Another one of my earliest videos now, this time it's Barking Garage. Seen on a Saturday in September when the Barking Carnival was on, it split the bus services through the town. On a Saturday the 5's were worked totally from Upton Park (rather than only 5 U buses with 15 from West Ham which was the weekday allocation) which meant every bus was an RML rather than crew Titans. So we see a lot of 5's running Becontree Heath-Barking Garage shorts plus various Titans on other routes running in & out of the garage. Routes seen are 5, 62, 87, 148, 169 & 179. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

My pleasure..... I worked at this garage way back in 1983 although all we had were Titans back then.....

Wow, thanks Soi. I lived about 5 minutes' walk from BK. I was lucky enough to remember riding on RTs for a few years before they went. At the time of this video I was at the school opposite and spent far too much time staring out to see what was passing by. In the following Spring T1 operated the South Park Drive shuttle for one day in midweek, that was my rarest "School Spot".

I grew up with RTs as there was loads at Ilford and the east end in general. I was 13 when the last ones ran at BK. T1 must have been on loan as it was the garage 'pet' at Hornchurch. I used to go to school at Canning Town and spend my time staring out the window at the Routemasters passing by on the 5, 15 & 23!

They were only allocated there together for a short period of time.... brand new crew Titan's arrived to replace Routemasters on routes 62 & 87, the 62's only having RM's for less than 2 years, being the last RT operated route in 1979.....

Nice to see clean looking Titans with the roundel in place. Some dated from the 70s (hard to believe) and others were only a year old. Some Metrobuses were from the disco era as well and others brand new our being delivered. Cars are interesting too.

Barking's Titans were all the Park Royal built ones in these days, nothing numbered above 250. No Metros in this upload but i do have more of those in other parts of London....

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus a 1979 one made it to Sydney from Perth recently, still in red. I went and had a look in person parked up in a street near Sydney Airport. Last I heard , the owner intended to turn out into a street food stall!!

@@jamesfrench7299 I asume you mean a Metro? They were good solid plodders, go on for ever. It was just hills, you were stuck with whatever the auto box wanted to do unlike a Titan or RM where you manually select a lower gear and hold it in that. A lot of old buses get converted to food outlets, you already have a set of seats ready for use!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus was the gear selector just D, N and R without 1 and 2? The MANs I drove let you hold gears. No it was one of the Park Royal Titans, the only one in Australia.

One did live there after April 1979, RT 4190 if i remember correctly. I think one of the bus conductors was involved with owning it. After Barking went OPO i think it moved out with him.....

Thank you for this Sol and for other films. Do you or anyone remember around 1987? some ugly twin rear axle busses used somewhere in UK? Vague i know but just have this memory from being on holiday when in a town centre somewhere?

It is highly possible you mean a Talbot Pullman which was a three axle minibus around that time.

I have a feeling some MCW Metrobuses were built that way. I can't remember if the UK used them new or secondhand after use abroad...

I am almost certain that no new three axle Metrobuses operated with UK operators only second hand examples coming mainly from Hong Kong. However there was some three axle vehicles bodied as coaches under the Metroliner name mainly on National Express workings.

It was carnival time. It used to run all around Barking back in the day. The fairground in Barking Park would have also been on, it used to be huge, taking up half the park.

Correct! It spilt the 5's, 162 & 238 in half. Normally the 5's might turn at BK but from the City direction so this day was more unusual.
