Ableton 11 is out!! I'm aware that a lot of thigs I talked about being missing from 10 are in 11. I'll be doing an updated video for both 11 and a revisit of Logic X very soon!

The quality of this video is excellent! Two things you didn't mention: 1) Ableton's warp modes. They are incredibly powerful, and in my opinion make up for not having flex tool. 2) Wavetable and Analog synths in Ableton only come with the Suite version, which is the most expensive version. Just something to note.

Came from MasterTracks Pro and Cake Walk years ago. I have both Logic Pro (like a grown up version of both) and Ableton Live. Your fun and intuitive comparison was VERY helpful! I have been struggling with the learning curve of Ableton for MIDI but do love the instruments and tools. I related to your audio perspective and appreciated seeing the intuitive differences. Still clinging to Logic Pro but wanting to be comfortable with Ableton...Thanks for your POV

Great video, and super useful for people trying to decide between these two DAWS! I definitely needed this kind of video when I was starting out! There's a few important details that were missed on Logic's side, and thought it would be worth mentioning: for instance, zooming functionality (which I find more intuitive in Logic with shortcut keys and frustrating in Ableton); the fact that you can't split MIDI notes in Ableton (never understood why); the ability in Logic to have 3 different tools at once if you're using a mouse (left click, command-click, and right click) which makes editing, manipulating, and chopping clips a breeze; and even down to having a proper mixer in front of you like in Logic, where you can see everything, including proper meters with exact levels, and you can see all your sends/aux channels, etc. One final thing: you mentioned the drum rack in Logic not looking welcoming, but not sure why you are still using Ultrabeat, when you have the amazing new Drum Machine Designer which integrates the new Sampler/Quick Sampler, and I find is far better than Ableton's Drum Rack. Anyways, I see the benefits of both DAWS and jump between them like you, but since the 10.5 update, Logic has made a major leap in functionality and design that I think is important to mention. That being said, I know it would take too much time in a video to go into those kinds of minute details. And, of course, in the end, it all comes down to personal preference! Especially now that Ableton 11 will finally(!!) have comping like in Logic. Again, thank you for making this video!
@Schmorgle
@Schmorgle 3 года назад
Such great points!! And the more comments I read about things I missed in Logic, the more I'm certainly compelled to make another video: especially with Live 11 coming out. I've been dipping back into Logic recently as some of my older tunes are in there and I want to finish them. I've been trying to utilize the multitool function while in there and for whatever reason it just doesn't click with me (pun intended). There's something about Ableton's single mouse click that feels more intuitive than the multi-functional mouse click in Logic. I always find myself accidentally using a tool I didn't mean to use and switching back. Especially when cutting and fading. I think this is entirely preference as I can see on paper how Logic clearly wins here. As for sends and aux I absolutely hear this. It's way more clean in Logic. Once I got used to Ableton's flow, I find myself needing to check the meters in a "classic" way less imperative. Maybe I'm just...not a good mixer lol.But I've never felt the need to stare at the mixer longer than a few seconds while creating. I mostly do things by ear and at a glance. Perhaps a bad habit. Lastly, the new Drum Machine designer was horribly neglected purely due to the lack of experience. In fact, I don't even think I had it updated at the time of my recording. I've seen my buddy use it along with the smart drummer and it seems way more powerful. That'll be my first stop on the next video. Thanks SO much for your thoughtful comment!! Keep making music!

I just switch to LPX about 6 weeks ago, after many years of working everyday in Live. There was a steep learning curve coming from Live, and it was necessary to be patient with myself, and take the time to google very routine stuff. But since Live was my first DAW, I didn’t realize all the features in lacks, and frankly I don’t need live performance features in my DAW. I couldn’t ramble on about it, but I don’t think I’ll be going back.
@wittkacy
@wittkacy 3 года назад
@@Robert-kx8mp Glad you were able to find the DAW that works best for you! I totally hear you on these points and 100% agree. That being said, what works for you and me might not be what works for the next person. I know people who have also gone the other way (from Logic to Live) and swear that they'll never go back. C'est la vie! *shrugs* :)

Cool video man, thanks! Just wanted to chime in (I know I know). You forgot about the "Mixer" in Logic and how you don't have to go into another window to access it. Also, all your plug-ins are right there. Now I'm not 100% sure about this next part because I use Logic for work (professional audio engineer) so I could be wrong. However, I'm pretty sure that Logic has a drum machine designer that is pretty much exactly the same as what you showed in Abelton. If my memory serves me correctly it's a series of boxes that you can drag and drop (or maybe load ??) different sounds in. However, I could be wrong. Thanks for the video tho man I'm getting ready to learn another DAW for work and I wanted to learn a little about Abelton. I'm currently using Logic for all my mixing and Harrison Mixbus to master. It's a toss-up between Abelton and Studio One. Thanks again!

hey thanks :) that was informative and enjoyable - you’ve earned a new sub! i love logic and I haven’t seen other youtube videos touching on how logic crashes more often. I also think the top window in logic that tells you what chord you’re playing on any midi controller is sooo underrated. I find ableton’s session view quite confusing too - i don’t really understand how the session blocks interact with the arrangement view. Would love to see you cover something like that!
@Schmorgle
@Schmorgle 3 года назад
Thanks so much for the sub and thoughtful comment! I too agree that Logic has some great accessibility features like the chord naming thing you mentioned. Crashes only seem to happen when I'm running a really full session with a lot of plugins, I've only crashed on Ableton once while bouncing stems for a huge session. As for the session view, I truly think it's a matter of preference. I definitely was confused by it at first, and now I strangely prefer the workflow. That's one of those things where it truly matters how well you operate in a DAW that should hold the most sway. Thanks again for hanging and I'll happily work on more in -depth coverage of both DAWs!

I've been using Reaper for a while now and love it. I do wish it had a comp feature similar to Logic Pro though. You can kind of do it in Reaper, however it's not as intuitive and I find it easier just to put my second take on a brand new track. It's cool that Logic comes with so many MIDI instruments. My DAW didn't come with much, so I just got a MIDI controller. Yikes! That Logic drum rack does not look very user friendly. Ableton's built in synth looks like it would be fun to mess around with. I think if I had to choose one of these, I would go with Ableton because of its great drum and MIDI tools. Maybe I'll pick it up in the future.

Am I just bad with DAWs, or are Ableton's synths just... bad? When I play all the sample sounds down the list many of them sound the same and they sound weak. Like you said, I end up going for 3rd party synths too. Is this where mastering comes in? I'm more of an orchestral composer so I'm not familiar with electronic music programs, I just kind of expect it to sound at least decent without me having to heavily edit EQs, gains, whatever just to make it sound adequate... or am I just really bad with DAWs?

Wow, very useful video, thank you ! I've used ableton before, but since switching from pc to mac recently i've been considering moving to logic, but i can see now that that workflow just wouldn't work with me, soooo gonna be sticking with ableton ahah

What about the Mac vs pc thing? Is ableton any different on the different platforms? And what about ableton free? Is it worth a try?

AutoVlogs I’ve used it on both and it’s almost virtually the same experience. There are obviously some hot key differences and menus live in slightly different spots, but it functions almost identically. Luckily you shouldn’t have problems running the base program on most machines. And ableton free to totally worth the try! They have some useful tutorials too so you can get a feel if it’ll cover your needs pretty early on.

Interesting. The more I watch/think about this, the more I'm convinced it's all about a trade-off between easy-to-use/speed vs. a ton off options. What get's you in the flow? Endless possibilities, or instant creation? That being said I personally think Ableton have managed to put a lot of functionality in software that is still comparatively easy to use. I surely hope that's still the case with Live 11....
@Schmorgle

It totally is still easy in 11! But yes, you’re spot on. Whatever keeps you in flow.

I just got a Macbook pro with the M1. My main goal is to record, mix, and EQ my own vocals. I’m into stacking harmonies, so I end up with tons of tracks (often 80+) Would I have a better experience working with Logic Pro or Ableton? I also have a Roland Juno that I’d like to play around with from a midi perspective. What do you all suggest?

I would say Ableton - but I've never tried Logic but used other DAWs such as Reaper, Pro Tools First, Studio One Free, Audacity and Audition. Ableton is designed for Live stuff - hence the name Ableton Live - and thus has almost zero latency (especially if you use the stock plugins) and really CPU light. That doesn't mean that it does never stuttter -although I have a M1 Pro now, my old 2015 used to make it CPU spike when I added third party plugins like Arturia REV or iZotopes Nectar or Ozone Elements onto a few tracks. M1 Pro -hardly ever happens unless I go crazy with mad delays and the feedback zaps the CPU. You would need to get Live Studio though, Live Lite has a 8 track limit, although you can use many more clips (confusing but it has two views, Arrangement is like a DAW, Session is not and fairly unique - people usually like one or the other).

With the M1 macs now, logic pro x all the way. It's so much performance now even compared to my stupid trashcan mac pro. It's insane.

Why not ableton on a Mac with M1? And I’m guessing u use lots of plugins right?

@@aaron4757 I’ve tried both Abelton and Logic on my Mac, and while I think Abelton is more customizable and comprehensive, I find that Logic is just so much easier to navigate and organize everything that my workflow is wayy much more efficient
