Moss and I hike the Loch Ness 360. For a challenge I decided to hike it without eating. No food for the full 80+ mile trail!
For safety, while not eating for so many days and over so many miles, I test myself each night for ketone bodies in my urine and also check my blood glucose levels to make sure it did not drop to a too low level. I carried emergency food just in case it did. I am not advocating that anyone does anything similar during a hike and would actively discourage anyone thinking about it.
Please note that Moss didn't do it without eating anything as that would be cruel. Usual full hiking ration for her, treats and fresh meats etc whenever we came across a shop. In addition Moss' rucksack may look large but it is all her warm clothing etc made from down and such. It's bulky but doesn't weigh anything; I carried all her food and treats plus often her bag at the end of the day too.
We first set off down the Great Glen Way from Inverness to the bottom of Loch Ness and then return north back up the South Loch Ness trail, wild camping each night.
We set of on Hogmanay and have our first full day on the first day of the year; an epic way to start the year!
All the best,
Cheers!
John & Moss 🐾👍

Hi Joe, thanks man! 🙂👍 Actually, funny you say that (you are the only one who has mentioned it) but when I was editing the vids I was like, 'jeez-oh, it kinda sounds like I'm a wee bit drunk or have had a stroke or something!' So, yeah, I heard it too later on! At the time I didn't notice anything but I could definitely hear myself slurring and speaking a bit more slowly or oddly for sure playing it back. Super weird! I'm not diabetic or anything: some folk thought I was cos I had the tester but I only got that to make sure I didn't get to a point of anything too freaky. I had backup food and if anything went too weird I had a good 2-3 days high calorie rations stowed away. An interesting experiment but not one I would recommend. I mean you are so much colder at night: it's like the body without fuel will just release what is necessary and no more. That's how I developed the technique of eating a large proportion of my calories at night before bed during proper cold winter camping. Keep you so much warmer at night. I just fancied a wee change to see how the body reacted: it was pretty interesting. Plus it changes your set point of what you think you can cope with if push comes to shove; I'm not sure everyone got that. It was pretty safe: I'm not diabetic, I have body fat, the route more or less follows a road max half an hour away, you pass through places every day, I had food and I was testing myself to see what was going on inside. Plus I had my SPOT emergency beacon and phone (reception the while time more or less). So it wasn't really that extreme at all. There was a wee bit of an initial reaction to this in the comments you see. Many people are so conditioned to think we need to eat every day 'or else' that it may seem crazy but I know that's not the case for someone who is healthy, with nothing underlying and is not pure skinny. I mean it also a terrible idea for weight loss etc: I ate like a demon when I got home. I'm totally not saying this sort of stuff is a good idea. But that wasn't the point. It was more about safely seeing where my threshold lay is a specific area. Basically I now know I could easily live without calories for 8 days+ and also move across the land. In fact now I know if I was to find myself in a situation where I had no food and had to traverse land I would limit myself to 10 miles a day. That seemed to me to be where the sweet spot lay (in the cold carrying a pack) where I would be able to keep my blood glucose levels steady while exerting myself by liberating body fat without eating. Any more exertion than 10 miles a day seemed to deplete me quicker than I could liberate energy from stored fat in that environment. I wouldn't have known that before. In addition, I've also went 10 days without eating in normal life for an experiment and such. So it wasn't like I was out there for the first time. I just wanted to see how the body reacted while having to move across landscape and travel. I kinda like the idea of knowing what I'm capable of and where my limits are. Then I can make smarter choices if it ever comes down to any nitty-gritty type shenanigans. Cos you never know the script so it's good to know you. What can you cope with physically and mentally. How comfortable are you with X,Y and Z. Know what I mean. Well there was the lockdown a few months after this and the supermarkets were emptying for example! I wasn't bothered much cos I know I don't have to panic about food som much from such experiences, whereas folk were freaking out like mad and stockpiling and all that jazz. Canne get milk or bread for a day or two? Freak out! Haha 😂 So aye, I like doing stuff like this. All my other hikes on YT are normal ones though. 🙂 Cheers! John & Moss 🐾👍

Hey mate, great watch thus far in the series and just wanted to ask about the fasting. Are you doing the keto diet or is it just a test?

Thanks! 🐾👍 Nah, not doing keto or anything like that; just a wee test. 🙂
