With the radio finely working I turn my attention to the cabinet. It has been dropped and split open. I attempt to repair and refinish it but I have several mishaps along the way.

Every time I think "he can't do anything more impressive," you do something like this series. Your perseverance in the face of shorted transformers, stuck slugs, and destroyed cabinetry is truly inspiring! Thank you.

Wow! I did not expect to start my Friday morning with so much sanding and cabinet work. I’m exhausted! Seriously, though, that was an absolutely amazing job. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a dramatic transformation of a broken and chipped cabinet to the result you’ve achieved. The only thing I do differently is that I usually mark out that black trim on the side with a permanent marker once I’ve done the staining itself and before the gloss coats. Those thick permanent markers hold well on the corner and I guided it with my finger to get a uniform line around, I have had good results with this method to date. I don’t know what else to say except that I am absolutely gobsmacked with the result. Congratulations. That’s definitely a Portuguese gold medal winner (on the German radio restored by an Aussie) 😅
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 10 месяцев назад
Haha... have a cup of tea to settle your nerves Manuel. I was halfway to fetching a black marker to do the black trim but wasn't sure what the clear would do. I will heed your suggestion and experience next time Manuel. Oooo... a gold medal. Thanks 🥇👍🙂

Dave the term "old world craftsmanship" and maybe a collision with craftiness and perseverance are the key takeaways from your wonderful series. I watch you patch this cabinet back together, splice trim strips, delicately polish things, aggressively buff and restore and it just really cheers me up. Been having a rough time this year with certain aspects of life and to sit down and watch you do what you do with the absolute skill and craft you do it with makes days that might not be bright at all much brighter. I feel like you are a good mate and would be a joy to have coffee (I am a would be connoisseur) or a tea your preference and chat. Since that is at lease impractical as much as we would like to, this is almost the next best thing to share your humor, skill. perseverance and mischievous going on, so much fun! Just know you warm hearts, encourage and put a smile back on my face when it needs one badly with these well done restorations. Much love from our family to yours from our little home in Mobile, Alabama in the USA. Please be healthy and keep the videos coming we enjoy them more than you can know!

I'm so sorry you are having a rough time John and thank you for your heart-warming message. I guess producing RU-vid content can be more than splicing a few bits of video together. I have taken your message onboard and will endeavour to produce content for you and others to (hopefully) enjoy. Thank you John 👍🙂

I heard Rolls Royce build their lacquer up to 1mm, then finish it by sanding it back to 0.2mm to get that luster and finish on their wood trims. That extra bit of sanding really makes a difference. There is a difference between gloss and lustre. That silky smooth feel as you run your fingers over that smooth finish, it just feel good and looks good too

All i can say is WOW. What a transformation and resoration, first the multitude of problems with the radio and all of your hard work that went in to the re furb of the chassie. Now that you had that under your belt , you turned your talent on the the cabinet, I can see many, many hours of hard work that went into just the cabinet, let alone the radio chassie. And this is why i keep coming back to your channel Dave. I mean a free MASTERCLASS on radio restoration almost every week, what more can a guy that loves to learn about all this stuff ask for ? The electronics parts were fascinating enough for both newbies and more advanced vintage tech savvy folks, but no that wasn't enough for you, you just had to surpass yourself yet again with this amazing cabinet work. Almost 44 minutes that passed like 5 minutes is a feat in itself. I admire your finesse when re finishing these old guys, but in this case your patience and determination to get it perfect is simply astonishing. You have given me great ideas for the RCA 87-K i'm working on at the moment, as you know (wink wink). Be well stay safe, i'll be there for the next instalment as always. Thank's for sharing all your knowledge, God bless.

That cabinet looks amazing. All that effort was worthwhile. With the poly spray cans I've found that even after inverting the can and spraying to clear the nozzle it still sputters the next time you use it. I remove the nozzle and soak it in some turps overnight before the next spray and that seems to work well. Absolutely stunning restoration both electrically and cabinet wise as usual.

@@DavidTipton101 Very much so. Like yours it presented a few challenges but that's part of the fun. Taking a bruised and battered radio that hadn't seen a soldering iron since the day it left the factory and doing one's best to get it back to factory condition and giving it another 50 years or more is special. Not my best sounding radio (that honour belongs to my Graetz Fantasia 622) but the one I'm most proud of. 😊

When wet sanding, I add a couple of drops of dishwashing soap (like Dawn) to the water which helps lubricate the paper and cuts down on those sanding "grabs" you were experiencing. Love the series and the result!

Hmmm, David I can't help noticing that you have a bit of a thing going about re-finishing. I don't think any other viewers picked up on it so I'll keep it between the two of us. Deliberately making "mistakes" so that you can do it again is the first sign of "refinishingitus" it's a little known condition that if untreated can get out of hand. Right at the end you admit to four attempts then you accidently let it slip that there might have been five. I'm keen to help you so if you want to come to Wales I have sheds full of radios that you can refinish. Hoping this helps. Keep up the good work and what a magnificent result.

You do such incredible restoration work! I am so impressed with your tenacity and perfectionism! And I have a little Deoxit story for you and your viewers. My brother has a 25 year old Polaris ATV. About 5 years ago, the ignition switch was acting up. He had a hunting trip planned to Colorado and was afraid he might get stranded in the mountains should it decide to quit. I sprayed Deoxit into every crevice of the switch possible, rotated the key probably 50 times, spraying often. It freed up, started working right and still operates perfectly to this day. Deoxit is awesome stuff! I cannot recommend it highly enough.

G'day David, the timing of this video couldn't be more perfect for me. I was just given a STC TR6100 Aussie 1960 transistor radio, it was on a skip bin, but I got the radio working, but the cabinet is rough and has the same cosmetic case conditions you have here. You not only tackled but gave me a blueprint on how to tackle my own project. Thanks for the endless quality content and ideas you document. While my little tacker is not worth much, it's a great project I'm looking forward to practicing on with restoring the cabinet thanks to your guidance. Have a Coffee on me! Cheers! Rick

Just watched this through again and realised I didn't leave a comment the first time. Loved the Queensland covid borders ad at the start! I thought I was the only one that ended up stripping radio cabinets over and over again! I always thought everyone else got it right first time! But persistence usually pays off in the and and this was a spectacular result! Now I have to do the cabinet on the Bush and you've set the benchmark so bloody high I haven't got a hope! Ah well, I'll give it a go. Cheers Dave

Hi Don. The covid add, or lamb ad was genius. If you watch the whole ad there is a reference for WA as well. I usually only do it once Don but this one kept going wrong. If I was able to use the spray gun as normal it would have been OK. You do pretty well on the cabinets Don, I am in awe of your results too. I'm looking forward to your struggle 😄 I started on the Hotpoint you sent over, thanks 👍😀

Hi again David...I wanted to mention how spectacular the final result of your restoration was! One can't help but wish we could witness the response of the recipient of this complete restoration, as in many of your other videos. BTW...I just wanted to recommend a good 1st Thomas Johnson video; "Restoring an Antique Lady's Writing Desk". This one solves so many of the potential issues one might come across on an old/broken timber radio. Hope you can sit back and enjoy!! -Chris
