This is a great video. this game seems like a lot of fun. If you like this game i think you love metal gear rising. it also has an interesting development cycle.
I think the way to approach sexualizing characters in games is to have it work in harmony with the character being sexualized. Bayonetta is probably one of the most overtly sexualized female characters in video games, and nobody has a problem with it because she knows it and she absolutely loves it. She's in control of her own hypersexuality the entire time, and there's never a point where that's taken away from her, certainly not for the purpose of titillation.
I think Duke Nukem's portrayal of male sexuality is kind off hit-or-miss to me. Like, I never grew up with the character and only reference I have is Duke Nukem Forever's depiction. But, Duke's sex appeal is not entirely inherent to his own actions, like you get NPCs (primarily women, at least in my playthrough of the game) in the games commentating on his presumed sex appeal and masculinity, but you never see or hear of it. Although, my argument is only applicable 'cause Duke Nukem is limited to first person, while Bayonetta gets to flaunt and user her sexuality as a weapon and expression in third person. It also to note that the supporting characters around Bayo don't comment her sexual expression as a way to try to get it on w/ her. Even with Luka, he's attracted to Bayo, but his fruitless attitude and his charm are rooted in cute romanticism and they both have a good rapport w/ each other. Like, if Duke were to get a Bayonetta treatment, that'll be interesting. Have him flex his muscles or do bodybuilder-esque poses as a taunt while he holds his guns in creative ways. And don't shy away from it homoerotic, embrace it
@@jdellabeat6245 a straight guy won't like homoerotic, in short you'd be pandering to a smaller audience while removing a larger one. Usually when you keep it straight, people of the other persuasion are still interested anyway. So it makes more sense business wise to keep him straight.
@@nobodyknowsforsure I'm not suggesting you change his sexuality at all lol. Like, subtext. Make the character embrace his sexuality in a campy homoerotic-esque portrayal. The reason why Bayonetta is a successful icon is because the game doesn't shy away from her burlesque performance. The reason why it works because the in-universe fiction doesn't bend over backwards to excuse itself for being sexual in an honest and campy way. Sex is camp. I don't know what to tell you.
I also took it that way as well as hopefully getting a second game. Hopefully with the same art style and a new cheerleader or multiple ones to play with some unique abilities between them. With the tech out there now I have no doubt this would be a banger of a game release.
I hope so! I always wanted to play the game but was too ashamed to ask my mum, I knew what she’d say anyway lol. I’m an adult now with adult money dammit! Just don’t have a 360 anymore unfortunately.
Lolipop Chainsaw is just charming as all hell. Chemistry between Juliett and Nick is just pitch perfect, this zombie killing game somehow legit has one of the most memorable and sweet romances in gaming history. Last time I played it was around 6 years ago and I still remember so much of their banter that it's ridiculous.
I love games with so much personality and I especially like it when a game “doesn’t like block buttons” bc it becomes so quick. I’m not usually a patient person in games so letting me quickly jump around is so fun
This is the strongest pitch to support this game and Suda & the lads. Slick visuals, learned a lot, and I appreciate how u handled the topic sexualization vs sexism. Great vid
Honestly, I disagree. I think this whole "nuance" behind sexualization is just people trying to justify their kinks as some sort of high minded intellectual rethoric. People like attractive people, if it works into the character great if its just window dressing then great too. Honestly people are too overcritical over this sort of stuff. I understand not liking it but one shouldnt force others to have the same opinions as one has.
I remember seeing this game when I was around 10-11 at a GameStop and I begged my mom to buy it for me. She said no because she figured I would be scared from it. What she didn’t know is that a friend of mine had the game and instead of being scared from it, I was laughing the entire time. This game was so completely unconventional and shocking. I still remember my fav boss being the hippie zombie.
It’s funny you said you hope Juliet’s return is in their future plans. Bc literally today, one of the devs tweeted that lollipop chainsaw is coming back and we should keep an eye out for it😁 our prayers have finally been answered
@@archersterling6726 Was it inevitable really. Schlocky stuff is immune to social environment, even if some rando complains, at the heart of it everyone enjoys a campy fun.
I loved the game when it came out. I idolized Juliet lmao. I just thought she was so cute and sweet. Idk how to explain it but I feel like her character was really well made. She seems like the type of person I’d be friends with irl, she’s just likable.
Agree lol I was cheerleading at the time - collegiate level - and started showing up to practice w pigtails and hoping there'd be a zombie apocalypse hah..
I feel like this era of gaming is an absolute goldmine. Devs took more risks and did silly shit. Whereas I'd say from 2017 onwards that largely dried up. Sure there's exceptions like DMC5 etc but most games feel very samey in comparison now.
Especially Playstation. Sure there are the exceptions like you say (Spider-man is one I can think of), but all of the flagship PS games from recent memory suffer from Last of Us syndrome.
@@aaronbennett4767 Yep, somehow Black Souls II, an indie japanese Dark Souls-inspired game with h-content has had a way more interesting setting than most Triple A games I have seen in the last years xD
Lollipop Chainsaw came out when I was a twelve year old girl and it was my FAVORITE game. I have never been a gamer, especially not of hack-and-slash games, but I played this game for HOURS. I'm so glad that this video was recommended to me because it made me remember how much I adored this game (and Juliet😳). As a woman who's grown up as a raging feminist, I hated games that left its female characters as nothing more than sexual objects and I'm sure my mom was perplexed why I was so obsessed with this game but I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that Juliet is sexy and confident, but it doesn't take away from her personality, individuality, and ability to kick ass! She feels like a fully-fleshed out character because she's dripping with personality. I loved making Barbies face the horrors of war and be badasses and Juliet was an extension of that desire to see the pretty blonde girl be a competent and well-rounded individual rather than just some dumb bimbo. And it didn't hurt that she was nice to look at too.
Your characters personalities should always be first. I almost never think about the characters I write without thinking of who they are, rather than their "identity."
@@TheBlackAntagonist Well, representation, especially of marginalized groups, does matter, and its good that many of these complex great characters happen to be of these groups for more variety, representation, and general good vibes and inspiration for said groups. That being said, I also agree, writing, personality, etc comes first, the identity later. Or rather, the identity, if it is first, must be paired with good writing instead of being the only thing about them that the story talks about.
@@ramenbomberdeluxe4958 I see your point, though I disagree slightly. There were shows all throughout my life with characters "like me" as in black. Some more useless than others but that's besides. For me, I related more to the characters who struggled like me but succeeded regardless. Hannah from the movie Wolf Children struggled to raise her kids in a world that would be afraid of them at best and hunt them at worst after losing the love of her life and her childrens' father to a cruel twist of fate. She wasn't black or male. Hell, I don't even have kids, but I want to and I related to the idea of protecting those you love and teaching them to navigate a cruel but sometimes beautiful world. The idea of the universal struggles is what I'm talking about.
Bayonetta and Lollipop Chainsaw are female power fantasies. I adore them and I wish there were more games like this, so unapologetically feminine they warm my heart
I own like three different copies of this game and the most expensive was around 70 bucks for the Japanese Premium Edition. I find it's somewhat cheaper on 360 than PS3.
Man..that is some coincidence? Video uploaded on 13 june and on 15 june Yasuda on twitter announced lolipop chainsaw is coming back. DX is literal prophet.
My roommate has ADHD and Autism, but this is still the only video game she’s ever beaten. It was so engaging that when it was over. She was just surprised. It didn’t feel bleed out, or slow. It was sooo complete and lovely.
Oh gosh as a tween I was *Obsessed* with this game, I didn't understand english or japanese but I would watch gameplay of it on youtube with my dads help. Ever since then I've been wondering what game it was until I stumbled on this video!
“Men can appear however designers want them in games, and no one bats an eye… but when a cheerleader shows cleavage, everyone loses their minds” -dx -joker -Michael Scott
I think another reason a re-release might be hard is the music licensing. There were 16 licensed tracks used throughout the game's soundtrack, and while they could easily re-new the copyright on the songs, some companies aren't willing to to that, ex. Rockstar with the GTA trilogy.
I recently got into Grasshopper Manufacture’s games after being introduced through The Silver Case and being fascinated by Suda51’s genius. I will definitely try this game out someday.
Very nuanced arguments and well said statements. I love this game, but it is a hassle to pull out my old consoles. I really hope we see a remaster one day to modern consoles and PC, but I fear we will see people confuse sexualization and sexism as you stated and it may never happen or may be compromised because of it.
@@muizzsiddique Currently planning on playing it on RPCS3. I know it runs pretty much perfectly on 2540 x 1440 with my PC's hardware! Mid-range PCs or even budget gaming PCs should be able to run it well at FHD or QHD. Can't confirm though.
This was a surprisingly thought-provoking video. I never really thought about how traditionalist puritan views still permeate through modern feminism. Ironic in a sense.
Yeah, you could see it the most in horizon forbidden west and last of us. ( interesting that it's from western games ) it's the side of the same coin. But making the character so that it "represents " woman realistically is ironic. If I model my character looking like Adriana Lima, then it's not unrealistic! At the same time if I make a videogame where all the girls have huge kno knockers I am going to question the motives. But at the same time in my friend group of the five girls there are 4 have large chest. I guess in this day and age it doesn't hurt adding girls with big and small. At the same time games are a reflection of the intent of the creators, so I they make a game where all the girls are flat chested who am I to judge?
Sex and sexuality have been used to harm and control women for so long, I guess it's become a trigger spot for a lot of feminists. Some see this and want to reclaim "the right to be sexy", while others are still scared that it's a slippery slope back to The Bad Times.
As much as Suda51 had a difficult time with it I still adore Shadows of the damned, its still very Suda in alot of ways and I never saw its art direction as being similar to other titles at the time its unique like all of Grasshopper products, Goichi Suda should be very proud of Shadows its got more heart than alot of modern games, Lollipop chainsaw is the last real great time I had with a Grasshopper game as by killer is dead the studio took a big step back not realising a game every year which shows just how much the landscape of gaming has changed and suffered since.
The argument about sexiness and its difference from sexism needs to be said more. It shocks me that "slutwalks" were such a recent thing, that they still go on, but the same people who'd been marching in the street for such an event then turn around call characters such as Miss Lollipop Chainsaw as "too sexualised". Many Women like being sexy and presenting themselves as such Many Men, and women too for that matter, appreciate women doing this. If art reflects life, and video games are art, of course we're going to have sexy women characters in video games. There could definitely be an argument for going to far with it, or having too many sexy women characters, but it seems more reasonable to argue in the other direction at the moment.
I think the only thing for me is that Juliet is still, actively, a high school student during the events of LP. She’s literally just turned 18 that very day, so that’s where the murkiness of the sexualization is at for me. She was closer to being 17 (underage) and still has that high school mentality, so as a young woman that was just what made me feel kind of funny about it even though I adore Juliet and have ever since I pre-ordered the game when I was 12.

@@vivekkparashar I agree with your point about live action but the whole "shes just a drawing/a 3d model lol" thing always felt kinda ingenuous to me. yeah sure fictional characters are fictional, but that doesn't change the fact that we still care about them and suspend our disbelief. like when a well written character dies, we still care about that even if we're just looking at drawings. so if I'm invested enough in a story, looking a up a highschooler's skirt at best breaks my immersion, and at worse makes me feel like a creep. yeah sure no actual highschoolers are harmed, but I'm still looking at a "barely legal" characters ass, not just a 3d model I found on sketchfab or something.
18:09 kinda disagree there. I barely see male characters with nearly as much skin as they do for female characters. I hope we get more skin in regards to that so men can be “sexually attractive” since you see a LOT of male and female player characters with VAST differences in appearance (similarly we need more male clothing options and I hope we get more diversity in women since there’s a major focus in making them sexually attractive and men don’t have to be). I also will point out that the girl with the orange hair (name escapes me) was very vilified online cuz they looked “masculine” and didn’t smile as much. The remake of that FF game got attacked cuz Tifa’s boobs were more naturally proportioned. It’s still not accepted for women to not look a specific way.

It’s so weird how this game just randomly started gaining traction when I just started thinking about it a couple of months ago . I was literally just wondering what ever happened to this game .
I’ve always loved those extra steps you take in order to make your content. Whether it is modeling the pendant of an obscure game for a thumbnail, or modding in and jury rigging a game you love to show off. It’s just great.
As a woman, you perfectly articulated my issue with the modern sexualization of women in media. It's a problem that greatly bothers me as I love to dress very similarly to Juliet, and society shames me for it. So you saying something like this means a lot because it puts my feelings into words
What a great analysis of a game from my adolescence, the last half of the video really was thoughtful and well said! James Gunn ironically tweeted about the anniversary of the game recently so here's to hoping we get that ps5 port or PC port.... Hell I'll even take a remaster
I went to the opening event of this game, had the pleasure of meeting VAs (Tara Strong, Jimmy Urine etc) as well as directors. It was a really amazing event and super fun! Love this game still.
Ugh this game was the shit when it came out. It was a random game I got as a kid but loved because it was just nothing but pure craziness and fun, but was also enough to keep me engaged in its simple story. While I am a gay male, to go with the “sexualization” portion of this game, I like how Juliet is simply a bad bitch who can kill zombies while looking so good.
I’m gay too and I absolutely loved it, so does my female friends lol I hate it when people think these types of games only exist to “please straight men”
I can’t believe it was 10 years ago, THATS CRAZY!! Also I love your take on sexualization vs sexism. When this game came out I was a preteen girl and I was watching all the trailers and gameplay. I was gushing over Juliet 😂 I wanted the game so bad, might I add I’m queer as hell. To young me, she was just a hot badass. Still think that today with my matured brain. Wow the amount of memories this video unlocked omg.
This was my fav game in middle school as a girl I wish we could get more female leads in games that aren’t taken so seriously and that are cute and sexy 💖
Even with this game, Suda is truly an interesting dev to say the least. -Stood up for sexualization in games. -Used sexualization as a marketing campaign that paid off. -Was told that the game wouldnt sell well cuz female lead but did this anyway (To that guy, Baeyo. nuff said) -Came up with this idea on the toilet. -Hates the guard button. -Still made a masterpiece despite it's problems.
Sexualization isn't innately positive or negative. It's just something some people might be interested in and some are not, while also affecting the overall tone of the work. It's an issue when it doesn't fit the tone, while being clearly part of the tone means it is a genuine part of the overall vision. People have different tastes, not everything is for every taste. This is a very simple topic, I don't get why some make such a big deal about it. There's media for those who enjoy it and media for those who don't. What a non-issue.
I wouldn't mind if it doesn't fit the media's tone if it has a point like it's essential for the character, or the other way around where it fits the tone and it's all for fun.
@@shira_yone If it has a point it fits the tone. Then it means the tone itself includes topics that might seem out of place on the surface, but in actuality show that there's more nuance to it.
It’s not as much of a non-issue as you would assume. Sexualized portrayals in media, while fictional, can bleed into people’s mentalities in every day life. Sexualization in fictional media is fine. Sexualization in real life of real people non-consented is not fine. In a black and white world, everyone would be able to accept those two things and know when it’s ok and when it’s not. The problem starts when people who consume fictional sexual media begin to walk around in their day to day lives with the same mentality they have while consuming sexual fictional media. Checking random strangers out, which is non-consented and inherently wrong, sexism and sexist remarks when someone calls another out for those nonconsensual behaviors. A lot of these things stem from fictional media and certain individuals blurring the lines between fiction and reality. And yes, this is a unisex thing and while being seen more in men is still very much perpetuated by women as well. Not everyone who consumes this media turns out like that at all, but an overwhelming amount do.
@@aijsdijdni3401 This may sound rude, but all I can really say to that is duh. Issues tend to form when people struggle at differentiating fantasy from reality, which means it's an issue with the person itself and how they consume media, not the media itself. It's a responsibility that falls upon the person. This stands for all of fiction, all of media, it isn't exclusive to any topic.
Man I remember this game when I was younger (around 10 or so). Saw the whole gameplay on RU-vid back in the day since I couldn't play it. Good times, good times... Then when I was finally allowed to play these kinds of games at 11-12 I never picked the game unfortunately since I forgot about it for a while. I really need to pick this up again and play it again. Thank you for this video.
I had contemplated getting this game for years (hell I've wanted it when I first heard of it, which was shortly after the release date). After seeing this video and the Remakes announcement, I finally went ahead and got it for the 360 ($37 usd rounded up to the nearest dollar, brand new). It arrived today. God Damn it. It is just as addictively fun as I thought/feared it was. Welp. Here's to yet another game I'm going to sink 100+ hours into! :)
Just watched this video yesterday and this morning they just announced the remake to this game so i guess we do get to experience a modern interpretation after all.
This was a pretty good video and while I very much agree broadly with the points you were making about sexualization and femininity in media, I think there’s another elephant in the room when it comes to this character specifically. Now forgive me as I haven’t played this game, so I’m unsure of the characters age myself, but I think sexualization gets trickier when a character is underage or uses underage aesthetics. Cheer and school uniforms are overwhelmingly associated with being a high school and so perhaps much of the controversy was over not just the sexualization broadly, but by playing into sexualizing things so closely associated with youth. I do think that sexualization of teens is really gross and is worthy of criticism even if I think sexualization broadly should be encouraged if done ethically. Even if this character is “of age” or whatever I don’t think that cheer or school uniforms are things that should be sexualized. You can definitely still have a sort of bubblegum popstar sexuality thing without delving into those (I love the chainsaw with hearts in it btw). I’m a trans non-binary person and lots of people in my circles love to embrace such an unabashed hyper-feminine camp aesthetic (music by SOPHIE for example) and I definitely find them compelling too although I occupy a more gothic/futuristic sexuality myself. I’d love to see more games exploring trans sexuality/characters too. Lots of nuance in this discussion of feminism, femininity, empowerment, sexism, and sexuality so feel free to reply and continue the conversation lol.
@@diabolicaldebacle I just thought the bubblegum femininity (or whatever you want to call it) displayed here reminded me of a lot of trans aesthetics and I wanted to voice support of that and to distinguish it from the juvenile shit cuz you don’t see it very often in protagonists and I think that part should be celebrated. It probably didn’t flow well with how I laid out my arguments and seemed kind of out of nowhere but I had intention with it even if it came across random. I hope that makes sense.
@@diabolicaldebacle I also just generally wanted to voice support for more trans characters (even if sexualized well) because trans representation is super lacking and is very tricky as we’re often portrayed as purely disgusting or fetish bait, but I want to see the care of having positive sexual role models that many male and female characters have, applied to trans ones as well
Agreed, while I can get behind most of the arguments DX has, I can't ignore the fact that this character is (likely) underage, honestly, I'm a little surprised this wasn't the elephant in the room he was talking about since the sexualization of a teenage character was way more pressing to me than just a scantily clad female character.
God i love this game. I love Juliet starling. I miss her. I miss characters like this. I Love her personality, her look. Her vibe. I am a gay man. I don't know i feel like gay man acknowledge these type of looks more. Anyway. WE NEED A REMAKE/REMASTER OF THIS.
Considering that Lolipop Chainsaw is partly owned by WB, I'm surprised we haven't even gotten a camero or a refference to Juliet Starling or anything else from the main game in stuff like Mortal Kombat or Injustice. Like seriously, no Juliet Starling costume or even a San Romero school stage? We can only hope she appears in Multiversus.
The only reason I like games like Lollipop Chainsaw and Bayonetta is because of how well portrayed their protagonists are. I feel like a free spirit when I see Juliet slash Zombies with her Cheerleader type movements. All the rainbows and girly feel in the game are just amazing and with some of the outfits in the game make me wish I could dress like that and make he feel like a bad bitch when I go out. Bayonetta as well. They both incorporate their personalities into their fighting so much that I can’t help but smile.
On the topic of short games, I recently played the Ty the tasmanian tiger remaster and it was about 10 hours. It ultimately left me satisfied and it didn't need 50 hours. I enjoy shorter games because as I grow older my time shrinks as well. Great video btw DX!
I love the fact that old games like this such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and the older Devil May Cry games becoming popular once again, older games have a sort of charm and nostalgia that newer games can't really seem to recreate
Great video! I echo the very same sentiments on the matter of 7th gen (and really, all gens for that matter) preservation and the ever increasing importance that emulation brings. When I see a game running and looking this stunningly, it makes me so thankful for the hard work and dedication we see from those that bring us the means to give games like Lollipop Chainsaw a new lease on life and to help people continue to enjoy it for years to come.
I loved this game when I first played it a year or two after it came out, I believe I heard Tara Strong mention it on a Kevin Smith Podcast. It was so damn fun. I hope this video gets enough traction, because a well-made sequel to this game would be just awesome.
This game was unfortunately stolen from me. Recently bought it before it got at a much more expensive price. Worth it cause this is one of those games that may be extremely rare as a collectible
Nothing beats when you control a Nick Zombie...and the cheer..."It's alright , it's ok , my man Nick will F your A!" That and when Spin you right Round starts playing as you run over zombies with the thresher doing donuts...
I remember I got the game in GameStop and the girl there wanted me to have a used copy. Look at me weird when I asked a new one cause that was the way to help back in the day with this kind of project. Yes, the game is short and has little replay value, but it is so damn fun. The interactions, the characters, the story... even my niece who didn't like to play video games finished it cause she loved Juliet and Nick's relationship.
Glad to see a lot of gamers still remember this. Always loved this game and still do. Bought it again for my ps3 just a couple months ago. This and Dead rising were my top. Do miss those days
I remember having so much fun with this game in my 360 gaming days. I replayed levels so many times just to MAX Juliet's stats and get EVERY costume the game had to offer! This was one of my first games i wanted to COMPLETE it. I can't wait for the re-release!
This reminds me of the movie Jennifer's body. There is a more complex story beneath the surface, but because of the taboo of women sexualized, and being happy with their bodies, it was passed on. I love the story of Jennifer's body, she's beautiful and powerful.
There’s a difference between objectification and sexualization. It’s important to avoid objectification but there isn’t anything wrong with sexualization.
The cheerleader and the game Lollipop Chainsaw looks like so much fun, I love how wild the game looks, and the game looks visually amazing. I wish there are more colorful and fun looking games similar to Lollipop Chainsaw, she kind of reminds me of Harley Quinn. Great video! Love the fact the game is created in a toilet break lol.
Loved the history lesson for shadows of the damned, game looks super interesting and would have been better if the devs had been able to work with the spirit of the game in a more professional matter, but EA chose the spirit of greed over respecting the spirit of the game in question.
I was 17 when I got this game! When it first came out!!!! 🌈 I absolutely loved it! I really related to the character. A hot blonde who ate way too many lollipops!!! 😂 I was literally thinking about this game like 2/3 weeks back! They should make a sequel! 👱🏼♀️🌈🧟♂️
Sudas is like one of my ultimate gaming idols. I loved Silver Case, Killer7, No more Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is dead. I also found Michigan really funny, bad but funny. I love his storytelling and that its out there which alot of traditional AAA companies dont make anymore and just play it safe. Hes so cool. I also love Swery too! Deadly Premonition is one of my fave games and I liked D4. The developers (of deadly premonition) went on to develop FF7 remake. Suda, Swery and Toyama (creator of Silent hill franchise) are making a new game together, cant wait. Im more excited for this than a triple a game! God bless that toilet.
Totally agree on the sexualization vs sexism thing. Many women enjoy being skimpy and it makes them feel powerful or good / confident in themselves. All sorts of positive things. Correct me if I’m wrong but the entire origin of revealing clothes being accepted in society dates back to women’s rights movement, they fought for it. It’s that power that they have from being confident and sexy paired with the actual physical and or magical powers they have over their opponents that makes it all the more empowering. Haunting Ground (I think I saw a clip of it here) is a good example of sexism. Powerless female character put in very exposing situations and she even gets forcefully impregnated as one of the endings.
Honestly, sexism shouldn't be a problem either. It is fiction, people should be allowed to explore all kinds of stories and experiences, even ones that don't feel right.
I’ve never heard of this game before but it looks awesome! I’ve always had a soft spot of badass female characters with blonde hair and a spunky personality. Probably cause I want to emulate them in myself 😂
