Jono - I’ve just watched all your videos on Logic, and I found them clear, focussed and unambiguous. This accuracy with no unnecessary or superfluous dialogue makes them easy to follow, informative, and very enjoyable. Thank you very much indeed. (And yes, I subscribed)
Thanks Jono, I had a completely wrong concept of parallel compression until you explained it so well and the way automation was demonstrated was superb! Well you have done it again! Another great tuition and please keep up explaining what key commands you use as you go through the video, so helpful to me as well. Thank you so much.
This is a great explanation about parallel compression, I finally figured out how to use a compressor and wrapped my head around that, and this gave me some extra tools for my tool box thank you so much!
this might be the best video on para comp I have found on youtube. So clear to understand and even as a bass producer I've learned so much. Well done mate
The new parallel compressor channel is inserting gain in the mix, clearly this would create the sense of more energy when inserting it. Great video but gain staging is essential for accurate comparison.
I think this is the most Fantastic and easy-to-understand video on the entire RU-vid on parallel compression. Sir, Thank you so much for making the life of aspiring artists with your knowledge
Wow man, you are a really great teacher. Very clear and concise and an excellent graphical display to your computer while you explain things. Thank you!
Nice n simple explanation sick job man … quick question though I see you have a master rack working doesn’t this change how the parallel compression sounds would of been great to hear it without any mastering!!’ With me saying that great video man
Excellent info. Clear, concise and dumbed down for any newbie yet a great refresher for any expert that might need a back to basics lesson. Only thing is with a British accent like yours I keep waiting for you to go off on a tangent about Frodo or Narnia and an imminent Orc invasion. I imagine when you hear an American do the same you expect to be sold a used car you didn't want.
Jono, as a first year undergraduate on a degree with no prior experience of music tech, I really appreciate this video. Is parallel compression the same sort of concept as side chain, or is it different? Sorry if the question is daft 😊
This is fantastic to hear. Glad MT and Jono can help, Jeremy. Parallel compression differs to sidechain compression. In short, sidechain compression is when you route a signal to a compressor on another channel. The compressor will activate only when triggered by the incoming signal. The most common example of this is in electronic music, in which the kick drum - often the driving force - activates a compressor on the bass channel. The compressor will “duck” the bass every time the kick drum plays. Hope that helps!
Incredibly hard grooving track, with a lovely chord progression. (the first one) Is it your own creation? And of course an excellent explanation regarding parallel compression. Thank you very much, master.
I never thought to ask this but why not just duplicate the drums track and turn down the other instruments except for the heaviest transients? Is it the glue?
Your videos are always really clear and easy to follow so thank you! I was just wondering if when mixing vocals, does it ever make sense to do multiple compressors? For instance, using dual faster and slower compressors directly on the main vocal track, and then having a separate track with heavy parallel compression for some added crunch to the vocals? Would those three compressors work well together?
Hi ! Great video but I've some question concerning the "send mod" that you select when sending your original track into your bus. By default Logic Pro put it on "Post Pan" mod but there's also the "Post Fader" and "Pre Fader" mod. What are the differences between these 3 mods ? I mainly understand parallel processing and parallel compression but I don't understand this point ^^ And also what about the general volum of your drums when parallel compression is on ? Does this means, for example with what you've done, that the general volum of your drums is louder ? Specially when using the automation, does the DAW compensating it ? Thx for your work and excuse me for bad english ^^
Should be pre-fader. Then you can turn the drum sub fader down and still get the same signal sent to the PC aux. Imagine if you had to automate volume on the drum sub somewhere.. you would change the amount of signal sent to the PC compressor which is set to work at a certain threshold. So you would have that problem of also having to automate that threshold. Pre-fader fixes it.. just make sure that PC aux is also sent to the sub master.
Great stuff! I am wondering, how is this different than setting the "stereo out" of all four channels to Bus 3, instead of using "send". I figure there is a difference, but was wondering what that difference is technically and how that would change the outcome and also the control you would have. I'm guessing one is pre-fader and the other one is post maybe? Thanks a lot for your tutorials, they are massive help.
Send Effects allow you to send varying amounts of each signal to the effect.Allowing you to alter at will.If you change the output as you say, then you would be sending all of the signal.
I’m not sure if this question has been asked or not, but would you apply this Parallel Compression Aux before or after the Drum Mix Bus has been processed? Thanks!
Does the "AUTO' button affect your release? I would assume you want to disable it ,if your going to manually control the release on Logic's compressor.
