I was there all those years ago. Best sport watching moment of my life. I doubt we'll ever hear the Dorney Roar ever again in my lifetime. The bbc commentary is soooooooo good as well. Been looking for the bbc commentary on the 2012 mens 8 final for years... i feel like it's been lost to history 😢😢
I watched this live and the atmosphere was incredible. I also heard a story from my father who was on a tube with some of the other halves of the Australian and British crews (didn’t know them personally). He overheard one of the British OH’s asking why the traditional Australian surge (which was a staple of their rowing) hadn’t properly happened. The Australia OH explained that the man responsible has called for it, but the noise of the crowd was so deafening that the rest of the team couldn’t hear it properly! After hearing this, I like to think the crowd was partially responsible for the British victory that day 😂
I can safely say, the noise of the crowd was certainly a part of the victory that day! Another moment was while sitting on the start line, I will never forget this moment. It's a quiet, nervous place. There's nothing really going on down there, until the umpire calls over the tannoy..."Lane 1 Germany...Lane 2 Netherlands....." It remained completely silent down there until "Lane 6 Great Britain..." In that moment we were hit by this wall of noise that had rolled 2km up the lake - The Home Crowd, incredible. I'll tell you what, that was the surge of adrenaline we needed just at the right time!
