A Loewe Opta Meteor 1781W that has been dropped. I was asked by a friend if I could repair it. The case is broken after being dropped but he said it worked. When I try it I am disappointed to find not everything is working as it should. This is going to be a bigger job than I thought!

Intimidazioni?

Woohoo, another Dave Tipton video. I've been binge-watching your old videos lately to get my Dave fix. Luckily my memory is pretty shot these days so what was old is new again. Old age is great, you're always meeting new people and you get to hide your own Easter eggs. I told my son the other day to quit making fun of my memory otherwise he'll be sorry when there are no eggs under the tree this Christmas. Anyway, a superb job as always and I hope your eyesight remains good as well as your health in general.

Dave, I really enjoyed this one - it's great to see that new winder in operation... and I immediately went shopping on AliExpress afterwards to see what I could get one for... they're actually not too bad, although I would still be shot if I bought one at the moment 😂. And I'll echo others who say your videos are never too long... the only problem with them is they make me feel guilty for not getting one of my own out in far too long... although I have a three week deadline to get a couple of things done, so I will have to get back into the garage asap. Great work on this one though - and thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers, Steve

A little tip that I dont know if you've heard of. but if you want an environmentally friendly way to remove rust, mix molasses with water in a 9-1 ratio. let the parts soak in it for about a week if you have the time, then just give them a good scrub and they'll come up nice and clean, especially if they only have minor rust.

Same set up with push buttons and shows places like Luxemberg on the face and also has the magic eye tube it was made in 1957 and I bought it at a garage sale 2 yrs ago for $20. @DavidTipton101 Год назад

@BobAndersson
@BobAndersson Год назад
Thank goodness the mains transformer on mine worked as that would have been a total show-stopper for me. I chose to restuff the rectifier (and dual electrolytic) so I needed a dropping resistor as well and also a mains dropping resistor to get the filament voltage right as it's 240V plus here. I had to totally strip and refinish my cabinet which was terribly faded but at least the veneer was in good condition. I also dyed the grill cloth in place (it was too well glued down to remove) using a Procion MX gold dye. Very scary to do but it came out well - if you're tempted then test first as it's very easy to overdo the colour. If you haven't spotted it already then there's a bandpass function built into the volume pot (push/pull) which you'll need account for during AM alignment. But it's great to see you've finally been able to tackle this radio and to hear that your health issues are behind you. I'm looking forward to Part 2. Thanks for sharing.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Год назад
Hi Bob, a failed transformer is a show stopper for most repairers. It's good I now have a repair option available. Thanks for the grill cloth dying tip, interesting. Well... I know now there is a bandspread function, it caused me some grief in part 2. I will just say I wasn't aware it was there... 🙄

Reading all the comments about starting your own transformer winding business, most of them are joking of course but the reality is that there are very few transformer winders around now who will deal with small units like these. Most of the companies that do transformers are more on the industrial side and charge quite a bit to do small transformers. Over this side of the ditch in NZ I know of only one chap who is still winding transformers and he's getting on a bit. Eventually he will pass on and there will be one less option for getting them done. I have encouraged a young chap who is surprisingly skilled in electronic repair (he's only 17) to look at learning the art of transformer winding as it will serve him well for the rest of his life and provide a little extra income on the side.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Год назад
I don't want to be winding transformers all the time but very handy if I need to do one for myself or the occasional friend. If I had tried to get this rewound it would have cost hundreds of dollars and the guy that used to do them for me retired. I might as well put the money into a new winder. I hope your young friend can set himself up but I doubt there is much money to be made from the venture, at least from the hobby side of it 👍🙂

Great video! You wouldn't think something as electrically simple as a transformer could be such a complex nightmare, but here we are. Looking forward to your next video as always.

Hi Stephen. They are a simple device but a bit of a learning curve to get a decent result. I have been looking for chassis punches, especially 'D' punches but they are many hundreds of dollars, even for one punch. A much neater and cleaner chassis hole making option. Thanks Stephen 👍🙂

Stay well David. It's always nice to see that the exceptional build quality of those 50's era German radios is still appreciated all over the globe. The transformer is faulty because of a wrong setting in the voltage selector, I guess (240V vs. 220V spec.). We can make do with the original transformer here in Europe without problems, even after all those years. Don't hesitate to ask European enthusiasts for more antiquities, we can still pull those old radios from the junkyard on a regular basis, if you can pay for shipment :)

Fantastic machine and what a wonderful understanding wife you have there, sacrificing the holiday money for the winder. Watching the machine spinning and the discrepancies in the winding, I wonder if it's just winding too fast and there's a bit of bounce in the wire especially since you're winding onto a square spool. I dunno, just a thought. Great to hear you're getting through your health issues, that's the most important thing of all.

Respect, good recovery from egg-on-face (desk, schematic). There looked to be a lot of vibration when winding (some to be expected, but the table looked to be joining in the fun). You can use a step drill instead of a hole saw, if you use it in a drill press you should end up not having to file, he says, confidently.
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
The bouncy table might well be why gaps were developing in the windings. Something to add mass to the whole setup (like stone? cementing flagstones to the top of the table?) could get that issue sorted.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Год назад
The table is quite solid, the camera was shaking a bit. The problem with drilling the hole was that it was off centre to the original hole. I used the piece of wood to create a new off centre pilot hole 🙂

Very nice job with your winding machine! If you look at the video, when the windings laid down perfect it seemed like the lead was right on, when they skipped a bit, it seemed the lead was a little ahead of the windings. All in all a great addition to your kit!

Wow ! That was fascinating and relaxing to watch. Now that i'm actually working on a radio myself, i understand so much more everything you are doing. The winding machine is just great and for somebody like you it's money well spent. I've seen a few other videos of guys working on similar German radios who were just as surprised to discover s selenium rectifier in a ''capacitor can'' format. One of them almost never figured it out in fact :-). Can't wait for part 2 to come out, i'm especially curious to see what you are going to do with the damaged corner.
@DavidTipton101

Thank you Raymond. It would be tricky to follow along without some prior knowledge I bet. Once I turned it over I could see it was the rectifier 😄 Part 3 for the case, sorry Raymond 👍🙂

Hi David, good to hear that your eyesight has improved. The winding machine is very nice, I suggest rigging something up so the wire feeds off of the spool directly into the guides. Your video skills are very good. Wiping the egg off of the schematic looked cool. Well done as always. Kudos and shalom!

Nothing worse than rewinding a power transformer. You have a top of the line machine there. I don't think Don from Restoreoldradios has one so sophisticated. Always a great learning experience from you on how to do things right. But you're not done yet. Too many things left , so on to a part 2!

Few notes: leaky paper capacitors always read high on DMM or similar cap tester. Tester is measuring the time to charge the cap, and the time is now longer due to leakage. You should get a leakage tester (insulation tester) to be sure, good cap will read OL on such tester (more than 1000 gigaohms). I replace them on sight, except for really special cases (like a tone cap with shield that has 0V DC on both sides). Small value electrolytic caps: I usually put leave them in place, but disconnect the + side (the one that isn't grounded) and keep it for the looks. I install a new small capacitor underneath, so that some of the originality is preserved, and the capacitor body acts a bit as a grounding shield. Also the tolerance for those old ones were -20%/+50% or even +100% at some cases. But the main problem is leakage current. Those caps are usually in high impedance circuits and even 0.1-0.2 mA leakage current can be too much. So I do 3 tests on caps: 1. capacitance, 2. ESR, 3. leakage current at close to rated voltage. Just my 2 cents. Btw really liked your transformer winding :) I'm sure this radio will end up even better than it was from the factory
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Год назад
Thanks for the notes @michvod. I was aware of most of them. I have a megger and do use it to test caps, I don't usually bother as I replace them anyway. Interesting idea to hid smaller new cap under the old ones. The winding was interesting. I hope to get better as I do more 👍🙂
@michvod
@michvod Год назад
@@DavidTipton101 Yeah, I love that winding machine, and your skills. Yeah burned transformers aren't fun. For the caps, I try to preserve as much of the originality, so leaving the old components in, of course disconnected is always a consideration. I also restuff paper capacitors sometimes, but only on rare radios.

@DavidTipton101 very clean rewind. In 73 I studied rewinding motors, I wish we had equipment like that! Modern csps are so much smaller than back then, much better quality too. I would be happy to buy caps from Carl but shipping half-way around the world is not practical. It is a great detail that the transformer label was in such great and reusable condition. Still saying the occasional prayer for your past health issue. ❤

It will be interesting what you will do with those buttons! WOW! That is one slick coil winder!! That transformer looks like it's been under water! --- At 36:30 I use a small butane torch to the wire; then some fine sand paper to remove the varnish.
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648
I'd always simply used fine sandpaper or emery boards; no need to burn the insulation which might also embrittle the copper wire.

Great video, you were doing fantastic rewinds with the old system however the new one looks so much easier to use. I have watched a lot of videos on repairing the German made sets and it seems the transformer is usually a major set-back in these repairs. Doing a full rewind surely is the answer for those with the skill, work arounds abound and are interesting to watch but the skill that you have in these repairs is mesmerizing, Great to watch such video's early in the morning with my coffee and Danish!
