Hello & welcome along on this walk! If you're new here - my name is Sarah and each week I head out on a walk with my faithful companion Jack Spaniels, to explore somewhere in this beautiful country of Scotland and hopefully find something to paint back in my studio at home.
We have ventured back up north this week, to somewhere that I think you will have heard of - not least because of a very famous (or infamous) mythical resident!
We walk through the woods at Urquhart Bay, from the village of Drumnadrochit to the banks of Loch Ness - the largest body of water in the British Isles and supposed home to the Loch Ness Monster (or Nessie, as it is commonly known).
Even if we don't spot Nessie, there will be plenty to enjoy and explore - including a view down to the dramatic Urquhart Castle, dating back to the 13th century. Jack is feeling particularly excited about the swimming opportunities - watch out for his sprint finish down to the loch side.
As a change this week, I have decided to show you a painting I have done as a commission for a viewer - based on a photograph they took at Urquhart Castle. Thanks to Sue from the RU-vid channel Adams Family Pursuits, for trusting me with this commission and allowing me to show it to you in this video!

Just beautiful! What stunning scenery. I loved Jack's flying leaps and watching him splish splash in the water. The robin is fantastic! You definitely nailed it, I love it. I’m amazed at Jack’s love of water…he’s definitely a son of a selkie! Beautiful and quiet walk through the forest to the vast loch….I can just imagine Nessie surfacing out there, for a breath of air.

You know l love to go on your walks with you guys. Jack is just teasing you about which direction to go. Hes on it and hes got a compass stick too. Here comes the rain again. When l read that it came out as annie lennox and the eurithmics singing. 🤗 loved the walk. The painting is wonderful as usual. 🥰

The video was awesome as usual. bought back memories of our honeymoon and visit Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness, Scotland holds a special place in our hearts forever. As for the Robin painting what an amazing process to see (Dave *cough*) the robin come alive on paper. He will be forever known now as Dave. @@shewalksshepaints After I'd heard the ballad of the massacre, I'd hoped I'd get to go there. The day we went, it had been misting heavily, which didn't bother us, but as we got to the glen, it stopped. And even tho' the road was not far off, we heard no traffic! Magical place. As soon as we left the marker stones, & headed back to the gift shop, the mist returned! I took a photo that I enlarged, & I have it custom-framed, inside an even bigger frame, on my entry hall wall!

I have always wondered where the name "Rowan" came from? It is some people's last name. It is also the first name of many men, women and children. It is the name of many Counties, in many States, here in the U.S.A. The name "Rowan" is the name of the County I live in (which is located in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, U.S.A.). There are many other Counties in other States named "Rowan" also. However, there is a difference in how it is pronounced by the natives born and raised here. In Kentucky the County of Rowan is pronounced "Round"; because, there was a bloody feud between two families here over 100 years ago. The Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, at the time, called the County of Rowan "Bloody Round" (and it was used for most people through the years). After some time the word "Bloody" was dropped. We can always spot an outsider to our Commonwealth by the way they pronounce "Rowan".

Wow - such an interesting story about your county! Rowan is a pretty common here for girls, although I think it was originally a boys name. The rowan tree is very common in Scotland, but I’m not sure where the name came from. Maybe something to do with the red berries?

I saw the Loch Ness Monster, looks a little like a spaniel. 😜 I just wanted to add that European Robins are so much cuter than American Robins.

Just curious, did Will have any difficulty flying a stroller near Urquhart Castle? When I was in Scotland October, I fly my drone a lot of places, but surely not near Urquhart or Eilean Donan castles..

There are some places where drone flying isn’t permitted - including directly over scheduled monuments and public areas. We never fly within a certain distance of these buildings or directly overhead, so always a safe distance away 😊

I don’t think I could pick just one Guadalupe! I love the ones that take me by surprise a little bit - the ones I’m not sure are going to work, like the frog or the seaweed. I always love doing birds too 😊

Oh no the dreaded sticky Willie's. Did you know brushing with a balloon egg whisk removes them easily. Wish l knew this when we had spaniels. For some reason they dont stick to Lollie. A smashing video, thanks for sharing your walk......Alioban

Hi, beautiful woodland walk, loved all the Queen Ann's Lace and greenery. Jack had a ball on this walk (as usual) and his underwater swimming shots made me smile - so graceful - a bit like the Olympic Synchronised Swimmers, ha ha. Hard to tell from the footage, but the swifts are probably more likely martins or swallows. Apparently Scotland has a real issue with Lupins taking over the rivers etc and swamping native species which is a shame... Humans eh, we introduced himalayan balsam and knotweed too 🤦‍♂️ Jack is definitely an organic rocket ship 😂 That robin painting is fantastic! The bit of gorse at the bottom composes it so perfectly!

Thanks Richard! I didn’t think they could be swallows as their tails weren’t long enough, but definitely could be martins. They were so fast it was hard to tell for sure! Yup - we did see lots of nasty plants in the woodland, but there is a conservation effort in place to remove them in favour of native ones 👍

Loch Ness looked breathtaking, and it was a gorgeous wee trail you found off the beaten track, and of course, Jack found the water 😂 It's such a scenic place. This was a lot of fun. Something I love is watching Jack do Jack things. Something about dogs many people do not know is that a Dog's first Loyalty is to other dogs. It can be trained out of them but every time you ask a dog to go against its nature, there is risk involved. A dogs second loyalty is to food. Again it is in a dogs nature. I've been training dogs for years, with low impact training because I suspect like you, I like my dog to be happy and not stressed out. Jack is looking very good! ❤️

Thank you! We certainly try our best to give Jack a happy, carefree lifestyle. We love watching him run around on our walks, picking up scents and splashing in the water - just being a dog 😊 We’d love to get another dog someday, as long as we could make sure Jack would be ok with it!

Jack is a rocket dog! And his tail never stopped wagging when he was in or near the water. Again, I will say it, what a beautiful country. And a soft weather day. And every time he's at the tip, I watch for Dave.
