I've worked at a lobster restaurant for over 35 years and about 30 years ago or so read about a person who put cameras on lobster traps to see if trapping had an effect on the population. Their research showed that a lot if lobsters sat out there looking at the trap , but apparently only the unwary ones went in. They did use a different kind of trap back then than Jacob does, though.

My grandparents lived in Massachusetts, and there would always be a huge pot for lobsters and quahogs for my mom & grandpa when we visited from San Diego. Live Lobsters are going for $25 bucks a pound right now. I think it's going to be canned tuna at Christmas this year.😂 Wishing you and your crew a very Merry Christmas.☃️🎄🎉

Where are you paying $25 lb ? In Massachusetts you can buy live lobsters for under $10 a lb and they will cook them for you.
@HugsXO
@HugsXO 9 месяцев назад
@@williambikash6645 Retail live Maine lobsters are going for $22.86 to $25 a pound and the store will steam them for you. If you are going out to dinner Lobster is running $60 to $70 dollars, plus an additional 4 to 6 percent fee that charged on top of your bill. This is in San Diego where the Democrats voted to raise the basic wage at $15 to $20 an hour. Somebody's got to subsidize the cost of doing business here.
@williambikash6645
@williambikash6645 9 месяцев назад
@@HugsXO I wonder what a commercial lobster pound in Massachusetts charges for shipping live lobsters to San Diego. If you order the right amount the pound will know what is most efficient in terms of shipping cost. It has to be better than $25 lb. Some years ago I was at a nice restaurant in Cleveland Ohio and the waiter was trying to convince us to order Lobster.I said I'm from Boston, serve us something from the lake (Eire) about 2 miles away. The walleye was very good!
@HugsXO
@HugsXO 9 месяцев назад
@williambikash6645 Okay, I was curious, so I looked up live 🦞 shipped. One company wanted $145 for one, and a second company showed $42.50 for one. However, there was a minimum order of 2 for approximately $90. Any which way you look at it, it's going to cost a leg and a claw. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas.

Would probably be expensive and time consuming to film, but would make good viewing. Great videos by the way. Best wishes from West Wales, UK :-)

I’ve seen people get seasick in a swimming pool. I can only imagine how bad this would be for them! I went fishing on a party boat off the coast of North Carolina once (there is a reason why it was only once) and the weather was cool but not cold and just a mild wind. Weather was supposed to clear by 10 am but the storm at sea decided to go against the weather and charged toward shore and within a half hour we were about 35 miles out or so and waves went from 2 feet or so to at least 5 feet and we ALL got sick but we started catching all kinds of grouper and king mackeral so we stayed to fill up the coolers then raced into the safety of the harbor. Great day overall!!!!

From my own experience on the west coast trollers everyone is different. Some guys never get sick, some guys never get over it. Those guys go home when you hit the dock. I personally would get sick about 3 or 4 hours after leaving and it would last 2 days. Then for the rest of the season it didn't matter how rough it got I never got sick again till the next season. Mind you we were on the boat full time for 6 months where as these guys go home everyday. That might cause them to feel the effects more because they are on and off each day. As for being wet, our rain gear works pretty good. You get kind of in a cocoon and you don't get too wet. Except when the occasional monster wave swipes the deck. The you hope you are hanging on but you get soaked to the ass.

Sometime show us what you use for bait in the lobster trap and how the bait is secured inside the trap. (Maybe you already showed this and we just missed it.)

I love the sound of the hydroslave. As an offshore lobsterman after a 12hr steam then haul 100 pot trawls for a total of 5000 traps.

Am curious. It's pitch black out at sea how do you guys locate your traps? Do you use so kind of homing beacons? If after a major storm are the traps still where you left them?

Love the longer videos, everything is impressive but I think you need to show your viewers that tuna fish and peanut butter sandwiches really help with sea sickness 😅
