I only first saw this movie 7 or 8 years ago. Missed it in the 80's for some reason. It's a great old sci-fi. Everyone should see it at least once. Classic.

"Missed it in the 80's for some reason." Because it was released in the 70's 😅 (Forgive me. I just had to. After STAR WARS this movie non-existed. I've seen it over 25 times at this point. Star Wars... meh.)
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism
@@screenplayhouse4932 Oh. Well, the reason I said 80's was because I was only a toddler in the 70's so I wouldn't have seen it then, or if I did, wouldn't have remembered it anyway lol. It would have been the 80's when I was old enough to have watched it, when it wasn't that old of a movie. I guess it would have been more correct to just have said" I missed this one back in the day." :D
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism
@@screenplayhouse4932 That's amazing you place this one not just on par with Star Wars but ahead of it. It's "good" but it's nowhere near Star Wars level. To me, you have to get to Blade Runner (theatrical release) and Alien to get closer to Star Wars level for a sci-fi. Those two are really close of the era. This one, while good, I don't think I'd place it even half the level of those movies. This one is on the level of Soylent green. Good, and must see movies at least once, but not those levels of movies. This is of course subjective and you are just as correct as I am. I'm sure the sales of the movies, will show the majority, share my views too, though.

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism I presumed as much. It just sounded funny to me.

@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism I know that's the common belief, but let me explain myself. The very first STAR WARS was the best one. Fan's claim EMPIRE was better but empire wasn't a complete story. We know Star Wars was the best because it's been remade by Star Wars about 6 times at this point. My problem is that that Star Wars is all appearance, no substance. They admitted this in the day. "It's like a old 30s/40s Flash Gordon serial." CORRECT. And nothing more. In the day it was visually spectacular but it neither gave you an acting or writing reason to every really re-see it. Outside of once in a while for a lark. LOGAN'S RUN is all substance, sometimes appearance. This was because it was low budget. (Although at the time it was considered a GIGANTIC budget.) In THE NEW YOU shop you can tell they were recycling bull$hit machines from LOST IN SPACE or wherever. The cheesy way they put charges in the mall walls and detonated them. Like I said I've seen this thing over two dozen times and only the last time did I notice that in the early 'chase the runner' scene, you can actually watch the Sandmen run from what must have been behind the scenes. It's plainly in shot. And I won't even start about Box. It goes without saying. But this is a story about ideas. That faded a decade later but only became more compelling as time passed. If you read the opening text of this film very closely, you'll see it talks of the collapse of the environment. If you pay strict attention during one of the under the city scenes, they imply that there were giant tanks of fish to feed the city populace. (And that the machines failed and food was now coming from runners themselves.) This was just creepy sh!t in 1976. (If you noticed it.) It's now very scary stuff. Because we may be forced to build cities to save humanity while we ride out the destruction we've done to this planet. Where Logan's run was a 'joke' it's now a little creepy for being up to date. In case you think I"m a kooky fan (and God knows I am) the first notion of 'the internet' I know of appears in this film. But it's Tinder plus Trek's transporter. Early in there's a scene where Logan 'surfs' available hotties for sex, and they are transported to him one by one. One other AMAZING thing in this film is people at carousel flipping around. There were no dummies or digital effects. All real people on wires. Cirque Du Soliel long before it happened. And the Jerry Goldsmith score. Some giggle at the funny synth sounds. Most nowadays do not understand that no score like it pre-dates LOGAN'S RUN. The way audiences were WOWed by Star Wars effects they were WOWed by the weird 'new' sounds. I also think LOGAN has a much better love story than STAR WARS. And it even had a feminist angle which... was likely... a first in Science Fiction. The story ain't perfect. One of the most painful realities is that all those liberated people would have died outside within the year. They were children who had no idea how to take care of each other. But the story isn't about that. It's about the fantastic WHAT IF of classic sci-friend entertainment. One thing I love is the fight scene at the end. Between the Sandmen. Between 'brothers'. You saw Logan wasn't eager to fight his best friend. That it was Shakespearean tragedy. When Logan kills him with the American flag, it means was more to me soul than light saber fights. Way more drama. Last thing. When I was a boy I identified with the gang leader in cathedral, about my age. Years later I identified with Logan. Now I have the most in common with the old man. I made my wife a big fan too.

I was 11 years old when I saw this movie in the theater back in 1976. That was a full year before _Star Wars_ was released. I loved this movie then and I still do now. I even have an unfinished aluminum prop kit of the Sandman Deep Sleep gun that can be built up to fire just like the ones in the film. One day I'll get around to finishing it.

Yes and no. This was the last and best produced of the 1960's style SciFi epics. (for the other end of this spectrum see Zardoz). There is a lot of interesting art direction, but you never quite escape the feeling that you are in a 1970's Shopping Mall and the Fort Worth Water Gardens. The model work in this in particular is kind of dated, even for its day. I mean this was 1976, not 1967. But the shots of the domed city look like they were just film of the static display you could see from the People Mover in Walt Disney World. But many of the live scenes are amazing. The rig they built for Carousel was astonishing. And the Box scenes were great. But nothing revolutionary for its day. Do we remember what came out just a few months after this? Star Wars! Followed shortly by Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Although I do have to give them credit for the Sandman's Guns. Which were one of the greatest practical effects ever put in a movie. When the actor pulled the trigger blue flames actually shot out of them. They were rigged up with small flammable gas cartridges and igniters. Both Michael York and the guy who plays Francis managed to burn their thighs when they holstered them. But the actual shooting props are masterpieces of carefully designed craftsmanship and ingenuity.

Those Sandman Guns art one of the coolest practical effects ever made. They are actually shooting a flaming gas. Like an oversized butane lighter. Michael York burned his leg from not realizing they were hot.

The electronic segments, while they may have sounded 'futuristic' for the 1970s, sound outdated for today. This is something that sci-fi composers say to try and avoid when composing music for 'out of our world' films today. Mr Goldsmith did a good job but imagine if Star Wars had been composed with electronic keyboards, I don't know if the original soundtrack would have held up today.
