growing up It was common to take the piss out of people that waited at bus stations with their note pads and cameras. But now. years later all these beauties have disappeared and I for one am very glad they preserved a little of it.

I used to collect the fleet numbers years back. Even when filming on video i liked to know what vehicles i had filmed. I think i managed to get over 1700 different Routemasters on film.......

Another good upload. Route 49 would be of interest here. In November 1960 when it was RT/RTL- operated, London Transport introduced a new RM operated route 207A from Hayes Station via the basic 207 to Shepherds Bush. From there it provided support for the 49 to Chelsea, Stanley Arms. No Routemaster availability for the 49 right through the sixties, using the RT buses only and the 207A along with the 207 itself both of which were upgraded to RML operation in 1967. May 1971. London Transport withdraws the 207A and that route s RML s went to Leyton for the 48. At the same time, the 49 received the standard RMs and once more becoming the sole bus route between Shepherds Bush and Kensington and also cut back from Crystal Palace to Streatham Garage. In other words standard RMs again running between Shepherds Bush and Chelsea Stanley Arms, this time as route 49 buses.

I am thinking that the stand at Shepherds Bush is now part of Westfield Centre. Also recognise the brick buildings which I think were electricity buildings for the Underground. On the other side of these is White City bus station where all the routes terminate now, they go under the Westfield centre via a crazy underground road, drop off, and then back to a stand, then back to the bus station to pick up . The 228, (Maida Hill to Central Middlesex Hospital) serves it but then goes out towards Wood Lane. London United Wood Lane Midibus base was more or less where the bus station is now.

Great memories growing up as kid in shepherds bush early 80s. Shame we didn't see more Rms 207 and 105 might gone opo by time you filmed.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
The 207 were still RML at this time but the 105s had gone OPO in September 1982 when LT decided to start withdrawing serviceable RMs and go for mass OPO, one of the first routes to go! I did head out to West London again that year in order to chase the 207s before they were converted.

Why was someone filming buses back in 87! They must of known that one day nostalgia nerds like us would be watching the footage sometime in the future, 35 years later........time has flown
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus

I was inspired by seeing a bus enthusiast's cine films from the 1960s, and started with cine ion 1984. It was very expensive (£5 for a 5 min silent film) and fiddly to watch what you had filmed. In Aug 85 i saw the Panasonic M1 all-in-one video camera. I brought it on HP nad then had 3 hours of film with sound for the same price as that 5 min silent cine film...... I filmed things that interested me, and now happily 35 years later others get to enjoy the film......

Routemaster heaven in 1987! A shame a few whiny M's crashed the party. Another great slab of nostalgia, thanks for sharing as usual Soi. Incidentally, what is the name of the road the buses turned down to get to the Shepherds Bush stand? Are any of the buildings there still standing?
@markcf83

The stand was at the end of Caxton Road. All the buildings behind it are now gone and replaced by the Westfield shopping centre.

Don’t know what’s happening with RU-vid but I didn’t get the alert for this brilliant nostalgic video! Btw Soi I saw a photo on Flickr of a 73 terminating at Shepherds Bush. Would that have been an odd garage journey?
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
RU-vid is a bit like ebay in that it has a mind of its own!!! And yes, the 73 was on a garage journey. After Riverside Garage closed in 1983 their allocation moved to Shepherds Bush.

Among your best RM stuff yet. Loved the lineups and hearing one start up as the camera was away from it. Almost like an animal documentary.
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus 3 года назад
Thanks james...there was still a lot of RM routes about at this time but they were being cut back a lot in the late 80s. The 237s to Sunbury Village was quite a survivor running that far out!

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus was Sunbury Village that shopping centre with the big 1970s looking sign with the arrow? Great scene. I was pondering how normal the bus scene still looked then. Only two years later it would look noticeably changed to the observer.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Oh 😀 It's technically not in London? That route must take a long time unless the RMs on that route had a freeway diff and used a motorway for much of it.
