Lockheed Martin LM-100J Does a Loop in its Flying Display at Farnborough Airshow - AIN

Lockheed Martin’s C-130J Hercules-derived LM-100J commercial freighter is making its Farnborough debut. Lockheed has previously offered a civil version of the older, shorter-fuselage Hercules called the L-100, but production ended in 1992. Many of those aircraft are still in operation today. The multi-role LM-100J is expected to complete a variety of delivery missions involving bulky and oversize cargo. It can also operate to and from short or unprepared airfields, without ground support equipment.

It takes a lot to impress me when I look at flying displays. The flight routine by this Herc driver is very impressive. Nicely done.

Absolutely fantastic! I've flown many times on Hercs in the military and they're as incredible as you see in this vid - a fantastic airplane, and many thanks to the designers, builders and pilots and crews, they always brought us home!

Why do you say that? With light fuel, no cargo, operating within parameters ... should be no problem. If Boeing can roll a 707 ... aviationweek.com/blog/707-flight-testing-and-not-talking-about-rolls-1956 and Bob Hoover can do airshow maneuvers on one engine, I'm sure a Herc can perform some aerobatics.

Allmmmmmooostt a real loop. He bailed on it towards the end. 90 degrees off original heading at the end. More like a HUGE a huge barrel role. Everyone inside definitely getting negative g time though. Fun. Glad he didn’t break the wing like that firefighter C130 did a few years back.
@honey5bucket

Perhaps you refer to the C-130A which crashed in 2002 when cracks in the wing spar caused the wing to fail. An Airworthiness directive was issued on all C-130A aircraft detailing the problem and inspections required. None of which apply to brand new production LM-100Js.

Excellent. In spite of the politicized commenters on RU-vid, who wrongly portray the super maneouverability displays of the Sukhois and Migs as useless circus stunts, this type of apparently useless display has a significant value. Just like Raptors doing Cobras; Ospreys and Harriers hovering, flying sideways, backwards and bowing to the spectators; and helicopters doing loops, this Hercules displays special abilities that open the door to new possibilities. Not that it will be looping around; but as a gunship it will have excellent agility for a cargo truck. That’s the whole point of all these “crazy” displays: to show possibilities for new capabilities. The loop was a classic loop abandoned at its last 1/4. It entered wings level, topped and dived wings “level” and recovered banking away. Very nice. If you use QuickTime, you can follow it by clicking second by second. This pilot is a true professional who, obviously learned the lessons from the accidents of a B-52 at Fairchild AFB and a Nimrod in a Toronto Air Show. Both, piloted by crowd pleasers, performed low altitude wing-overs, stalled and had no room to recover. I saw the Nimrod perform the stunt twice before the crash. On both occasions, when he reached the top of the maneouvre, his speed was so low that I (as a pilot) experienced the proverbial strong and sickening sensation of my testes sharply and literally raising to my throat. I was scared. This Hercules pilot wisely kept one eye on his speed/angle of attack as can be seen in his smart way of quickly reaching a safe display altitude, by steep climbing and lowering the nose to regain safe speed (zoom climbing). At no point during his display, my “gut indicator” was triggered. It was pure joy! Kudos.

Simply Awesome!!! Who would have ever thought an aircraft like the Hercules could actually loop and remain in one piece! Sure it was not carrying anything and it had the minimum amount of fuel necessary to safely preform the flight but WOW! I don’t think that Airbus would ever try that with their A400M, if they did the wings would probably fold. C-130s and LM-100s are the BEST!

It's been known that a C-130 and L-100 equivalent power, mechanically, and structurally can do a loop. But the reason why they were not done is the oil system. It's a scavenge system, which limits negative G's. Once the oil pumps start sucking air, that engine has to be shut down. Does anyone know if Lock-Mart modified the oil system. If they did, was it solely for this demo or all of the L-100J's modified?
