Rather than using plywood or some other modern material, pressure treated pine fencing pickets (slats) were used to construct the roofing soffit. Rabbets were cut on the long edges of each board on a table saw. Each board was loosely fit against the other to allow for air flow into the roof space to combat condensation and moisture issues. Doing this negated the need for soffit vents. The soffit was painted to match the log walls and facia. Slat-board soffit gave an old fashion look to the cabin. The painted pressure treated material provides a bug proof, rot resistant benefit that should last a very long time with little maintenance required.
