In this video, I’m visiting the amazing Kampung Baru, a traditional area in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! Since it’s my first time in Kuala Lumpur, I wanted to see the real Malaysian side of the city, so I spent a day exploring Kampung Baru. This place is super cool because it shows you what Kuala Lumpur was like before it became a big, modern city with all those tall skyscrapers.
Kampung Baru is one of the oldest parts of Kuala Lumpur, and it’s full of awesome traditional wooden houses, colorful markets, and delicious food! I even tried the authentic Malaysian food, Lontong for the first time. Lontong is a tasty dish made with compressed rice cakes, vegetables, and coconut milk soup. It was so good!
I also walked around the neighborhood, saw some epic mosques, and met some really nice people who live there. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming!

Malaysians are spoilt for choice when it comes to delicious foods because of its diverse cultures and ethnicity. There's always something for everyone here in Malaysia. Kampung Baru played a significant role in the history of Malaysia. It's also one of the few bastion of authentic Malay life and culture right smack in the wilderness of the city. Our government before this have tried to buy over the land there for development but inhabitants stuck to their guns. Many people living there are actually millionaires ten times over 😊

Actually Wayne. Just like most other places in KL, Kampung Baru becomes much more alive during the nights. Extremely busy I would say, it even gets a lot of traffic jams especially during weekends. There are also lots of pretty colorful lights during the night.

hi wayne. That's quite a distance you walk..😅. The market is actually Chow Kit market. Lots of small stalls selling snacks, canai, cendol..... For nasi lemak, different shops or stall has their own take on it. Like the ramly burgers, some places its great but some are not. Keep exploring. Take care.

Good one Wayne, I much enjoyed Kampung Baru walkabout and it does provide a sense of what I remember of what much of the areas around K.L. when I first went there almost 40 years ago. Good to see people are just a hospitable as decades ago. Also a bit like what you will find in much of Malaysia outside of K.L. still today. And if you found KB, attractive, I'd say check out the the suburbs outside of Georgetown in Penang. Back in time when I was working for BP and traveling around the world, my take for the most livable places in Asia and were: Fukuoka Japan, Penang, Chaing Mai and K.L., and I'd say today all are much more attractive today.

@@WalkAboutWayne And rational, kind and hospitable, some of my truest and best loved friends were in Malaysia. The mum with her kid at the Mosque saying hello and waving brought back memories, and I don't there's much of a reason to be shy about dropping in a mosque and asking if you can film and chat. I was thinking about back in the late 80's the billionaire owner of construction and drilling company I was working for needed a representative in Malaysia and said if I could set up a Malaysian company and secure some contracts I could do very well profit wise but the Bumiputra laws would pretty much restrict me from that business unless I was Muslim. My Christian Chinese GF was a banker and her best friend a lawyer, and they seriously suggested that if I joined a mosque and changed my name to Bin Muhammad and made some Muslim business friends it could be possible to set up that business. I gave it a bit of consideration and dropped by a Mosque and they set up an appointment with one of their members who was an attorney and I was surprised how open, inviting they were about discussing the business aspects. My impression was that if you were a Non-Malay and Non-Muslim in a jam and needed some help, if you dropped by a Malay Mosque they would be happy to help. Don't know if that might hold an Indian or Pakistani Mosque but I'd pretty much expect it with the Malays.

Another good video; thank you for sharing the adventure. I enjoy older quiet, fairly clean and well-maintained neighborhoods too. Continue your travel series videos; informative to the benefit of people who have not traveled there or know of those destination points. Traffic doesn't appear to be too bad either. Like the street market as well. Don't need a refrigerator when you can go to a street market and shop for each meal. Fresh as fresh can be! Good looking quality of vegetables and meat products. Where are all the "soi" dogs and cats? Hahahahahahaha

Having lived in both places I preferred eating in Thailand as being more geared for tourists I could get more variety. I love Malaysia and would leave the U.S. ASAP for it if not sort of trapped here, but the heat and food were the biggest long-term challenges for me in Malaysia. Some Malay dishes I could eat all the time but a lot of the regular Malay, Chinese and Indian fare is pretty heavy, fatty and VERY Salty, and it used to be hard to find Chinese food that was not saturated with MSG and palm or cheap cooking oil. In Thailand, Japan or Mexico I never really craved western food (I don't crave it in the U.S. or the U.K. either) but in Malaysia I often dreamed of an American burger, Salad bar, Italian food, tacos, Fish and Chips, Roast Beef or turkey and mashed potatoes. I also found it rare in Malaysia to find a Thai, Japanese or European/American, Chinese food that was that westerners would enjoy, except for High Tea and DimSum. Seems choices in places like K.L and Penang are much better today than even 12 years ago so maybe not an issue now.
@WalkAboutWayne

I would say more variety in Malaysia, with so many food influences. It just seems like different food everywhere. I do prefer Thailand though, I guess it's just what I'm use too. Yes, great fight this morning, loved it.
