Loanwords(外来語) Pitch Accent & Pronunciation 

Two minutes in and we're getting taught Japanese expressions in addition to loan words. There's just always so much good extra content in these videos!

She teaches exactly like my Japanese teacher! this is one of the best japanese teaching channels out there Also Osaka and Tokyo's pitch accent is opposite to each other! haha

This reminded me of that kind of legendary video of a VTuber struggling to learn brazillian portuguese because of the difference between "avô" and "avó". Those kinds of things are a struggle to non natives of any language. (In case anyone is wondering, "avô" would be grandpa and "avó" grandma, the change is just how you pronounce the last "o") As a bonus, she also trips over the word "difícil", stressing the last syllabe while the acute accent on the "fí" means that the "fí" should be stressed. (That word means "difficult") So thank you Misa for taking the time to explain those things, it helps a lot.

Yesterday I learned at my online classes about the normal way of how Japanese people speaks among friends colleagues or family and it will take some time to assimilate the way some certain particles can be omitted during normal conversations.

Really fantastic tutorial. Thank you for taking the time to really explain pronuciation. Sometimes we all get lazy in our own languages and teach bad habits to new speakers, so it is good you are vigilant.

Hey Misa, you swapped Mi and Do. Mi = E and Do = C. In Brazil we use the Do Re Mi system as well, haha. Thanks for the content 🙏

A tip for viewers/listeners; be mindful that you do indeed need to learn pitch accent, this will make you extremely understandable even when you make mistakes and note that you should learn 1 pitch accent. It's quite confusing for any native speaker to hear an 'unnatural mix' of accents and timings. So learn the standard Tokyo pitch and then you can always later adopt that other one. "oRANDA" being stereotypical both predominantly high while being 'flat style' seems appropriate xD As for Dutch words in Japanese, I believe; エネルギー enerugi- Energie (Energy) - This may be from German.... ヤンキー yanki- Jan Kees / Yankee (Yankee) - Rather than directly, 'Jan Kees' and other Dutch names may have been Anglicized first and then introduced to Japan... history is murcky. And more certain; メス mesu Scalpel (Scalpel) - Actually the Dutch word "Mes" means Knife, but it's used for 'surgical knife' if you will (i.e. a scalpel). Though I also understand it's falling out of favour. ランドセル randoseru Ransel / Schooltas (School bag) ガラス garasu Glas (Glass) カス gasu Gas (Gas) コーヒー ko-hi- Koffie (Coffee) ビール bi-ru Bier (Beer) アルコール aruko-ru Alcohol (Alcohol) For the One Piece fans; ゴム gomu Gom (Gum / Rubber) ピストル pisutoru Pistool (Pistol) マスト masuto Mast (Mast) ブリキ buriki Blik (Tinplate) コンパス konpasu Kompas (Compass) ドック dokku Dok (Dock) Very few people take the effort to learn Dutch (for obvious reasons) so as a native I'm always amazed at people who undertake this daunting task. Despite being such a small country, there are over 200 (I thought 250+, but this video says 200+ and I trust their research more than mine :P) dialects, which can pose quite the problem for learners. See this video by Casey Kilmore - "Why you can't understand spoken Dutch" (or search "Re70-MEUORE") However, like how in Japanese the "Tokyo" way has been designated as 'standard', Dutch also has Standard Dutch (formerly Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands or ABN - [General] Civilized Dutch).

As a native portuguese speaker I became really surprised that in japonese you have the word 　パン which we write pão in portuguese and sound really similar.

A loan word that comes from my language: アルバイト (which comes from "Arbeit" - though "Arbeit" in my language means 仕事. The word for アルバイト is actually Teilzeitjob or Teilzeitarbeit.)

I thought I knew how to pronounce "gyoza" correctly, but a nice Japanese lady in a Japanese restaurant spent some time correcting me. According to her I was placing too much emphasis on the "g" sound. She said it was more of a grace note than a hard consonant. But I hear Misa sensei pronouncing it more or less how I did. I wonder what's up with that?

1:30 I'm pretty sure most of non-English native speakers have difficulties in pronouncing the 'th' sound, people from my country included.

Thank you for making this video カタカナ is probably the thing I struggle with the most. I have no problem with reading something like 一目瞭然 (even the fist time I saw it i guess the 読み方 correctly) but something like ディティール (which I came across the first time today) is so hard to read for me for some reason, like I have to sound it out kana by kana and even then I didn't know what it meant until I looked it up XD

みさ先生, you will like this word in portuguese, is one of the biggest in portuguese: "Hipopotomonstrosesquipedaliofobia" and it means, phobia of pronouncing big or complicated words. hehehehe...😁 it's so scary that google translator doesn't put it in カタカナ. 👻

In brazilian portuguese, sushi and gyoza are pronounced exactly like in japanese... Karate not so much...

Dear Misa you are misnaming emphasis or accent that translates in physics to higher volume of amplitude as pitch. Girls have higher pitched or shrill should due to higher frequency as they have shorter vocal cords so they dont have Adams Apple (there is no Eves apples, just Evens melons). The shift of pitch actually turns S shound to Sh sound.

Ok. So, question. Is it correct that using the dash (-) is just an indicator for a long vowel sound? Referring to the word "shiiru," 6 minutes in. Sorry, but I don't have a Japanese keyboard installed to type it out (I'm still a beginner, at around 140 days of studying). Cuz I've seen that used in a lot of written words. And it's the conclusion I've now come to, based on what I've studied. Since I know the katakana for both "shi" and "ru." I'm getting there. Lol Aaaaaand, 18 minutes in? It looks like I was on the right path, from the beginning. Good thing I was always an A student in English (even if other courses weren't my favorites). Misa sensei, you are pronouncing メール with the heiban pitch accent but showing it as atamadaka. My dictionary shows it as being atamadaka but I've always heared it being pronounced heiban like you say it.
