I'm now 80 years old and have listened to the Doobie Brothers since their beginning. One of the best bands who's sound never gets old. This has to be one of my favorite tunes. It soothes my soul.
Great skill, you mean. Some talent too, of course. One may be born with the rhythm and pitch of a musician, a genius already. But it takes skill to play the instruments the way they do. They aren't born with that ability.
If you have never been to a Doobie Brother's concert. You have to go and hear REAL music, REAL musicians and they sound just like this LIVE without over dubs, or anything artificial. Thank you and Bless you Doobies!
Just saw them in Virginia Beach a few wks ago. Fantastic! Held on to the tix for almost 3 yrs due to Covid. Michael McDonald was there too. South City Midnight Lady might be my fave Doobies song. The 1st time I saw them was in the late 70s during my college days in California. Ive seen them a number of times thru the years. I think last time prior to the VA Beach was a tour they did with Steely Dan. (And I love Steely Dan too)
@@lla788 Oh my gosh, Doobie Bros with Steely Dan! We had it made back then with the music and the concerts! My Old School..one of my favorite songs ever!!
Agreed. You turn on classic radio and they play listen to the music and Black Water when the Doobies had so much more in their library. This and another park another sunday get no air play
Well said, Mike. This is such a beautiful song and I love Another Park. Saw them 4 times back in the 70s. Superb musicians. John on the slide is so cool. He plays so many instruments and really is the heart of the band. Really adds to their wonderful sound. My favorite band. Unlike some others that I like, I play their albums all the way thru with no skipping. They are that good at writing and playing. So glad to see them still together after 50 years.
@@michaelmilberger7066 Both songs are so melodic, and have very slick key and chord changes, not to mention perfect harmonies. I'll do 80 mph with the windows down when I hear "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove", but I'll crank up BOTH of these on my BOSE stereo when I'm chilling at home. You have excellent taste, Mike!
Same here Emory. I saw them in 73 or 74 in Frankfurt Germany while in the Army. (draftee) I appeared in audience photo of their "What were Once Vices are Now Habits "album cover. I totally relate ! Cheers. 71 here for a few more months.
It was a South Lake Tahoe lady that saved me. We were married for almost thirty years. I use to to watch her as she slept, asking God what I ever did to deserve such an amazing, beautiful, loving woman. She passed almost six years ago from cancer. Sometime's when I come home at the end of the day I'll smell her perfume in different parts of the house. No one has been in the all day. I miss her touch, her smile along with her true love way's.The feeling I use to get in the pit of my stomach that would take my breathe away when thinking her.The goosebumps I would leave in the morning (no it wasn't from the morning chill) it was from knowing that we would be together at days end. We did see these Doobie's at the forum sooo many years ago. A great evening with my best girl and some great Doobies!!!
Odd, I don't know you yet I often said the same thing looking at my wife oalmost 40 years. Met her in Cotati 1976. She was killed in a pedestrian-automobile accident 3 years ago two 4 days ago. If it wasn't for her and a previous love a few short months in 1975 I'd have never made it past 27. That was 40 years ago.
It’s unbelievable 😅I realised that you are right 😮 50 years… it’s still an awesome song and really hard to think of anything better. Peace to you too and to brothers and sisters all over the world ✌️ 🕊️
The Doobie Brothers have been so fortunate...John McFee is such and amazing multi-instrumentalist. He so compliments Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston on EVERYTHING they do. Great stuff!
76 years old..had a productive satisfying medical career but when I hear the Doobies I am transported back to the days when I met my wife of 52 years. We didn't have a pot to pee in but those remain some of my fondest memories. I will always be so grateful for their music and the memories it helps me recall.
i'm 62 yrs. old now and these guys were a huge part of the soundtrack of my life ! grew up with them and songs like this take me back to warm northern calif. summer evenings as a young man and timeless fun with my friends at the american river! first rate musicians all of them! bless the doobie brothers!
I love John McFee. I'm sure he's kinda regretting the mullet he had here, while Pat looks awesome with his short cut. No matter what their hairstyle, I still have their music on vinyl. I love me some Doobies.
Doesn't this song get better with age! I think this is one of the BEST Doobies song ever! This song just rocks! Great harmonies and rhythm. Peace! Steve
I’ve commented on this video before but have to do it again. This has to be one of the greatest rock ballads of all time. I was lucky enough to see them in concert this summer. Amazing that a group I was listening to in the late 70s are still rocking in the 2020’s. Thanks Doobs! You’ve given me pleasure in listening to you for 50 years! Can’t thank you enough
This song takes me back a gazillion years ago lol. .... Whenever my big sister left for college.. my mom listened to this song over and over again... mourning over her going away. The family dynamics changed the day she left for college, but it never changed my sister's, my mom's and my love for the Doobie Brothers and this song. You can't get any better than this. So many emotions. Oh how intense music once was. I'm glad I'm a product of the 70s.
After 49 years, I finally get to see the Doobie Brothers again at Choctaw Casino July 3rd. They were the first concert I ever saw at the Dallas Convention Center April 1975. Still have my ticket stub ($6.50) This time it's considerably more, but it will be well worth it! One bucket list item I will never realize would be to meet Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston. Wore out his album "Still Feels Good".
I listened to this song on a loop for 10 hours straight on my way home from NO after working Katrina for 4 months. Didn't need a therapist when I finally got home.
I always thought that Pat had a good voice & he's also a great guitar player. He also looks better with the short hair. But i think he went back to his full blown 70's Doobie length again.
+KoolCat ! He is indeed sporting his long flowing locks. I have never seen him in short hair and he does look good. He has a great smile. I grew up with long-hairs and it makes me smile to see these old hippies hanging in there 🎶
Probably one of the most beautiful Rock songs from the 70's or any generation. Beautifully written and executed...it caused hearts to soar and many a child was conceived while that 33 1/3 spun round and round.
Pat was always second banana. First to Tom Johnston and then to Michael McDonald. Maybe he liked it that way. His songs, and picking, were essential to the Doobie Brothers sound. He added the special element that enhanced their music and was the cornerstone of the band.
Pat is a cofounder and I think if he would have had a problem with the direction of the band he would have made that known. I think Michael got way too much influence, but that is just me
Frankly when I think of the Doobie Brothers Pat Simmons is the first face and voice that comes to mind. They wouldn't be the Doobie Brothers without him!
You can argue that they may not have had the same commercial success as the Beach Boys, the Eagles, or any other popular American band during the last 40 years. But their longevity and popularity is second to none . They were always one of the bands you anticipated when their next album would be released.
The is no question in my mind that the Doobie Brothers is one of the best bands ever!!! Pat Simmons is legend! See them 4!times in concert. I will take their music to the afterlife with me!! Gd bless them!!! 💖💖
March 2023. That song, South City Midnight Lady, came out March 1973. 50 years ago. THIS is STILL one of the most beautiful songs in the rock repertoire.
Just sit back.... glass of wine and enjoy perfect harmonies, vocals and instruments.... I've watched them LIVE.... zero disappointment. Playing For Change " Listen to the Music" ... Good People, Musicians from way back when.
The Doobie Brothers are one of the greatest bands of any period, that is why I have always said I grew up in the best of the best period for musical expression. Rock on.
And they can't even get a nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of shame. They put talentless rappers in the ROCK Hall and they ignore the Doobie Brothers.
This song seems it is one person picking and one set of lungs. It is perfection. I LOVE this song. It brings back wonderful memories of my youth. Thank you Doobie Brothers for being part of my life! Y’all rock!
I have attended at least 5 Doobie Brothers concerts over the years and they are still incredible to listen to, they are really a group of fantastic musicians and a pleasure to listen to.
This song certainly is special. There must a story behind it. Now, my favorite song is "Clear as the Driven Snow", but that's because I'm a bass player. I can't help it.
When I was 18 years old, I bought my first used car and an 8 track tape player mounted under the dash. The first 8 track i bought was The Captain & Me, that tape must have gotten played a million times. Loved their music then, a long time later, loving it every bit as much now. Got to see them play live once in Halifax, Nova Scotia. So entertaining to watch real talent perform. The Doobie Brothers, Bob Seger, Paul McCartney & Van Morrison are the best concerts I've ever seen. Cheers!
Fine job by both. A little trivia, 'Skunk' Baxter played pedal steel on the album version of this song as a session player before he became an official member of the Doobie Brothers.
Yeah, Jeff Baxter… first in Steely Dan, then Doobie Brothers, now working as a high level defense contractor. When's that guy gonna stop slackin' off? ;)
Plus,I understand he played with J.Hendrix Experience back in the day...this guy definitely has set some kind of record for an awesome life most only dream about.
