@deutsch-amerikanisch8281

JERAMY Zappe In combat its loud anyway and the ping is quiet compared to that. Odds are they will not hear it at all lol. Even this video it shows that the final shot masks the ping. Maybe in a one on one situation, but why do you have a 80 year old M1 when you can any shinny new shotgun, AR, or AK.

When you right, you are right. You load the M1 like the Army training films show how to load it. You know what you are talking about and you are right, most vids on youtube are by folks that THINK they know. There is no M1 thumb risk while loading and you showed it. You paused and left your thumb right there for all to see. Perfect video. You are correct, most people are scared of the rifle. Thumbs up x 100.

Thanks for this information. I got bit by the Garand the first day I got it. That SOB HURT! All I saw were videos of people loading it, but not really explaining it, or saying to hold the bolt carrier and use your thumb... None of it worked. Your technique has restored my faith in loading the Garand, it was much more simple and I didn't get bit this time. Thanks!

Christian Meyer Who cares what you think in a 1v1. How many 1v1's with rifles do you think were documented where the sound of a clip dictated the winner. Find me one. How many real 1v1's do you even think there was. where 2 soldiers from opposing sides both happened to get so separated from the battle that it was quiet enough to hear a ping after being deafened by combat noise and also just happened to bump into each other AND happened to come down to empty guns. What a load of shit. Not a fact at all. Show me a single FACT in your statement. all you have is your own baseless assertions. Silly comment.

Beautiful rifle, and being semi auto when most nations had bolt action, it was a winner. Only problem was the empty mag "ping". In close combat the enemy knew when you were out of ammo. However, GI Joe, being a clever fella used the "ping" to his advantage. His fellow GI would deliberately make a "ping". The enemy would pop his head up, thinking he was safe and BANG, one seriously dead enemy.

The ping is actually a bit of a misconception. Most of the time it wasn't loud enough to be heard over all the gunshots, explosions, and shouting going on. Battlefields are noisy places, so the ping didn't make a whole lot of difference.

No. the ping came into its own in quiet sniper situations. Two guys go out to where an enemy sniper has been operating. Contact made and the "ping trick" came in handy.

well I mean when you consider that virtually every other military in the war used bolt action rifles as their main service weapon the Garand gave American soldiers a major advantage since it was a semi-automatic rifle and was the main service weapon. So you could actually say that it won the war since it gave soldiers a big advantage against opposing forces.

The Garand is one of my favorite guns, truly a rifleman's rifle. Re: M1 Thumb, if you are worried about it the best way to avoid it is to place the back of your hand, just above the pinkie finger (think karate chop), on the charge handle. This way if the op-rod starts to move it rotates your thumb out of the way. I have never owned a Garand that would chamber the first round like yours does. I have always had to tap the charge handle, like you mentioned.

Repro Garands are still generally made with refurbed parts and are typically very expensive. Fulton Armory offers Garands ranging in price from $1200 to $2500. an original reliable shooter can be had for around $600-$700 from the CMP. The CMP also offers what they call a special grade which is a refurbished receiver and parts with a new production stock and barrel. It is essentially a new gun, they go for $950. Soft point ammo feeds well in mine.

I've shot cast bullets in my Garand for an entire summer (without taking the rifle down) and in the fall there was virtually no lead in the gas port or on the piston. Used RCBS 30-180-SP bullet with gas check sized .311", water dropped wheel weights. Shot just as accurate as ball ammo. I was using Accurate arms 2495 powder but IMR4895 should work as well.

I hold the handgrip and lock my index finger over the op rod handle when I load to prevent M-1 thumb. You do it right though, and the way you show it, the charging handle doesn;lt close until pressure is released from pushing down the clip. The problem is when you don't fully cock the charging handle and it is held open only by the friction from the follower assembly - then as soon as you push the en bloc clip in it shuts on your thumb.

This is HOW to get an M1 thumb. HOLD THE OPERATING ROD! As an NDCC cadet I was issued an M1 Garand in 1969 and taught by a WWII infantry officer. Draw the bolt to the rear locking it; place the butt of the weapon on your thigh & with the edge of your hand holding the operating rod handle in place, push the en bloc clip down on the follower until it reaches the bottom. Only then remove the edge of your hand from the operating rod handle and bump the operating rod hand forward. Old school!

I have always been fascinated with the garand rifle. My dad was trained on it when he served in denmark (For some reason we keep some in stock???) He told me he had two rifles over the course of his training. One performed nicely like yours, the other he only had to look at the clip for it to smack his thumb :) Sadly not allowed to buy one here but would be fun.

I have no experience with Garands, only bolt actions, but I saw a guy who put his hand, right below his little finger, on the bolt, to stop it from accidently going forward when the clip was inserted, in order to avoid the M1-thumb. What he did was he placed the clip in the gun, put his hand on the handle to the bolt, and pushed the clip into the weapon with his thumb, while keeping the bolt back with the rest of his hand.

You are right most guys say you have to hold back the handle. I did see one time before though I think it was gun guy showed push till it clicks and it won't go until you release it. Just don't waste any time when you pull your thumb out. 😁 I have been trying to decide between the M1A and the M1 garand. I go back and forth. Honestly eight shots is more than enough and I prefer not to have a big magazine hanging down. With equivalent bedding & Barrel do you feel like one is better than the other for accuracy. I plan to use mine for a combination of target shooting and hunting. I enjoy your videos and I've subscribed. Thank you
@Eggugat

the sound is actually of it being ejected from the rifle, it only makes the ping sound if it hits something hard like a rock or a helmet. The soldier in WWII used to have a N-Clip tied to a string to swing and hit their helmet with so the Germans thought the gun was out of ammo.

The powder in commercial ammo doesn't burn fast enough, if I'm not mistaken, in the Garand. This can cause operating rod damage. There is powder out there, and I believe Hornady makes Garand-safe ammunition to shoot out of the box. But, an adjustable gas plug from Brownells or Midway will be the safest way to shoot any commercially loaded ammo out of a Garand if somebody so chose. Op rods are expensive, and I haven't gotten an adj. gas plug. Greek HXP for me. My 1903 loves that stuff too.

Depends on how patient you are. You can still get one of the "Special Grade" garands from CMP. They're under $1000 and include new stock and barrel. They look to be in mint condition, so that might be what you saw at the gun show. It takes about two months to get them from CMP (unless you can drive to one of their stores), but it's well worth it.

There's a more efficeint way to load the M1. While holding a loaded clip with your thumb and fore finger, use the blade of your right hand to press the charging handle to the rear and hold. Use your thumb to press the clip into the mag well and then lift your thumb away untill it's clear of the receiver. Then release the charging handle. Train reloading that way and you'll increase your reload speed.
