I think I have listened to this live version of Angry Eyes at least 50 times. It was my favorite on their album many years ago - and wow - what a band! I mean every single musician on stage is 1000% keyed into this song and what a powerhouse! I only wish I could have attended this concert live! Jim Messina is a true master! I am in love with the flutist!
2 years ago I saw Jim Messina at the Gunter theater here in Greenville South Carolina. He and his band were freaking amazing! He did music from Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins and Messina, as well as some of his solo stuff. He and the band were in freaking credible. They even did a monster ,complete version of"Be Free". To do the song with six men and no other orchestration is quite the feat.
These guys were in the incredible era when music was written you played the crap out of it, never got tired of it, months would go by and you'd play it again and your were digging it like the first time you heard it !!! Creative artists from the heart & soul, the stuff sticks to your ribs !!! Lucky to grow up in the early 70's where we has a huge arena of musicians to experience, nothing will ever duplicate it !!!
My Drummer Mike Adam's turned me onto L&M in 1970 I'm pretty sure it was 1970 but l digress,So I'd never heard anything from these Cats except DannysSong _/ ur Mama don't dance.they were way good players way back then. Then l learned Messina use 2 play with Poco.if ur not really hip 2 old school listen 2 the Sittin In album
Revisiting this video...there could not be a more perfect performance of any song. Everyone knew their part and performed perfectly together! Man this was really really enjoyable! I would gladly pay $150 to see this live. And when I saw them in the 70's it was probably a $7.50 ticket.
I visit this video every other week or so. I agree, it is perfection or as close as humans can come at the very least. I bought the vinyl new as soon as it was released. I've been following Messina since he was in Buffalo Springfield and it was through him that I discovered Kenny Loggins. Been a fan of each and both ever since.
Im a professional driver and this is the perfect song to put on late at night when driving down the freeway. Music like this keeps me alert and groovin' during those long nights on the road.
Sir, you fully speak my mind! I SO miss the days when you actually had to know how to play an instrument to be considered a musician! Today's "music" is filled with no-talent wannabes.
Unfriggin'believable! When music was music and didn't get much better than this!!! One of my all time favorite L&M numbers, what an incredible work of art!!!!
@@honestjoe7377 It's still worth listening to music today. Look at me! I'm listening to this music right now! You just have to be choosy. Fact is, and I was around in "those days", there was plenty of crap music then. Less then now, but still plenty of it!
@@stevecareskey6542 Because what you're hearing on record is the best one out of multiple takes + production fluff...to sound as good live as you do on record is a feat even on a good day, and it's a testament to these guys' god-given musical talent
Great arrangement...Saw it played Live in '74 and it sounds even better now! Messina's a great guitarist and never got the acclaim he deserved...TY for reviving this exquisite work
This is one track I take with me when testing/buying new stereo equipment…it has it all, vocals, bass, strings, guitar, brass, woodwinds, drums, keyboards…and basically what a live track should sound like. Just turn it up loud and see if the equipment can produce!
Never gets old. Love the infusion of jazz and rock. Bought their first album back in college. This type of music is just not made anymore and it is very sad. This is not mass-produced; it is complex, intricate, and worthy to be called great music. What do we get today?
What an incredible "live" performance...forty years later they're playing as near to the studio version on the album I had...freakin impossible !! . What a jammin arrangement of wonderfully tight musicians...a joy to hear !!
I will venture to say that is due to the talent of the musicians. Both Kenny And Jim are consummate pickers, who have surrounded themselves with great players! Pretty awesome show we're seeing here!!
I really don't get why they don't tour again. I saw Jimmy in Santa Barbara this year and I have seen Kenny solo and they both are really good individually. Together it's magic though, and it does not have to be only L&M stuff, Kenny can still do the movie stuff and Jimmy can do the solo country. Would be an epic tour and I mean epic. Imagine if they did a tour with Poco. Oh my god I'm losing my mind thinking about it....lol!!!!!!
MD Honze Yeah man I agree. They sound great together. Sometimes I think the music was better back in the day cause I'm getting older. But no, the talent was so much greater back then in general.
Holy mother of music, how did I never catch this before! Toss the studio cut, this is a 12 course feast! Textured, subtle, tight, incredible playing by all!!!!
A feast, indeed, and the visual aspect of this jam adds immeasurably to the flavor of it. But no need to toss the baby out with the bathwater: I'm keeping the magical studio cut forever.
I drop to one knee, bow my head, and quietly say ~ " To the Gods above- Thank You for allowing me to witness firsthand the music of the '60s, '70s, and '80s. I have been blessed."
@Robert Doc Waltz Your damn right you would😂🤣😂🤣 Then throw in The low spark of high heeled boys,by Traffic and would nominate you as one of the very best FM radio Dj’s ever to spin vinyl on radio!!!! Phoweeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!! Never really heard of these two,I’m 51 now So............If you see this post/comment,please pass on to me what I need to look up and listen to by these guys to enjoy more of there sounds........ Thanks!!!!!! Groove to the mutha fuckin groove brother
@@patrickmcneil5575 Oh my God, that would be a playlist. Haven:t thought about "The Low Spark" in so long. We were so lucky to be young then. Am going to que up " Low Spark" next. Cheers Patrick. Last time through "Angry Eyes".
The saxophone player is possessed by his muse. Excellent playing. He almost stole the show. Jim's solo is one of the tastiest ive rver heard. Perfect performance technically by the crew and kudos to the engineer who recorded and mixed this timeless classic. I cant ask for more.
Everywhere. There is a TON of talent accessible today - more than ever before. The only difference is that you have to seek it out yourself instead of getting it spoon-fed to you by radio and TV. You can find a dozen brand new artists every day if you have the time and an internet connection. I grew up in the 90s, so I also know what it's like to turn on the radio and hear amazing new music all the time. ...but today there is infinitely more music available. Please don't confuse the sad state of _pop music_ with the state of music in general. ..and just for the record, I LOVE Loggins and Messina. My father worked with them quite a bit back in the 80s. Many of my all time favorite musicians were around before I was even born. I 1,000% understand the respect for older music and the frustration with today's pop music. ...but there's more to music than pop. I also can't help but mention that EVERY generation thinks that their music was the last era of good music. I'm sure your parents thought boomer-era music was garbage too. ;)
I'll never ever forget walking into a then premium audio store, my first visit to such an establishment. I was coming from the sound of a $40 transistor radio....in mono. Angry Eyes was playing on their very best system, I heard it before entering the store and once inside felt it. Things in my little world were never the same after that.
Wow, what memories. I remember when this was the #1 hit. I was driving down Santa Monica freeway listening this song, when I spotted that giant billboard with Loggins' face plastered on it...... Just wow !
This is an AMAZING PERFORMANCE ! The Talent Level of these musicians is completely off the charts ! I absolutely love this song. Beautiful music for sure.
Just saw Jim Messina last night and a couple of these guys were still with him. They closed with this and absolutely killed it. The audience sang every word with them. It was so cool.
In part due to Jimmy Messina's producer's ear, L&M has always had a reputation for featuring some of the finest musicians in the biz. In this band: Shem von Schroeck is a fine singer and the bass player other players try to sound like; Gabe Dixon on keys is coming into his own as an outstanding musician/singer/songwriter; drummer Steve DiStanislao has played with a who's who of bands, as have all these guys; Jeff Nathanson, sax; Steve Nieves, percussion & sax; Gabe Witcher, fiddle & dobro. Tone monsters.
Wow. A big band, all working together as one. Even the soloists are still playing with and reacting to the other musicians. Live music on this level is like magic. Also: props to the drummer back there, playing with subtlety, finesse, intensity and power.
Saw them back in college play this song. their backup musicians back in the day were phenomenal. Al Garth, John Clark, Micheal Omartian. The original live version was a very long jam. Just epic.
"Blindness binds us together with a false disguise"! Loggins & Messina had some of the greatest lyrics - not to mention musicians and melodies. Their vocal harmonies were also virtual perfection. One of my favorite groups of all time! (And I've never seen them live!😔)
Always liked that song, performed here wonderfully by a smooth, tight band. Kenny has always had stellar vocals, and he hasn't lost a step. Great to see he and Jim back together for this performance.
This has always been at the top of my playlist it just doesn't get any better then this . As kicking sax drums guitar the bass everything is on point .
An extremely underrated duo, an incredibly harmonizing duet, they par and pair up with anyone, anywhere, and anytime. Great band. I have all their albums.
GAWDDAMN!!! The drummer and bass player are incredible, and ALWAYS right where you want them to be. The whole rest of the band could not do what they do without them. And, if you're missing out on all the jazz voicings of the keyboard player, you're just not listening.
Jimmy’s instrumental to open this iconic song is nothing short of singularly justifying the creation of the Fender Stratocaster. Marvelous playing. Music industry titan, that Jimbo.
This reminds me exactly of the time when my wife and I saw them at a concert in Milwaukee Wisconsin in the summer or autumn of 1974 and played this song for the first time I heard it. They don't look the same of course, but the performance and the overall sound matches perfectly. Thank You, whoever produced this for doing such a great job! You nailed it!!!
This is probably my favorite live recording of any concert. The song, the musicians, the arrangement, the videography, audio quality, performance, the crowd energy - it's all just so perfect.
Wow, I can close my eyes and I am back in 74' in the Portland Sports arena watching them do this live! Awesome that these guys are back doing this great music again!!
He'll with da curfew! They couldn't find me cuz I was cruising in my air conditioned 65 GTO! JAMMIN wit da Craig power play and da Jensen 6x9 s on the back deck. Man those were goooood times! These guys played in Cajun country back inda day and that was my first concert and the best evah!
I grew up with this music. I agree it was arguably the best and most productive time of new and different types of music. Real voices playing real instruments. But I humbly disagree that great music is not being made. Try researching some Americana stations on the net. There is some great music out there. Give it a try, I think you will be surprised.
this tune coast me 2000 dollars in 1977 / i took my brand new chevy blazer / to a car radio shop heard this song outside in a pickup an it was loud / then the manger said hit the amp an that hit me in the chest like a baseball bat / the manger said can i help you an i said i want 1 of those in that blazer
