While the immediate connotation of the word "Lolita" is Nabokov's literary masterpiece, this short documentary provides an intimate glimpse into the world of a different Lolita. Hailing from Japan's Harajuku district, the Lolita fashion style - with its unabashedly adorable hair bows, petticoats, and knee-socks - has been transplanted all over the world. Explore the Chicago community from the perspective of four collegiate Lolitas, as they examine the origins, peculiarities, and personal meanings of the quickly growing subculture.
This film was created by Lokchi Lam, Christine Lim, Elena Guobyte and Jasmine Heiss for a documentary production class at the University of Chicago, taught by the incredible Judy Hoffman. All the work (pitching to screening) was completed in a nine-week period. We used a Panasonic DVX-100A camera and Final Cut Pro for editing.
As the filmmakers are not Lolitas themselves, we'd like to thank the four women depicted in this documentary for allowing us to glimpse their intimate personal lives.

I must say, I adore that young man at the beginning of the documentary! He was so respectful with his questions! I wish more people reacted this way instead of glaring or making rude remarks.

1:38 ... the reaction of that man... wow. She's cute and wearing what she wants. She isn't exposing her chest, behind, or anything inappropriate; which this society walks by and doesn't mind at all. I don't get it. Lolitas have a bravery and confidence that is, or at least should be, envied. Power to us all in being who we are!

this is fantastically done. not just in content but in the editing as well. Also as someone who is starting to move on from lolita (it's been 4 years now an i'm going otome an natural kei)it's nice to hear from someone who has also moved on to an extent an hear what they have to say. really well done (also imo that classic i'm guessing VM dress, looks amazing on you)

Thanks SO Much for all the positive praise, everyone! I'm just going to echo Christine and Elena in saying THANK YOU! I also have a question: I think that the editing with the pink boots after "more mature" is kind if great, because it reveals that even classic Lolita is fun and cute, and not totally prim and proper. Would you all say this mis-represents the style, or does it work? Your voices are what drive this entire production! Yours, Jasmine

I love brand, especially Baby, but I really admire lolita who can make their own clothes. I don't know why anyone would make fun of that, besides, where on earth do they think brand started in the first place? It didn't just suddenly explode out of nothingness into brilliant colors and fame.

I think with most styles of Japanese fashion and street fashion there's this constant thing where people are like 'that's not so and so fashion' I see it all the time on online Japanese fashion communities, and even non Japanese fashion communities. Which really sucks because it takes away the enjoyment that wearing the clothes is meant to give you. If you're always worying about whether an outfit is correct or not it takes away the fun. This was a great video, really proffesional.

This is so well done! I liked how you showed different types of lolita, that the girls aren't living in some sort of fantasy world. They act like normal girls. I REALLY liked the one comment about how you can dress however you want, just don't call it lolita when it obviously isn't. That is one of my biggest frustrations.

This is a really good video that help explain the basics of lolita and is a good video for people that have no idea what lolita is or have pre-conceived notions of what lolita is that are wrong. I would have liked it more if they could have gone more into depth about the styles of lolita other than the ones that were listed but I understand that this was meant to be a short documentary and that there are limitations on youtube. Otherwise I thought the lolitas were adorable and did great =)

This is really good. I really like this video. :3 The only thing I really really wanna say is that I think the event in which one girl's photo was taken and mocked online is illegal. It's illegal to take someone's photo without their permission and even more so to invade their privacy by posting it online publicly. It just made me so mad.

I agree with you entirely. I've been a fan of lolita for a few years now, and that's the one thing that bothers me about most of its other fans: they worry WAY too much about tiny little things (ex: quality of lace, non-usage of shiny materials etc).

Very very wonderful documentary. I wish it was longer! I want to know why people think it's sexual? I think it's probably the name of the fashion not so much the clothing. But anyways, you girls are very pretty and have gorgeous dresses!

Awsome documentary, you all have such pretty dresses^^ You actually don't have to get your lolita clothes drycleaned. You could wash them in your washing machine(I do). But you have to have it on very low temprature, wash the dresses with many deatials inside out or remove the extra details^^

@Moahoa95 I wash mine at home too, but I don't put them in the machine because it messes up the bow and ruffles as well as ruining the silks and stiffness of built in petticoats on some dresses~ it's good for the cheaper and knock off clothes, but I usually handwash in the bath tub and hang dry :)

@nyccora I actually usually onlny wash my bodyline and some ap clothes in washing machine. Strangely enough, Ap's clothes are sometimes washable in washing machine. I do advise to wash them as little as possible tough since their prints will fade a bit if you wash them to much. I always handwash/dryclean my bssb clothes tough. I wrote that message long ago when I only had bodyline^^; Thank you for correcting me, I had totally forgotten about that comment.

I am talking about the fact that a few Western Lolitas are way too strict when it comes to these so called "rules" such as you HAVE to wear a blouse with a jsk or all items in your coord HAVE to be from one brand. According to my friend, in Japan they are more experimental with their coords and wont shun you for doing something a little different. Now I am not saying that all Japanese lolitas are the same, I am sure that there are judgmental lolitas there as well.

I really like Lolita fashion, I think its so elegant and beautiful unfortunately most of my family dont get it (exept my dad he doesnt care) but I wish they would. I know for a fact I wont stay a Lolita forever because my style is always changing but like the Aristocrat (sorry but i dont know her name) said even if I move on Lolita elements will always stay with me

@Kawaiineko997 Either or.. There's "lifestyle lolitas" that have a very Victorian frame of mind/proper lady, and others that just be themselves, and again, others that already had this lady-like philosophy and have joined lolita. But I think when you are a part of the fashion you are in the subculture - the online communities, the lexicon (JSK, petticoats, brand names), etc etc..

@ImNotNormal247 The book is actually quite brilliant. I've had people ask me if the terms meant the same thing, but I don't find it offensive since the question is actually really honest. People just don't know any better. Lolita fashion isn't a mainstream culture in the West, so, you really have to expect people not to understand it. I think it's best not to become angry at those who do mix up the terms. Just explain it to them honestly and hopefully they'll understand what it really is.
