I grew up in an Irish American Catholic working class family. My father was a good catholic and a good father but he used to get the biggest laughs from Dave Allen. Dave is quite funny and takes some good natured and non offensive jabs at the church. One of our local UHF stations carried his show every night and brought him much happiness. Your reaction took me back to some of the best days of my childhood.

David Huber, WTTW in Chicago used to air Dave Allen At Large almost every Sunday night, usually preceding Monty Python's Flying Circus with the opening announcement: "The following program, "Dave Allen At Large", contains comedy sketches and jokes which may be unsuitable for younger and more sensitive viewers". Great stuff.

Dave Allen is my all time favourite Comedian ... such an intelligent comedian who told such great stories.... He was rarely on tv but you would huddle around to watch him when he was. RIP

I used to love Dave Allen so much. Being allowed to stay up late on a Saturday night to watch him in the early 70s was such a treat.

The funny thing was, despite being an atheist, Dave would sign off his show with the words "Goodnight, and may YOUR god be with you." He didn't believe, and he lampooned the Catholic Church in his sketches, but he respected people's right to faith.

Well it could be taken that way, but it could also be taken to mean "good night and take your bloody God with you.", i.e. feck off all you God botherers. I suspect that's how he really meant it, but being a mischievous wee fella made it deliberately ambiguous.

Apart from one time! One week he did no religious jokes or sketches, and got letters of complaint! so the next week he did nothing but religious jokes and sketches. At the end of that programme, he said "Tonight I think I'd better say, Good night, and may my god go with me" ps, having read the other comments: I never took it as an insult to the audience. To me he was saying, May whatever god you believe in comfort you

Dave Allen was originally from Ireland. I think his family name was Mahony or O'Mahony! A true class act. Rest in peace, Dave, and thanks a million for all the laughs 😃. Love your reaction. God bless from Ireland 🇮🇪 🙏 ☘😅😂🤣

I used to love watching Dave Allen, especially when he did his ghost stories. They'd lower the lights, put a spot on him and off he'd go with a spooky tale.

I love Dave Allen and remember sitting and waiting for him to come on TV, my girls knew not to disturbed me until his program was finished. Watching you enjoy him and your honest and unabashed reaction has been a joy to watch.

Filmed in a small Hertfordshire village called Aldbury and the great thing is it looks exactly the same today as it did when the sketch was filmed in the 70s. You can visit the pub by the duck pond and the churchyard where the sketch was filmed.

My favorite Dave Allen joke: The Catholic Priest and the Church of Ireland minister greeted each other daily as they road around the parish on their bicycles. One day the priest sees the minister walking up the road. “Where’s your bike?” he asks. “I don’t know," he said. "I think it was stolen.” The priest said, “Here’s what you do. Next Sunday preach on the Ten Commandments, and when you get to “Thou shalt not steal, lay it on thick. If the thief is in your congregation, he’ll surely return it.” A few days later the priest sees his minister friend riding up to him on his bike. “Did it work? The Ten Commandments? Thou shalt not steal?” “Not exactly,” the pastor replied. “When I got to “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” I remembered where I left me bike.”

My Dad was a huge fan of Dave Allen in the 1970s and 80s. I would hear him laughing from my bedroom in a very similar almost breathless way to how you did 😆 There are so many videos of his you’d enjoy watching but I can recommend Dave Allen telling the time, Dave Allen on Religion and Dave Allen on Airplanes.

Dave Allen was brought up in the Catholic faith in Ireland and they were strict,I worked with Irish girl's in the 60s and they went to confession on Saturday and church on Sunday.

I had a friend years ago who was dating a catholic girl. Her parents were devout the same as your dad. He told me 1 night, he was leaving his g.friends house and going for his jacket, he knocked his girlfriends fathers jacket off the peg and low and behold? out fell a 'condom'! But a little known side of Dave Allen, born David Tynan O'Mahoney, was that during the Second World War he was evacuated from Dublin, where he was born, to the small Co Longford village of Kenagh. In last week's Life magazine, I recounted the only recorded explanation Dave Allen ever gave for the absence of his index finger. In a 1994 interview on BBC radio, Allen told a 'macabre' tale of his father, his finger and the chopping axe. Catherine Tate is a fantastic actress. The first time I ever saw her was in Doctor Who. She was funny, but in the sincere and feeling moments she really excelled. Her character was one of my favorites.

Actually, when I was a kid in Ireland, Dave Allen was banned from the national TV network largely because of his religious jokes. We used to be scrambling to the British channels to get to see him.

It is such a treat to see your genuine reaction to Dave's take on religion; particularly Catholicism. It is testament to your character that your faith did not cost your sense of humour. Dave Allen was my weekly highlight on TV in Australia in the 70s, and is still funny as...(well you know what) in 2021. peace.
