Thanks for that drone brood tip. We are doing that. I try the dig through it a little to see if they have mites.

Glad ur doin good Doc , Question out of curiosity, why u want to winter ur bees in a brood box and a half while u can simply winter in a minimum count ? Which theoretically less count less cost ( feeding, treating, managing ) , here almost all beekeepers winter hives with 6 or 7 frames of brood only !

Thanks! And great question! It offers more food for my bees to winter with and it gives them room to start growing more quickly when it’s still a bit too cold for be to do bee work in late winter, early spring. Definitely one of the best questions that have made me think through the answer😅🐝

I don’t use excluders I watched the bees fight to go threw one day I watched them and they were getting stuck I felt so bad so now I let them free foam I use doubles and my queens don’t go up past the double but I run doubles not singles

I know what you’re saying, I see drones that get stuck in them 😬

@@thehivedoctor13 yes but even other bees were haveing trouble I have nothing against anyone useing them I just don’t after what I saw I use doubles I fine she will get a round or 2 in the second deep and then they back fill it with nectar when she goes back to layout the bottom and then she won’t go up past it when they do this so it keeps her in the bottom in most cases 😅

Oh man! Even your worker bees?! That sucks. I would do the same thing for sure in that case.

@@thehivedoctor13 yes even worker I’m not sure if the size of the plastic ones I have are a issue .Or if it’s the bees they are so full and heavy with nectar they have issues too

@aaronparis4714 Good thought on having full bellies! I remember once that we got a bad batch of 200 plastic queen excluders from Dadant. They admitted to having some incorrectly sized excluders and said if we brought them back they would exchange them. But we didn’t have them anymore.
