Moss and I hike the Loch Ness 360. For a challenge I decided to hike it without eating. No food for the full 80+ mile trail!
For safety, while not eating for so many days and over so many miles, I test myself each night for ketone bodies in my urine and also check my blood glucose levels to make sure it did not drop to a too low level. I carried emergency food just in case it did. I am not advocating that anyone does anything similar during a hike and would actively discourage anyone thinking about it.
Please note that Moss didn't do it without eating anything as that would be cruel. Usual full hiking ration for her, treats and fresh meats etc whenever we came across a shop. In addition Moss' rucksack may look large but it is all her warm clothing etc made from down and such. It's bulky but doesn't weigh anything; I carried all her food and treats plus often her bag at the end of the day too.
We first set off down the Great Glen Way from Inverness to the bottom of Loch Ness and then return north back up the South Loch Ness trail, wild camping each night.
We set of on Hogmanay and have our first full day on the first day of the year; an epic way to start the year!
All the best,
Cheers!
John & Moss 🐾👍

I might have missed it in your video but what’s the purpose of doing the hike without eating?

Hello! The nature of Scotland is wonderful! Thank you for the very good video. Is it summer if you hike after all?
@HoundsofHowgate
@HoundsofHowgate 4 года назад
Hello! 🙂 Yes, Scotland is lovely, but so is Japan! Out of all the places in the world that I would like to visit the most is Japan. One day I'll travel on holiday to Japan and try to see as much of the country as I can when I'm there. In fact my sister went on holiday in Japan about 10 years ago; she travelled and visited some cities but also travelled around rural Japan in the countryside even more. She loved it and said it was beautiful! You can hike in both summer and winter here in Scotland but of course you need a lot more equipment in winter. In this video series it was winter but before the snow season. The snow usually starts at the end of January or February. The main hiking season is March/April until about October. In March and October it's still cold but it's manageable with no special equipment. This video series was in early January. Hope that answers your question. If not or if you have any more questions then please ask away. 🙂 Cheers, John & Moss 🐾👍

Thank you for your reply. The country side of Japan is changing year by year. I can't judge if the change is good or bad. However, I think that the traditions and nature from ancient times must be preserved both now and in the future.

How did you find the dog backpack (did it also have the waterproof cover?) and can I ask about the waterproof coat on your pooch? We did WHW with our two in August, and the days with rain were grim for the backpack!
@HoundsofHowgate
@HoundsofHowgate 4 года назад
It's good and Moss used it on our hike of the entire length of Scotland last year. RuffWear make really good products. The rain cover doesn't come with it and it's a separate purchase. It's by RuffWear too: Backpack- amzn.to/2NObMx2 Rain Cover- amzn.to/36lciJo *Sizing is critical I had a cheap backpack for her that I got and it rubber her armpits raw so I binned it. The RuffWear one has been ideal. This is her raincoat: Raincoat- amzn.to/38zscBI *I ordered 3 and could never get the body length and leg length right so ended up just getting the length right and cutting the legs shorter. It actually worked out to be better I think. The material doesn't fray as it's coated nylon. This is the second one we have had. Her last one lasted a full year! I have been looking at getting her a custom backpack though. There is a company in the US that has had rally good reviews. You can check out their work on Inst. too: www.groundbirdgear.com Hope that helps a bit! Any questions then ask away. 🙂🐾👍

There's no shame in eating pizza! I'd be eating 3 times a day,maybe 4. What I couldn't fail to recognise was the sound of the wind at the loch side.it was so remote and i felt so insignificant.

I love pizza! ♥️🍕 Yeah, some of the bits were super quiet. In fact I think I only seen 3 hikers the entire time. None of which were doing the 360. 🐾👍

Nah, not diabetic or pre-diabetic or anything like that. Just didn't eat for the challenge of it but wanted to keep an eye on what was going on internally so I didn't get myself into any bother! 🐾👍
