I was born and raised in the south of England (think: Home Counties), but my mother was from Inverness so I spent my early youth travelling up to the north of Scotland once or twice a year to visit my grandparents. As a result, I have wonderful memories of Inverness and still consider it one of my favourite destinations in all the world - and I'm a former airline pilot! I went up to the University of Edinburgh at age 18 and my parents moved to Inverness to live there permanently, only two years thereafter. You'll love Edinburgh - also a beautiful city - and I thoroughly enjoyed my four years there. If you have time, see if you can get across to Glasgow - if anything, the architecture in Glasgow is even better than that in Edinburgh.
