LONDON’S ONLY LIGHTHOUSE
at Trinity Buoy Wharf!
Designed by James Douglass who designed many of the famous lighthouses in Britain .
One of the most interesting places in the whole of London!Where river Lea meets The Thames.
Most Londoners are not aware that there is a lighthouse in London !
TRINITY BUOY WHARF
The site started getting used by Trinity House 1803,In the heart of the old Docklands, right opposite to the O2 Arena across the River Thames, ships were built and maintained here with 150 people employed in 1910.
The surviving lighthouse was built 1864, there was a 2nd lighthouse at the other end of the building , built 1854.
These lighthouses were never used to aid navigation , but for experiemental purposes to test equipments and to train lighthouse keepers.
It was an experiemental adventure employed to develop new electric lighting technology in the early days of elecricity.
The lights were shown across The Thames River, and observations were taken and measured at Shooters Hill.
The pioneering scientist MICHAEL FARADAY was in charge.
He was employed by the British government to improve the safety in British waters.
Theres a small museum about Michael Faraday on site which is one of the smallest museums in London.
To join the lighthouse service at that time, a man had to be British aged 19-28, completed military service and single, only allowed to marry after 4 years service!
The area is full of old brick heritage buildings from around the time the lighthouses were built , built by and for Trinity House, the organisation that designed , built and maintained the navigational equipments , buoys, lighthouses and lightships that kept British coastal waters safe.
The Chain & Buoy Store built 1864, the main building ,now used for private events only.In its heyday, a railway would go straight through this building through the big doors ,transporting all the equipments. The roof of this building has a specially strengthened floor at the request of Michael Faraday, to take the weight of his equipments.
The Electricians Shop 1835.
The Proving House 1870.
The Boiler House 1954.
A series of sculptures are everywhere around as many of the old containers are now used to accommodate the arts.
Many of the containers dates back to the 1970’s when the area was in decline, and some were renovated to accommodate broadcasting administration for the London Olympics 2012 at the Olympic site in Stratford. It stood 9 stories high, thereafter dismantled and moved back to the area to become “Clipper House”.
In the Lighthouse, the LONGPLAYER has famously been playing since 31 Dec 1999 and will play for 1000 Years!
LIGHT SHIP “LV95” (red)
Built in 1935 for Trinity House,it was the first light ship in the Uk to be converted to use solar power only.
It stayed in service until 2003.
Today it’s a music studio.
SS ROBIN
The Only complete Victorian steamship in existence today,
launched by the Thames Ironworks & Shipbuilding Company in 1890.Thames Ironworks and their predecessors were based at Bow Creek from 1838-1912.
KNOCKER WHITE (“W”)
Built in 1924, a Dutch built tugboat, preserved as a museum ship. It was recognised by The Museum of London as a classic example of an early Thames steam tug, aquired by Museum of London 1985.
FATBOY’S DINER
An Original American Diner built in the East Coast US in the 1950’s.
It first opened in Georgetown US around 1956-57 and became “Randy’s Roast Beef” after being an original Georgetown Diner.
This Diner operated there under different names until the -80’s.
It was refurbished in 1989 and attempts were made to sell it in the West Coast US but that failed.
At that point, an Englishman bought 5 Diners and brought them all over to the UK and set up a few of them in London. This was one of them!
It was originally placed in Covent Garden’s London and later in Spitalfields before moving to Trinity Buoy Wharf.
A lot celebrities and filming has been going on in this diner. It has appeared in movies and Amy Winehouse was photographed in here.
THE ORCHARD CAFE
With a London Black Cab on the roof.
Trinity Buoy Wharf, a very popular filming location. James Bond has been filmed here, tv drama Spooks, Waking the dead, Ashes to ashes.
