Using a bus to make side-chain compression work on a MIDI instrument track instead of rendering something to audio is an awesome side comment you made. It works really well. This solves a very big issue for me when I'm still in the music editing phase but I want to get the side-chain compression between bass and kick right early on. Also very cool effect controlling the synth pitch and tone with the side-chain compression. I can see creating elaborate things with this.
Great video!!! If your ever run out of video ideas to post it would be really awesome if you recorded yourself making all kinds of different synths from scratch and explaining the whole time all of the little effects you add and most importantly why!

Would love to see if you could achieve the same bass without Side Chaining. I know a professor who told his students that he would fail them if they side-chained (as you might imagine, he is a sound designer and builds his sounds from the ground up) I think that however you get to the sound you want - it really doesn't matter, but these types of challenges are fun. Anyway, really enjoyed this most helpful vid.
Great tutorial man! Keep up the good work. Btw, which version of Logic pro X are you using? I'm using 10.2.0 and it does not have the same UI on the plugins as yours.
Why wasn't the bass line going back up in volume wherever there wasn't a kick after you side chained it in the compressor like it did in your last side chain tutorial?
+A Knife Yes, you can. I do it this way, because I prefer not to have to copy/paste automation. Also if I decided later that I wanted to change the depth further up or down, I would have go in and fool with the automation. Personal preference, works either way.
