Watch Escanaba & Lake Superior locomotive 502 leave the train behind as they head thru Iron Mountain, MI to bust thru snow banks. After clearing the tracks, they went back for the train. I filmed them just north of town near M-95 where it nearly came to stop. Go watch the Live Stream near the fire dept as the train passed by northbound.

The reason that he disconnected from the train and just took the engine is it had to go slow and if there was any considerable amount of ice buildup in an intersection that derailed the engine.it's just the engine.he's not tying up a half a mile of intersections that's the reason that they do that.
@dr.tyrell7083

Per rules if gates dont come down you have to stop and flag a crossing ad the conductor is doing. The probably left they're train behind because all that weight is hard to stop and start with just one unit, especially with all the snow
@dogvetusa
@dogvetusa 4 года назад
I figured that the train was required to do the flag thing there in the city limits but never thought about the weight aspect of it, plus with how long this train is they would be blocking multiple intersections if they didn't uncouple the train to do the clearing.

This happens with deregulation. The smaller railways cut costs by laying off track maintenance crews then farming out to contractors, usually the cheapest contractors, and they do very poor work. If that line had been maintained by larger railways crews, that train could have just blown its way through.

This type of weather can cause the track at crossings wheel flange slot to fill with ice which can derail the consist. Send the loco through on its own to clear the flangeways and not close all the crossings in the length of the train if there is a problem crossing.

They left the cars behind because a fully loaded train while having to stop for each crossing and plow could need to traction issues.

Jason, if an ELS employee ever invites you to go hunting DON'T GO!
@ep61611
@ep61611 4 года назад
My guess as to why it left the cars behind to clear the tracks is perhaps explained when the worker got off the train to flag cars - the train was moving cautiously and the roads were slick, creating a sliding/collision hazard. Breaking the cars loose cleared the tracks behind the train.

I like this. I've often wondered why, especially through places like Donner Pass, and Tehachapi and Flagstaff where you have main line trains, why they never developed a pilot mounted "flame thrower" of sorts, or a track heater that blows heat onto the rails to eradicate the snow. Maybe with the new technology they can develop something

It's probably safer that way if the locomotive derails then it's just the locomotive and not the whole train
@BranchlineGeepProductions
@BranchlineGeepProductions 4 года назад
Looks like they're clearing the snow ahead so they don't stall out. The resistance pushing on the front of the locomotive from the snow causes the locomotive to work harder, and if they have a heavy load behind them also, then they could easily stall. Safer to take it one step at a time.
@kleetus92
@kleetus92 4 года назад
On level track that amount of snow is trival at best. What they're probably more worried about is clearing ice from the flange ways in the crossings or, making sure there's nothing solid that could disconnect the brake hoses between cars and halt them dead in the middle of the town.

Hi Barb! Was curious if MI got the same weird warm ups around December ( 2 days broke 50 degrees) & then not long ago this month; I want to say about almost 2 weeks backwards from 1/26/2020 where it broke 60 degrees? I'm over in the Western 1/2 of Massachusetts, so, sometimes we see some of MI's "lake effect" snow . We had 2 huge storms around the 1st weekend in December where, depending on where you were over here, you got close to a total of 5 feet, then, we had a slush snow storm that put about 2 inches, another one but less for snow / slush fall although that 1 had "Thundersnow" in it where there was a thunderstorm mixed in. Let's see, just had about 3 to 5 inches a few days ago & that's about it so far.
@barbatloosenutproductions2027
@barbatloosenutproductions2027 4 года назад
@@eventsotherthingswithchris9019 Hi dear. To answer your questions, in the 60 years of my existence, I don't ever remember getting 5 feet of snow! Of course, where I live, I'm west of Lake St. Clair & the biggest snow maker, Lake Erie! Once a snow passes over us, and heads east, over Lake Erie, that's where it picks up a lot of moisture, and dumps it on it's eastern coastal shores. (Think of Buffalo, New York). I do believe, those who live on the east coast of Lake Michigan, (the west side of the state) probably see more snow than us. In fact, the most I've experienced is about 3 feet of snow. Then again, I'll take the 3 feet of snow over the 1/3 an inch of ice storm that seems to plague us at least once a year! Though the cities & counties are good for getting the road salt out on time, fallen trees, branches & power lines are really a big problem! Lastly, yes, we usually have 2 days of "spring like" weather in the middle of winter. Of course sadly it doesn't last & we're back to the cold. Well? That's pretty much it for winter in southeast Macomb county, Michigan! Take care luv. Oh, and P.S. yes we've experienced thunder snow. It still catches me off guard! Not something you expect in the middle of winter! Lol!
