I'm a year into my Embryonic stage at my new place. The ideas are coming but the landlord requires me to have professionals come in to do all the work. They must be insured and have a recognized trade certification. Good luck finding a certified carpenter in Toronto to hang a cupboard! $250 to have an electrician install a smart switch. I had to hire a company that specialized in hanging TVs at $500 to put my TV on the wall. The landlord must approve the tradesperson, receive a project plan with drawings and materials specifications before approval. Tiling a backsplash is about $750. If I do not follow the requirements the landlord issues an order for it to be removed., if not complied with they provide a work order and charge me to remove it. Toronto social housing is so rule-bound because they are afraid of liability suits.

Not only is your work very nice. So is your sense of humor and your smile. Even though you had the right idea for lifting the bed frame. I'm glad you asked for help. Nothing wrong with that. Your tutorial was well done. Full of hands on and technical verbiage. The commentary at the intro was quite philosophical. And NASA thinks they know about space. It was just by chance that I even caught your clip, and we will never meet. But I wanted you to know. I had a great time watching you shape your space. It was like watching a little bird building a beautiful little nest. Thumbs up pajarita linda I was sincerely inspired.

TheLaoruga it's an interesting statement you said. I'm a tech/shop teacher and yes, girls are generally well behind the curve compared to their male peers. I teach 14 year olds. I always encourage the girls to get their hands on tools and learn them. seems like it doesn't happen for a few reasons 1. they don't have fathers in the home. (yes, of course not all males are good at building/making) 2. they have a fear of the noise, heard of the potential danger or of getting hurt themselves. this is a good healthy fear and can make them a lot safer in the shop compared with boys and easier to teach. 3. the genuinely don't want to do that kind of work and have little to no interest in it. the don't think about the potential wisdom it can give them. they're 14 for goodness sakes...I was the same way back then to some degree on other topics! This being said, more fathers have to equally approach their daughters with the opportunity like it's just a given they would and should learn. not all boys want to learn and use either. I really like this subject of tools and work skills concerning boys vs girls. I'm on the front lines of it everyday and welcome any mature and non-insulting discussion free of assumptions!
@GetHandsDirty
@GetHandsDirty 7 лет назад
Hey guys! Quite interesting conversation going on. Well, I've always enjoyed a lot being around materials and messing up with tools since I was very young (which I am not anymore, though you can still call me "girl", it's perfectly fine :D). I could agree to a certain level to what Shane said about the father example around the house because my dad is a philosophy teacher but always loved to build stuff and get his hands dirty since he was little kid too, so I've seen him fixing and creating stuff around the house all the time. BUT my sister, younger than me, doesn't have any interest in this type of things (other than watching my videos). So, two girls with the same parents and with a father making stuff around both of them and one loves it and the other doesn't have interest. So, not always true. I love to see people making things and try them myself since I remember myself really. I was 3yr and would spend hours following the construction guys at my grandparents home when they were making cement and plaster and all those "dirty" materials. I kind of feel like a desire to mess up with materials and matters. Still, I was afraid and still am of some tools and feel nervous the moment I realize I am making a cut without face protection for example and don't even start the cut without it. I don't really think it has to do with genders, though I am probably a non-binary person. It has to do with cultures and breaking or not breaking the rules and like you said, have the chance to have those possibilities and opportunities put by others in front of you. Also, social pre-concepts. You may have the chance to choose metal work or paper craft class as a girl and you could enjoy the metal class but you end up choosing the paper craft one because you don't want to be separated from your other girlfriends from your class. Maybe this brings us also to some lack of self confidence, genuinely and bravery. Which shouldn't be needed...but we can't forget the world we live in and how things are STILL very much pre-conceived.
@TheLaoruga

Saludos!

Thanks for sharing part of your personal story and thoughts. I find it interesting, the question of "nature" vs. "nurture". That is, do we do what we do because of how we are raised or is it in our genetic programming. I tend to think it is both. I do believe genders may have certain tendencies, however, I do not think those tendencies are universal. That is, I do not think all "boys" are identical or all "girls" the same. You and your sister are examples. I have three siblings and each of us is quite different. Study results of astronaut Scott Kelly, a twin that spent a long stint in space were recently announced. Apparently, his DNA began to evolve while he lived in space, responding to weightlessness. His identical twin brother stayed on earth and his DNA did not change. I think this study may show our DNA is evolving even more than we might have realized. So it should not be surprising that everyone of a particular gender is not exactly the same. Thankfully, today we can celebrate the differences and take inspiration from those that are able to accomplish - like you have.

Don't mess with the hair. I am glad to see you picked up a sponsor. I wonder why you used machine screws in wood. I am not crazy about lag bolts either but there are options out there besides them. Any movement at all over time is going to wobble out the machine screw threads that are in the wood. Then you are going to have to repair that wobbled out hole. Great video as always.
@MacKenzieOfSweden
@MacKenzieOfSweden 8 лет назад
I agree. They look great but Im worried they will fail when things start moving, like rolling over in your sleep. I wonder if they could be glued in, and the bolt becomes more like a dowel rod.
@GetHandsDirty
@GetHandsDirty 8 лет назад
They can't be glued in because I won't be able to remove it from the space if I need later :p it still doesn't move a hair so far and I've used it for a while. If something starts to lose, I will change for fat threads screws.
@jeffstanley4593
@jeffstanley4593 8 лет назад
We call those "coarse thread' screws in the US. :) If you ever choose the lag bolt route, I suggest some of the various "Headlok" or other products from this company: www.fastenmaster.com/products/ledgerlok-ledger-board-fastener.html I have used them and like them. Even the head of the Headlok is rather decorative. Hey, your English is way better than my Portuguese of which I know nothing. Keep on putting out great videos.

+Micah Powers you put a screw into a stud, not a bolt. To put a bolt into stud would require the stud to be drilled and threaded. So not the same thing really.

Marc Oneill they do make bolts that are made for wood smartass. lagbolts. and you dont have to have the hole threaded to put a freaking bolt through. sometimes a bolt is just meant to hold 2 things together. you throw a nut on the end.

You really should have used coach bolts instead of those black machine bolts, with threads that fine you are only achieving a friction fit. Nice joints though :)

Yeah, I wanted to give them a try because I saw them being used before with wood threads. We'll see how it goes over time. If it becomes a bit lose, I'll just put some thick lag bolts instead :) but so far so good, it doesn't move a hair and I've been up there for almost 15 days ahah
