I was on the roof of a bowling alley at midnight, 10 degrees and 30 mph wind. This was about 1997. The bowling alley was closed I was alone and the ladder blew over while I was on the roof. For some odd reason I had a “ brick” phone and it was in my coat. ( I didn’t usually carry it) I had to call 911 to have the fire department put the ladder up so I could get down. It was 24’ up. I felt like a fool. Glad your ok stay well.
You aren't lying. We just had a guy who had a ladder incident. He ended up falling from 25' up. He broke his femur and had several other injuries. I admit I've taken it for granted from time to time. Your message about your near miss, renewed my commitment to treating every time as my first time.
I highly recommend the little giant sumo stance ladders. They have outriggers that you can self level the ladder or just put them out for extra stability. Little giant claims it prevents sliding by 600%. My old company only used those ladders and I am trying to get them in my new company. Even thought about buying one myself because I definitely prefer them over the standard extension ladder. Just feels a lot more stable especially when extended far out.
I also had a ladder blow down when working on one of my first jobs. Luckily it was on a busy road and a town road department crew saw it as they were passing by. After that I started using a piece of 12/2 electric wire to tie in the ladder. Just loop it through a ferrell or gutter bracket. On flat roofs, I used a ladder stabilizer standoff bracket.
Glad you're ok man, stay safe. I had to jump off a ladder like that once, so I know exactly how you felt. I was propped up on a shady car port tho, only way to get up this commercial roof we had. Awesome video btw, I need to look into these for all of us here.
Respectfully, I would consider using that as a backup safety measure on a super windy day, but that will do no good to protect someone from a sliding ladder while they climb to install it. The Roofers ladder stabilizer is the tool to use for professionals and home owners. Not only does it prevent a ladder from scratching the paint, or bending a gutter, it fits over an existing nail or brace to keep the ladder from sliding while climbing it. A quick search will find that and a telescopic pole, to set it in place before climbing the ladder, for under $200. It will last a lifetime for a home owner and likely many years for a pro. Sounds like a sales pitch, but I didn't learn of this device until cleaning gutters during Covid lock downs here in Canada. I have 35 years of climbing onto things from roofs, telephone poles (using both spurs and ladders) and, communication towers, trees, rocks, etc. so I have an appreciation for any device that is quick to install, and practical, for getting a job done without compromising safety.
Glad to hear you’re ok. That could have been bad like you said. I always take my sweet time going up/down. The wife seen this vid so she might be buying me those lol
Know what your talking about I fell off a ladder once about 15 onto pavement lucky didn’t break anything it torn my ear and have stitches and bruised up a little was lucky, glad your ok brother be careful man 👍
I have a Werner Stabilizer for my ladder at home. The first "Problem" with it is It attaches to the rungs of the ladder, so the only vertical/height adjustment is rung by rung. Second, the overhang on my house is about 6 to 10 inches beyond the reach of the legs of the Stabilizer, and there is no adjustment... so yes, that makes it totally useless. I use it by attaching the stabilizer to the ladder so the legs of the stabilizer extend just ABOVE (nearly touching) the gutters, so the legs basically/almost/to some extent, rest on the edge of the roof. What prevents the ladder from tipping (left/right) is that if the ladder is pushed to either side, the ladder movement is stopped by the stabilizer contacting the roof, and/or gutter. It's not ideal... but, I only use it when I'm cleaning the gutters. I remain on the ladder with gutter about even with my chest. If I was (ever) climbing higher, and getting off the ladder onto the roof, I wouldn't count on the stabilizer like that. I think the Gutter Grip looks like the way to go all around.
I clamped it both ways and the way I did it in the video was more solid for me. Seems like when it’s has more mass in between the clamp the lock is more solid
Hey man like have one those back in the 90 because like you my ladder fold in after ,I fell off 28ft ladder thank God still here pretty scare as today to claim ladder
I haven’t had any issues with it denting. I try to be careful when I put the ladder down on the gutter. It really the only way to get on the roof if there is not roof access. Thanks for watching!
