The reason why it is much preferable to split it is because you want to make your bow in the same direction as the vertical grain. Splitting it allows you to make sure your stave has acceptably straight grain (many trees surprise you with twisting grain that is not ideal for a bow), and that you are perfectly aligned with the grain (no splintering latter).
