i'm real impressed with you're work! very well done! it kinda breaks my heart that the world has one less '86 gt-s, but at least it's on the road. i bet it takes of like lightning

You bet! In fact, every time I drive the car I am thankful for her support in this project - letting her know that makes her feel appreciated too! We were expecting our second as the car was completed.

In retrospect, I should have fixed up the AE86 and sold it, to better fund the project. As it was, I made the decisions that made sense at the time. I'm pretty happy with the car. I'm currently building a new one, to fix all my mistakes.

@SchmittyFilms The pictures here were taken at the Grand 10 in Kelowna. We haven't raced there since they built the EnergyPlex and we lost our grid area.

@NorkiddExo It handled really well right out of the box. In the three years since this video, I added a 5/8" front sway bar, 1/2" rear sway bar, more compliant rear bushings, and a limited slip differential. In 2009 I converted to independent throttle bodies, distributorless ignition, and stand-alone fuel injection computer.

@lumker Thanks! I have not looked into the RSX motor, so I cannot answer that. I used mostly 1" 16ga square tube. Whether this project is good for a beginner or not depends on who the beginner is. Some folks take to welding really well, others - not so much. If you aren't a good welder now, you will be by the time you are done.

I made the frame - I forgot to take pics, because it only took about 10 hours to get frame done as you ~first~ see it. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Almost everything came from a 1986 Toyota Corolla GTS. Front spindles and rack are Chevette, with Datsun 210 hubs and rotors.

The shop would not inspect the car with shortened struts and de-powered shortened rack. This required changing to Chevette spindles and front-steer rack. Hard to do ~after~ the completion....

The manifold was made from 1/2" steel plate, and exhaust tubing. I did away with the TVIS completely. Factory ECU seems to have handled it fine.

@lumker 13 лет назад
That's a pretty neat car! I was thinking about doing a Locost project in the near future, is it possible to use a Acura RSX motor and set it up as a RWD? Also, what kind of metal tubing did you use for this? And would you recommend this for a beginning welder?

I must say it does sadden me to see ads for cars ect for sale that says "baby on the way, car must go." In the early 70s my dad had a little Fiat that was his "toy" car. My first memories are of that car and helping dad work on it. In HS he helped me build an off road buggy. LOL I was the only girl in auto shop class. Fact is, if everyone is involved at some level a project car can bring a family closer.

I actually have contacted you in the past and I have two kids, so I was amazed at how quick it went together then I realized you had no children at the time. I should finally be putting my frame together this summer, since I will be mostly retired. 2.0 liter Zetec, Nodiz electronic ignition, honda carbs DanST manifold GM 7.5 rear S10 with a torsen 3.09 gearing and disk off a 92 maro. RX 8 six speed I have an adapter order from the UK for that. 15: forged rims from a BMW and I will order the centering rings. Mg midget rack steering from datsun pickup, I have been collecting parts for years. That is what you do when you have kids :) upto 2750 with the gaz shocks, the parts are about a 5 year effort since I did not want to spend to much. Question would a super charger be worth it?
@GregWellwood
@GregWellwood 5 лет назад
I got a LOT more things done before I had kids. My last project was putting a Chevy V8 into a Pontiac Firefly (Chevy Sprint) and converting it to RWD - it took 8 years because it got dragged out so much. I also started another Super 7 frame, that is dimensionally correct to an original, but it got waylayed when I had to bring the V8 Firefly home from work, and I'll finish it once I finish building a '61 Chevy Apache 10 pickup. As of this post, my eldest (born during this build) is 13, and looking forward to his first car. In answer to your question: yes, I believe boost is worth it, and intend it for Super 7 #2 (2L Duratec).
@selrahc2061
@selrahc2061 5 лет назад
@@GregWellwood More power :), Zetec I went with because the British have done, and are still doing so much work on them. retroford in the UK and DanST great providers and the ecu MEelectronics. lowered the curve. I have started reducing the hours prior to retirement currently 57, and I am changing jobs from the one I have been at 10 years and has recently become not where I need to be. It looks l will becoming a part-time teacher ;) my kids 48 and 15 Months.

Considering it's a replica of a 1957-1969 Lotus, I think the headlights look fine. Anything else looks out of place. The cool thing about building your own car, is you can build it the way YOU want. Cool eh? It's been a long time since I've been called a bastad. (grin)
