows what it means now. Folks in the bucolic area around Thurmond are fortunate because developers have not moved in and turned it into a tourist attraction complete with hundreds nee thousands of vehicles bringing in thousands of sightseers.

Narrow roads. Sharp curved. Drop offs into gorge. Sure makes it hard to film at the same time so Safety First even being a pedestrian can be tough. Excellent catch of the coal train it eased off the branch past the dwarf signal and out to the mighty main line. Just imagine this location circa 1940 with smaller shuttles coming off the branch which maybe came off another branch as coal car after coal car we're gathered in the yards From the time you started filming it's amazing how fast the sun disappears in the valleys where some areas may be lit for mere minutes per day and you know the perpetual smell of coal smoke was there as it was your heating and cooking fuel. Indeed the long drags of black diamonds is decreasing but until the last one runs savor the moment. Thanks JT

So cool…I’ve been at that junction of the CSX interchange and Amtrak’s Cardinal many times. I always would imagine what it would be like to see a freight train at that junction as the Cardinal makes its quick stop. This memorable episode makes me want to ride the rails even more than usual. Thanks a heap Jaw Tooth.

What an awesome catch of the CSX Coal Train in Thurmond! 2 CSX locomotives pulling 110 cars w no DPU was amazing! That had to be cool standing on that bridge to feel it shake when it stopped! Thanks again JT for another great video that never disappoints! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware!

Great watching you from over here in Scotland. We no longer extract coal from our land so no mines, Power Stations or coal traffic 😪 The locos sounds very similar to our Class 66 which were built by EMD in the states and their headquarters are in La Grange, IL. Is that the same location you film the street running trains?

So different from the UK freight. Sounds different, rides completely differently and goes along tracks that UK freight drivers would be terrified of. I love the steps in between coaches and the wheezes and squeak and rumbles as they go by. The background scenery is amazing! This vid is one of your best.

I have to admit, how many bridges allow u to film trains while your on the same bridge, that’s cool. Lovely view of the new river and surrounding fall mountains. I grew up with nothing but coal trains, so there my favorite unit trails too. Nice little surprise at the end, Norfie in a bag, so cute. Thanks for sharing JT.👍🏼

I think I counted 110 hoppers. I "think" cause I was not too careful. Pretty good size train though. Bet that felt good on the bridge!! Thurmund is neat! Great video JT. Thanks for another wonderful train piece of history. YOU just may be the archives of railroading. You had a lot of company on this shoot.

@Jaw Tooth It has been a little while since I've seen your videos, but this one was a gem amongst gems. I recently watched an awesome "ghost town" video about the history of Thurmond and it fascinated me so much that I am hoping to put it on my next road trip. Thank you for being my first look into Thurmond. Your videos are always great to watch. Excellent applause track in the beginning as well. Be well and stay blessed.
