Semboro had two OK 0-6-0F (fireless) locomotives which were so called because they 'suckled' their steam from the mill's boilers. The high pressure was such that the steam condensed to hot water as charging occurred but some of it turned back to steam when the regulator was opened.
As such, they had a limited range around the mill where, apart from shunting loris, they would marshal mud skips and deliver bagasse fuel to the locoshed.
Visitors could expect to see at least one charging event during an extended visit.

The locos survive in the shed (remise) but they haven't been used for quite a few years.

Greetings Rob, years ago you very kindly sent me a load of slides of the Java sugar locos after I wrote to you having seen your item in the modeler book of narrow gauge. That was quite a while ago and unfortunately don't have the slides and the model is long gone when I left home. I have recently started another 009 model of a fictional Pabrik Gula. Your films have been very helpful toward making some thing that I hope will be a convincing model when it's done. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S0wN10c7sQA.htmlsi=KppB_GRujhoSSMmX

An interesting analogy for these fireless engines. O&K put seemingly quite large cylinders on these, do they have an advantage for fireless locos? Helping the steam expand more, maybe?

Correct, these are low pressure engines which falls in operation. See dlm-ag.ch/en/fireless-technology/

Fireless locomotives of this kind had a pressure reducing valve between the steam dome and the cylinders, which are of necessity large. For a complete explanation of the physics and engineering aspects of fireless locomotives, see the book by Baker and Civil, published by Oakwood Press in 1976, or if you read German, Karl Pokschewinski’s book, published by Lok Rundschau Verlag in 2000. You will soon see that the Semboro fireless locomotives were unusual (even for Orenstein and Koppel), in that they had their cylinders at the front and not at the rear, below the cab. And incidentally, the Semboro locos were not the only fireless locomotives to work in Indonesia. Jakarta (Batavia)’s steam tram locos, (introduced in 1882) were also a fireless design.
