ChromaGlow is a new saturation and distortion plugin in Logic Pro 11 that models several different hardware units, and combines the best of these into one powerful plugin. ChromaGlow is great on tracks and busses to make them pop in the mix, and can also be used to apply saturation to your masters. In this video I explain and demonstrate all of the features in ChromaGlow. Enjoy! Support the sponsor of this video! Unfortunately, ChromaGlow is only available if you have an Apple silicon chip computer as I found out after updating to Logic Pro 11. While some of the new features are available (I haven't tested them all yet), ChromaGlow is not if you have an Apple Intel chip computer. I had a somewhat similar issue with Master Assistant when I upgraded to Logic Pro 10.8.1 in November 2023. But at least I can still use Master Assistant. I'm just limited to one "Character" choice which is the "clean" setting. All the other character choices are grayed out with a message saying you must have an Apple silicon computer. In the case of ChromaGlow, it doesn't even show up on my list menu. Not even a limited version of it. Come on Apple, my computer isn't that old (2019). I've never had this issue with any of the other Plug-In manufactures. As long as I'm running the required operating system, I'm usually good to go. I got to believe Apple could have designed this to also work on an Intel chip, but chose not to for obvious reasons $$$$.
Yeah, it's a real disappointment. I spent a lot of money on my 2020 iMac and to not have access to some of these features is a real let down from Apple.
thanks, as ever! looking forward to the influx of info this week. possible request: i make music with a friend who plays guitar and we used the old stock logic drummer for years. i'd generally load up a kit and find a pattern/player we liked. then i'd switch the kit to a producer kit (later after we'd assembled the song) so we could apply plugins to each kit piece (and because the producer kits just seemed to sound more pro). if there are any big changes in the drummer area, it'd be cool to have an episode about it. i was playing around with it today and it seems relatively self explanatory, but i could very well be missing some gems.
Sounds good! I found however, that the Chroma Glow is a CPU hog. I replaced it on a few tracks with a UAD Oxide Tape and my CPU load dropped considerably..
I’m sure you already know but once you’ve put it on a track and are happy with your settings you can freeze or print the track. This was standard operating procedure for me for quite a few years till I recently upgraded my computer because all plugins (especially virtual synths) have been getting more and more CPU heavy.
You are correct as I also found out after upgrading to Logic Pro 11. I had a similar issue with Master Assistant when I upgraded to 10.8.1 last November. Although I can use Master Assistant, I'm limited to only using the "Clean Character" type. All the rest are grayed out. But at least I can use Master Assistant. In this case ChomaGlow doesn't even appear in the effects menu. I guess Apple wants us to upgrade to a new computer. A 2019 computer is too old for them.
I have an M2 processor in a mac mini. When I have three instances of them activated, the cpu goes up crazy high. I love it but I don’t think I’ll be able to use it in my beat projects, maybe one at 2-3% on the master…
Pre M chip Macs don't get the stem splitter feature M chips only . That blows! Yet, I can use RipX...?? No ChromaGlow either😡 Oh well at least I get to use the new session players.
If professional producers can make music for Taylor Swift on a 2017 MacBook Pro then an M2 is overkill for you. Google maxxbeats, he does exactly that.
It is interesting how the audio industry identifies something as a bug and sells the bug fix as a feature only to return years later a sell the bug itself as a feature. "We're making money now boys" 🤣
@@dadduorp Depends what you mean by years past. The kind of distortion they're trying to replicate, without completely succeeding, was on everything ever recorded during the pre digital era. So it's like saying everything pre digital is faulty. Those who grew up with that sound don't like the super clean sound of digital.
@@damion2226 All I’ve read is that it requires an Apple Silicon processor Mac to work. I don’t know why the guy with an M1 machine is having problems. I plan to update my M1 Mac soon so I’ll see if I have the same issue they’re having.
@@damion2226 I updated my M1 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM to MacOS 14.5 and updated Logic to 11.0. I have the ChromaGlow plugin available. It’s located in the ‘Distortion’ submenu when you select a plug-in to put in a channel strip.
@@Legends_Of_War It was the first series of Apple's own silicon chips. We're on M4 now with the new iPad Pros, but for Macs the best you can get right now are the M3 series. Basically going forward Intel Macs are being phased out by apple so a lot of new features will only work on Macs made after late 2020
Admire your enthusiasm, however, we're shocked about how - the same - the essentials in Logic still are. Mixer , Library, they're not 2024 really. Shame. Pretty happy we've switched to Bitwig couple years ago. They listen. Apple is not. Good luck!
STEAMS AND SATURATION ITS A BAIT FOR PEOPLE TO BUY M1 or M2 ITS A NEGATIVE THING WHILE AKAI SOFT SERATO SPECTRAL LAYERS IZOTOPE LALAL AND MANY OTHERS DONT NEED THAT ANY WAY NICE VIDEO
One should also mention that ChromaGlow even on a M1 mac (or newer) is NOT available if run in Rosetta mode. Which is necessary if you wish to work with Melodyne in ARA mode... Unfortunately this still has not been resolved, which is really frustrating...
This is a really great plugin, it opens up the sound. I have izotope mastering advanced, my question is will the sound be to dry or saturated if I use ChromaGlow on instruments on mix and then again on the Master channel?
I just put this on my drumset bus and it's so nice. I'm using "Magnetic" at about 58% with "Colorful". Brings out a nice analog haze around my drums. :D

@@Bittaminagreed, but he’s not wrong. Apple has been known to do stuff like this for a while. I love and have used Logic since it was owned by Emagic, but this is all a business after all.
Why I don’t see chromaglow and stem splitter (new) on my Logic Pro under distortion category & under functions even after updated to 11 Please someone help me…thanks
