If your bag is shiitake with white mycelium and producing popcorn blisters, are you supposed to cut vents at the top to allow the mycelium developing into a that dark brown leathery look before fruiting?

Im also hooked.. but do you need to sterilize the bag ? special for grown at home just like say 5 bags ?
@unbornG4
@unbornG4 3 года назад
If you're just using Oak Hardwood sawdust w/o Wheat brand, then no, you dont have to sterilize it because the pellets are already pre-steralize. If you add a supplement such as wheat brand then you will have to pressure cook it or pasteurize it to kill the microbial organisms that will try to compete with the mycelium.
@seancostello26
@seancostello26 3 года назад
@@unbornG4 great answer lol you beat me to it. Its always fine to sterilize, and can't hurt, but it's not always necessary.. if you're really worried about your hardwood sawdust, you can pasteurize, if you don't have a PC, to increase your chances of success, but the hardwood pellets are formed under alot of heat and pressure, and thus are sterile

How long do the mushrooms grow inside the bag before you transfer them to the grow room?
@unbornG4
@unbornG4 3 года назад
He allows the block to inoculate for 3 months before opening them for fruiting. Some growers don't wait until its brown and start fruiting while its still white, but the results are better if you let it ripen.

Hi Southwest Mushrooms, I’m just starting with Shiitake’s.....and I’m just wondering about cold shocking and soaking....you didn’t seem to do these steps.....are they not necessary? Thanks for the videos they are great!
@frankiezek3459
@frankiezek3459 3 года назад
I have the same question
@unbornG4
@unbornG4 3 года назад
Cold shocking isn't necessary. He keeps his facility in the 70s and it doesn't effect the spawn. As for soaking the blocks on a commercial scale for Shiitake it really isn't worth it if you dont have adequate space. You have to let the block completely dry out and that takes up to 3 weeks then you have to rehydrate it and the yield will always diminish after each flush. Not to mention taking up valuable grow space for other mushrooms.
@seancostello26
@seancostello26 3 года назад
all the moisture that's needed to grow the first flush is added to the substrate before sterilization. as far as cold shocking goes, that's only necessary for some types of mushrooms, and it's not so much for shitake. It's a cold weather mushroom anyway, and prefers about 55f
@daved2403
@daved2403 3 года назад
What is the best way to fruit the blocks if you don't have a grow room? Doesn't look like he responds to any questions, but was hoping someone else might chime in. Thanks!
@unbornG4
@unbornG4 3 года назад
You could always use a mono tub. Place the block in a mono tub. Mist the tub once or twice daily to create the humidity and fan inside the tub 2-3 times a day to displace the CO2 levels. Or you can buy a mini green house which doesn't take up much space and recreate what he has but at much smaller scale.

Hello...thank you for your uploads! I am wondering...since every shiitake- or even other mushroom growing video is about blocks in plastic bags...and in some cases there have thousands of them, when it is done on an industrial scale...how do you tackle- or do you even have a way of tackling your apparent problem with plastic waste? Are new plastic bags used for every growing block, if they are reused, how many times do they last before disposing? How do you dispose of your plastic waste which you seem to have plenty of? Thank you for your time!
@randomd00d17
@randomd00d17 2 года назад
Hi Adam, I’m not the owner of the channel, but I feel like I can answer your questions. If you have any other concerns, please reach out. There are a couple of solutions, of which hardly any industrial operation utilizes them. The short answer is: there’s an absolute boat load of plastic waste that is trashed. Most of the time plastic bags are NOT reusable, since you need to inoculate a nutrient rich sterile sawdust medium with spawn, and unfortunately there’s not a whole lot of options for you to do that; especially since shiitake grows so slowly.. The bag needs to be autoclaved, inoculated, sealed, and opened. It’s not realistic to clean them out and reuse them after that. One solution unicornbags came out with is a patented biodegradable plastic bag that’s ACTUALLY biodegradable. I did some testing with them, and exposed to constant sunlight compared to traditionally composted, and it began to break them down completely within a couple months. Very interesting solution that needs more testing and testimonials before being used industrially. Another solution is grow the shiitake on logs, or don’t grow them at all. They’re particularly difficult in the sense that you can’t grow them like oysters, or lions mane, etc,, on less nutritious bulk that can be nocc’d in buckets, trays, etc., or even portobello on manure substrate. This is because of the extremely long incubation time shiitake has which makes it only realistic to do in a sterile setting when industrially producing. Otherwise contamination becomes a huge issue. In my grow op, I only use bags for shiitake grows, and bulk substrate steam pasteurization of wood chips, straw, and manure. That way I can utilize biodegradable bags whenever I want to do a small batch of shiitake, and I can reuse my XLST bags for bulk over and over again, since I’m not sealing them. Then I use a massive amount of glass mason jars to inoculate and prepare grain spawn, and a TON of reusable bins, which admittedly is much less efficient than bags, but in my opinion more sterile, sustainable, and eco-conscious. Plus, I never have to seal bags which is an absolute nightmare unless you want to invest in an industrial grade impulse sealer ($500+!!)
