Big Lew! Great to see this review after using the Lodge for this long. I have been intrigued by this grill and after you talking about it now, I will definitely get one sometime! Cheers!
It’s good grill. I was disappointed at first that they changed the old one. Yet now I know it was a good change. Change isn’t always good. Yet many time is very good, this grill is very good idea.
I stumbled on this video accidentally, and loved it. I just bought a copycat model from Everdure for half of the price of the Lodge. I've got a collection of Lodge cookware I use regularly that will rival most anyone, but I rolled the dice on this clone. I hope I didn't screw up. Either way, I plan to enjoy more Big Lew videos.
I 100% agree with you on doneness. Ribeyes and ny strip, med rare all day. But in my experience, if i eat a sirloin thats med rare, its just so tough and chewy. Loving the vids!
I have the old one and still love it. A tip some might not have tried is to cover meat with a cast iron skillet if you want some indirect heat on the top
My internet was out, and I wasn't about to watch RU-vid on my phone! Now it is back and here I am. I still have my old school Sportsman's Grill and I think it is a champion. It is kept in the house, and I have not used it for a while, I treat it kind of like a museum piece! Kind of a bragging right I guess. I have been offered 200 dollars for it too. The debate continues. Nice to see you with no hat and a head full of hair,...Young Man! God Bless,..fun video for sure!
I don't mind this new one. Fewer parts. Many of the old ones ended up with broken or missing coal doors and air dampers. There are replicas out there for those who are nostalgic, or want a cheap knockoff of questionable quality. I won't buy the Kickoff grill though. I would prefer the bottom section to be a bowl, so you can just quickly dump in a bunch of coals at once.
Yeah the Kick-Off is a little backwards like that. Yet cooks well and doesn’t flair up much at all. As far as this Sportsman Pro, exactly. Not having a coal access door maybe a little inconvenient during the infrequent long cooks. Yet the daily convenience of not having it fall off often, makes up for it. I was nostalgic and skeptical when the pro was introduced a few years back. I no longer feel that way. I will likely sell my old one, soon.
Just bought my sportsman pro, worked great at the beach in high winds..my question is for anybody who knows a good way to clean the drippings from the inside of the charcoal drum!??
Here is a link for Scrub Daddy sponges, these things are awesome for cast iron. Look the inside of that charcoal bowl will never look brand new again. Clean it with the sponges and elbow grease. If there is any stuck on residue that won’t come loose don’t worry about it. It will burn off the the next time you use it. Then what ever you cook will deposit more. It’s okay.
