Logan's Run: Selected Scenes '75 (restoration v2.0)

Assembled in November 1975, this is the earliest known compilation of film from MGM's LOGAN'S RUN (released June 1976). Designed to be viewed by theater owners and industry professionals, but ultimately deemed too slow paced. Instead, it was further trimmed down resulting in the faster paced SELECTED SCENES '76 (also viewable on this RU-vid channel). Since this was not intended to be seen by paying audiences, many "spoilers" are included. It also contains clips from deleted scenes and a few alternate camera angles. The music is primarily sourced from ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968) because Jerry Goldsmith had not yet completed recording all of the score for LOGAN'S RUN. Never issued on any home video format, SELECTED SCENES '75 is scanned and restored from a vintage 35mm film print. Perhaps the only print left in existence. A comparison with the un-restored version is available here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LVZ8589bQs0.html

As much as I love the visuals of today and how realistic they can make them look, this is way more intriguing and marvelous to watch. These were more than artists. They were craftsmen that created these worlds. I owe my imagination and curiosity to films like this.

I’ve seen this movie many times Love watching it over again. I was visiting Niagara’s Falls with my honey and two friends we watched this movie one evening the next morning we toured the falls. Going down the elevator to a room where you were fitted with plastic rain gear and sandals and then led down a misty path to the falls. As we and other tourists walked along I kept chanting “We’re going for renewal” Apparently others in the group had also watched the movie it was a fun time that day.

Some of the metaphors in Logan's Run exist today IMO. Youth obsessed society and the eradication of elders (wisdom). Pleasure is perceived as the ultimate form of happiness. Society is closed off from the forgotten reality "outside"...we've forgotten our past.

We are now all well past 30 and have turned into shrill mockeries of our parents, actively disenfranchising the poor and powerless, shrugging at injustice, advocating nationalism and war, and destroying the world that we once declared we would save. The remake of "Logan's Run" has been bounced around for many years through various production companies. None of them got very far in development. The last effort was in 2018 by Hunger Games writer Peter Craig. In 2015, XMen: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg took his shot at it. The rights are currently known to be with Warner Brothers. The list of attempts go back to the 1990's and if you read the Wikipedia page on the book, you get the drift. The authors wrote other books about Logan in Logan's World, Logan's Search, and finally Logan's Return. Honestly since Warners can't seem to get the DC Universe right, I don't think they would ever get a reboot done right either. The current argument (typically) is to either respin the prior movies plot line, or get closer to the original book the authors laid out. Since people that float around the Marvel production universe seem to work better with "message based sci-fi". perhaps they are better equipped these days. And yes, the people at Marvel are very much Logan's Run fans. The casting of Jenny Agutter (Jessica 6) as SHIELD Councilwoman Hawley in Avengers and Captain America: Winter Soldier was no fluke. They knew exactly who they wanted.

@@MichaelSHartman Why are men so arrogant? The world doesn’t revolve around *you*. Woman don’t base their decisions on how they look based on what *you* find attractive. There are other men and women out there who find tattooed, pierced, butch women more attractive. But here’s a shocking revelation for you: it’s doesn’t matter who finds what attractive; the only opinion that matters is the person deciding whether to die their hair, get a tattoo or a piercing, or to dress butch.

@@JeantheSecond If you told me women don't care about a man's appearance, and say whatever makes him happy, I would call you a liar. Women are more critical than men. If a once handsome man was 400 lbs, had tattoos on his face, pierced his lips, nose, and tongue, had long hair, and went around in sweats passed a group of women, they would be tearing him apart on the threshold of hearing. If the guy needed money, knives would fly. If a quiet nice girl to the side wondered why he let himself go, or get in that shape, I wouldn't blame her. When you get old, and wrinkled, you realize what you have lost however small that was. It is so temporary. You see a young person male or female destroy that without thought, you shake your head, and wonder why. I will bet money you will lose that high and mighty attitude one day.

I saw this movie way back in summer of 1976. It played in theaters in the New City and Nanuet mall theaters in New York. Matinee tickets were 2 dollars and regular ticket prices were from 4 to 4 dollars and 50 cents. It was okay. I also saw that year the Captains and the Kings TV series which also starred Richard Jordan.

Considering that they have to die at age 30 is because living space is limited, it seems odd that any part of the city would become abandoned.
@Vektorix28205
@Vektorix28205 3 года назад
Many settings in the movie exist as fairly loose adaptations of segments of the original novel, without the context that explained why such areas existed. In the novel, Cathedral was a burned-out and abandoned section of Los Angeles (which was the primary setting rather than a nameless City) controlled by drug-fueled youth gangs - so dangerous that even Sandmen mostly left it to itself. The desolate and ruined state of that area (and others visited during Logan's Lastday travels) was a symptom of the slow deterioration of the computer system that ran the world - it had been set up before the mandatory death sentence at age 21, but by the time of the book no one had the computer expertise to properly maintain it. The Sanctuary network used these areas outside of the computer's control as way-stations to keep runners off the tracking grid and out of the sights of Sandmen.
@erictaylor5462
@erictaylor5462 3 года назад
@@Vektorix28205 That's one of the big problems of adapting a book for a movie. You may even have something explained but in editing the explanation is cut, leaving a mystery, like why an abandoned section of a city is left abandoned even when space is desperately limited. There was an episode of SG-1 that had a somewhat similar story line. They found a small community living under an energy dome on a planet with a very toxic atmosphere. Under the dome everything was nice. They even had everyone linked to the central computer so everyone had access to whatever information they needed. But the power supply was failing, forcing the computer to shrink the area protected by the dome. To make room some member of the community would be compelled to leave the dome, where they would die just outside. Everyone else would have their memory modified so the person who left would be erased from memory. Terrifying concept, but the computer wasn't evil. It was just following it's programing coming up with a solution that would allow the computer to keep as many people as possible alive and happy for as long as possible. No one could fix the computer because no one had the knowhow (though the know how existed in the computer itself) but also, the computer fixed it so no one even know there was a problem. The SG-1 team fixed the power supply, but I remember one of the main characters in the episode had a wife that he could not remember. It was a deeply disturbing episode, especially when you realize the computer had no malicious intent. It had been programmed to keep everyone alive and happy as long as possible. Knowing your protective dome is shrinking and members of your community were being killed as a result would have made the people unhappy. It was just carrying out its program in the best way it could. I think the same is true for the computer in Logan's Run. Same story in 2001. HAL was not evil. He was just trying to find a solution to a problem. Computers do not usually consider moral dilemmas. Of course, a clever computer programmer would know that computers will fail sooner or later, and they should program to computer to teach the humans how to maintain it, and why they should. They described Box as an "evil robot" but like the others, Box was just doing what it had been programmed to do. One sort of food stuff stopped coming, and a new sort of food stuff started coming. What is a Box to do?

Might be good if they went with the original story where the death age was 21 instead of 30 plus no domed city, but the whole world followed the death age (no renewal just death) and was the playground of the people, except the Serengeti which was used for executing runners (if not shot first) by tribesman on giant ants (if my memory serves me right). Francis turned out to be Ballard, the leader of Sanctuary which was off world somewhere (Mars orbit?) I really must reread the books.
