Finally someone who is like me! I want locs and currently researching parting patterns & size for my appointment this week. But it's not like I've always wanted dreads for years, but I always liked them on other people. And many of the protective styles I do with fake hair, resemble dreads.
There are so many reasons why I love your channel. Add this video to the list because one thing that is lacking in the loc community is transparency. Starting my loc journey, even after thorough research, was full of surprises. I truly envisioned the process to be as simple as my decision to big chop in 2011. A frank and honest perspective, such as what you have so perfectly articulated, would have been so helpful to me, but I saw only the popular loc'd RU-vidrs displaying glorious crowns, without proper attention given to the level of patience and commitment required to get there. Sorry for the novel, but I really just wanted to thank you. I am 14 months loc'd now, and I am still learning so much daily. This video was awesome and necessary ✌🏾️
This is like the sweetest comment ever! Thank you so much. This means a lot. Yes girl I wish I knew what I now know so that I could have made a more informed decision when I started 7 years ago. Thanks for watching and commenting.
All i heard were locs, because you had me mesmerised since the video started, ABSOLUTELY Beautiful wow your locs gives you a very royal, exotic, egyptian queen type of beauty demeanor......when I settle down my girl has to be rocking locks just saying....anyway keep sweet and inspiring ppl to rock the look ;)
+matt john LOL!! Thank you!! It's a lot of loc'd goddesses out there, you'll have plenty to choose from or just make your gilrl fall so head over heels in love with you that you make her want to loc her hair. LOL! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for sharing your journey, I’m locin’ my daughter at the age of 32. She’s a brand new mom and doesn’t have time for herself, her baby is EVERYTHING!!! A true Blessing!!
Bless yall! I'm the same. Soon as I turned 30 this month, I got locs. Had a baby April 1 which makes 2 girls and I only want to focus on them. Locs seem so much easier for me.
Yes! Either you embrace them or you just start over. No need to be stressing over hair too much other bigger issues to stress over. Lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you so much for your time in making the video! I have learned so much. I just started my loc journey 3 days ago :) I'm super excited and happy. I think i got it right but gonna embrace the wrongs that will pop up along the way. Its always great to hear someone else's journey :) I love your hair by the way.
Great tips! I agree with them all. That patience thing is no joke. Next month will be 1 year for me. All I want is enough length for a ponytail! If I can just get to a ponytail...After that, I'm sure it will be, "If I can just get to high bun... LOL. TFS
Awesome video. I've been a loose natural for 3 years have done my hair myself. I just started my loc journey in August. I had been getting my retwists done by my stylist who started my locs. I washed my hair and retwisted my hair by myself. I was nervous but felt confident since watching RU-vid videos.
I agree with everyone else: all good points to consider. And I love your hair honesty in telling why you started them. Being real...and being young. Congrats on your journey of 7 years: your locs are lovely and they suit you so well! (And yes, that lipstick is poppin!)
Thanks for all your information on your beautiful locks and your journey, I've been real patient with my locks and I'm happy with my hair. Also I just want to let you know that you are so Gorgeous and Beautiful, Love your Locks and Stay Blessed Beautiful!!!
I don't like styling either! Oh the struggle. I got locs to be self sufficient and do my own hair, haven't meet a loctian yet who can do my hair how I like it, because I have a tender scalp. So its been just me for the most part for the last 4 years... Patience is definitely Key! Great video!
That's great! My sister is what we call tender headed as well and she always does her own hair. More power to you. I do my own hair most of the time. But some times I just want someone else to do it. Lol.
Maybe I'll get concerned but I don't think I will. I want them a certain way of course but no matter what, I'm here for the nature embrace, the love of self and my unique DNA, the culture, the journey. I will let my hair lead, and nurture in that way. This video was great and so informative. Thank you! Love and blessings 😘 "neat locs" 🤣 cracks me up. Isn't that an oxymoron? I get it though.
I just started my locs! my mom did them, it was her first time but she retwists her friends locs so she'll be doing mine, i've gotten a lot of compliments on them and they're only starter locs
New subbie, I watched you several years ago, I remembered that you said you are an attorney, and I think you had a different name as well. Glad to see that your locs are flourishing beautifully.
Beautiful! Thanks for the honesty and all the great information. I don't have locs yet, but I'll definitely remember this! Thanks so much! Stay beautiful & keep inspiring!
That is why I enjoy RU-vid to get the information I need to start my twist, I am going to the beautician to maintain my twist because I do not know anything about twist dreads or locks. I will be having my hair wash, colored, and maintain. Only time I will be washing my hair is when I am going on vacation for swimming and snorkeling. My beautician will not charge me for a style but to maintain my hair to always be healthy. Great Video
+The Good Life That's awesome. But I'm going to need you to learn how to maintain you hair, at the very least. It's pretty simple. Once you do it by yourself one time you will a pro by the second time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you for your honesty. Your hair is beautiful. I wish my hair was think like your hair. I have sister locs and I love them. I just would love to have more density to my look but I realize that everyone locs are different. I did my research but there was still so much to learn from people like yourself. I like you go in and out of love with my hair but overall I am happy I am on this journey. I will be locked for life unless I loss my hair as I age and if it thins out.
Thank you for sharing your lock journey, definitely needed to know the do’s and don’t’s as I embark upon this lock journey for the 3rd time “ is a charm” lol
Very sage advice! What an interesting story of how you started your locs, lol. Thanks for sharing that tidbit! :) Oh and your makeup an hair is GORGEOUS!! What color is that lipstick I NEEEEEEEEEED it!
Your hair is beautiful! I am considering combining my daughter's locs but I have been holding back.....I am now so inspired to proceed. Thank you for this very informative video.
Wow, thanks. This sounds like a problem I would have ended up with as my hair is thick - I would have gone for the same size wise initially but now I can avoid that
Very informative video and you started your journey on my birthday yayyy :-) I also started my locs because my ex convinced me I should get them he also had locs lol I gotta keep it real.
I love the honesty of this vid. I have started my loc journey (again) and this time I'm so much more relaxed. I look forward to the different stages and embrace them. Not sweating "perfection" as I had before. Thanks for this. Blessings.
Thank you for your video , I've seen a lot of videos yor the only person that casually said its very expensive to get locs done in a salon . Ive started my locs, my friend started it for me ( cost me $ 60, and re- twist $45) I m able to re-twist myself so Im very happy with that . I want to thank you for your detail video
Second set of locks in play. First set, I cut them off for all the wrong reasons. I’m not someone who always wanted them and it took me almost 17 years to want them again.
I could relate to you so much. I think I'm jumping in head first bcuz I never wanted locs. I've been natural for 5 years and a few days ago I just decided to get locs. I just subscribed I'm doing the goddess locs first then I'm gonna start my journey
Teo Lou cool. Definitely try out the goddess locs and then make your decision. But if all fails you can always comb them out if you don't end up liking them. Thanks for watching!
I am that person who cannot do my hair but my sister is a YT blogger for Natural Hair so she is good with up dos and stuff so I just show up at her house to hook me up. I enjoyed the info because I am a month and a half in and this is good info to know
Max Moore lol. Glad you got someone who can hook you up for free. My sister Patricia knows how to do hair but doesn't like doing it. Lol. Thanks for watching!!!
Hi loc queen ! Very lovely locs am 2yrs 3 mths into my lics & am loving it oman ! Patients is highly important in this journey how old r ur locs & do u interlock? Stay locy
If you're used to getting hair extensions I think the price 65 and up isn't so bad now if it gets crazy like a hundred and up then we going to have a problem lol
I don't understand "retwisting"? Does that mean people are undoing their twists? Wouldnt that slow down the loc process? Sorry if it seems like a dumb question
no, it's not undoing the twist. we say retwist but think of it as twisting. the "re" literally just means that you are twisting your hair after some time of not twisting it. when we twist our hair it tightens the locs which aids in the locking process. i hope that helps. you can search "retwist" on YT and you'll see what that process looks like.
I know you said you mostly twist with water but do you still use creamy products like conditioners in your locs? I'm so afraid to use them regularly for fear of buildup but I never asked someone whose had locs for many years if it negatively affects the hair.
That's a good question! I'd like to know, too. I used a conditioner for the first time yesterday on my 8-month old babies, because they were feeling brittle, but I was really hesitant because of the "build up" concerns. Any words of wisdom?
+Windsingerful definitely water the conditioner down if you didn't. water it down to the point where it looks like cloudy water. kinda sounds counter-intuitive but it gives your hair the moisture it needs! i'd say do a ratio of 1 part conditioner to 2 parts water.
Hey great question. I don't mostly twist with only water but I have in the past. I use products to Retwist. I do use conditioner. My Locs are mature so it doesn't affect my hair in terms of unraveling. In terms of buildup I don't let it sit in my hair and I also try to wash it out well. Don't live your Loc journey in fear. ;) If your hair is dry, moisturize it. You can dilute it like someone suggested below. I don't dilute it but it's a good idea if your very conscious about potential buildup. But I also don't condition with every wash. Maybe you can try a moisturizing shampoo that doesn't strip your hair after washing it. That's another alternative.
+Khambria If you use Conditioner, put it in an applicator bottle with a nozzle and fill it with water and shake it to mix. The consistency should be watery and not thick and just squeeze it on your locs. I have used a plastic cap for 15 minutes no heat. Then rinse, for me this method prevents build-up and my locs are moisturized. Everyone hair is different find out what your hair likes and stick to it. I rarely use conditioners because my hair is fine and I don't want my hair too soft. I do take hair vitamins, drink mostly and a lot of tea or water and wash my locs every week because my locs love water, and I condition my locs with coconut oil. 3 years in for me. Sorry for the long explanation, hopes this helps you or anyone reading this.
question does the thickness of your locs effect how they feel when doing sports. i want to have locs and go back to grappling i just have this idea that locs like your side although awesome looking will keep coming out if i ponytail them for sports also i will be doing sports 4 to 5 days per week so will this cause issues?
+tattoodrdoke thanks for the question. First let me says that my locs are in plaits so they aren't that big. But even at that size my hair is long enough to be put in a ponytail without any coming out. Whether your locs can fit in a secure ponytail really depends on length. you can always find elastic to wrap around your loc no matter the size. I'm not familiar with grappling but if you aren't into water sports you will be fine. I will say the longer your hair gets the more it weighs so that may pose more a problem then whether you can put it in a secure ponytail. There are always headbands that you can wear to prevent your hair from falling on your face. You also need to figure out your hair type. I have thick hair so my hair will be heavier than someone with thin hair. So it really all depends on your hair type. Im far from an athlete but I haven't run into any issues with the size and length of my hair. I hope I provided some clarity.
+SheLovesLight thank you the quick reply. Grappling is like freestyle olympic wrestling and judo. My hair grows thick and course. I was thinking of having cornrow for about a year to help the growth process then will lock it at 2 years growth. i have about 4 months at the minute and given my own rate of growth i cant cornrow it until 8mths growth.
