London's Most Historic Wetherspoons Pubs

I haven't covered any Wetherspoons pubs until now on this channel, because they're mostly modern conversions, and this is a channel about historic pubs... but am I missing out? In this video I take a tour of what I think are the five most interesting looking Wetherspoons pubs in central London. Although none of them have been pubs for more than about 30 years, the former lives of the premises they now occupy often have interesting histories to talk about, and some have surprisingly beautiful interiors.

I know some of you will probably be thinking "What about the Knights Templar?" but it was recently sold and is no longer operating as a Wetherspoons pub.

I was fortunate enough to go in there a couple of years ago and would rank as one of the most impressive Wetherspoons I've been to. Interestingly, it was the only Wetherspoon that could be used as a wedding venue. Alas, no more ☹️

Another interesting and informative tour. I never quite understand why some people turn their noses up at the mention of Wetherspoons pubs. Most of them occupy unusual and interesting buildings with nice features, as you illustrate here. Another bonus is they sell different beers at a very good price and reasonable food that does not cost the earth.

I've found that Wetherspoons tend to occupy the most interesting and historic buildings in many towns! I am quite fond of the "Ice Wharf" at Camden Lock, just to randomly add one london pub to your list, perhaps more for the setting than the buildings in this case!
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 7 месяцев назад
Yes I almost included the Ice Wharf on the list but decided in the end it was just a tiny bit too far out of the centre. Yes you're right they often do take on iconic buildings in a given town - friends keep telling me about the one in Ramsgate which does look quite impressive in the photos.

If it was not for Wetherspoon, then many of the grandest buildings in town centres across the country would have fallen into decline and ruin as their original purpose was lost. The best of the Wetherspoon buildings have been converted from post offices, hotels, theatres, cinemas, banks and so on. Once mighty, solid buildings that were at the heart of the local establishment and high class original features. Of course it's not true of all such Wetherspoon pubs, but a considerable number have been saved. The one in Tunbridge Wells was originally an opera house, the The West Kirk in Ayr was a church for example. There are some very interesting buildings if you know where to look, and they often have interesting photographs, portraits of local characters from the past, local trades and explanations of local history on the walls. The names of the pubs also tend to relate to the past role of the building or some local historical or trade reference. The one in Witney isn't of any great merit (it used to be a cinema), but it's name, the Company of Weavers is a reference to what was once a major local industry in the form of the production of woollen cloth and blankets. I should add that when a colleague and I both retired from the same company at the same time, we had a joint leaving do in one of the upstairs private rooms at the Crosse Keys in London. Back then, they let us have the room for free in what was, I think, an old boardroom. Sadly that is not available any more.

Another good thing about the ‘Spoons is that Mon-Fri from 2-5 they have a ‘Meal Deal’. For those on a budget you can get a main meal plus drink (non alcoholic) for £6.99 and sit in lovely surroundings. The ones in the City of London have beautiful surroundings. Currently Hamilton Hall has scaffolding on its ceiling as it’s undergoing work.

I know these pubs quite well and this video has improved my knowledge of their respective histories. A friend of mine used to work for Spoons on the finance side and he told me that before Covid the Hamilton Hall had at one point the largest turnover per square foot of any Wetherspoon in the country. Whatever you say about Spoons they do sometimes re-purpose old buildings very effectively and usually there is a little bit of well researched local history on the walls of even the modern conversions. As well as the pubs featured here others I enjoyed, architecturally, were the Pavilion at Ramsgate, a massive pub, the Peter Cushing in Whitstable and the Imperial in Exeter. Some friends and I once attempted to enter the Crosse Keys when there was a big England football game on, it was also a pre-covid Friday night in the centre. "Sorry guv we are full" the bouncer politely informed us, so I asked how many were inside, 800 was the answer! The place is huge. At one point they maintained over 20 different real ales but that might have been a bit ambitious as the beer quality could be a bit hit and miss.

Great video yet again, Tweedy! I have not been to a Wetherspoons pub during any of my trips to London, hearing your point of view on them and reading others comments about them is very interesting. I do respect them rescuing these historic buildings. My opinion from seeing these Wetherspoons Pubs in this video is that they are beautiful on the inside, but they seem to lack some of the personality and character that comes naturally with many other pubs that are not Wetherspoons. I prefer smaller pubs crammed with old trinkets and antiques, or pubs that are spread out over a couple spaces (indoor space, outdoor space, or maybe even a pub with two floors,etc...) lots of Fullers pubs that I have been to are like this. There was a pub in Paddington that I used to love that looked like that, but they recently re-did the interior and now it looks like a modern gastropub. Makes me sad. Good thing there's so many other historic pubs for me to try! Thanks as always for the amazing video, and all your research that goes into them!!!! Cheers!

I think that the netting under the ceiling at The Cross Keyes is there to protect customers from any falling pieces of plaster. The floors above the pub are occupied by a hotel and I think they have had problems with flooding (possibly caused by overflowing baths etc.) and water has seeped through to the ceiling. Hamilton Hall also has a hotel above it and maybe this is also an issue there, the funny thing is that the ceiling in Hamilton Hall was similarly restored a mere four or five years back.
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 7 месяцев назад
Yes I had similar thoughts about the netting - I'm sure there is a good reason for it! The maintenance costs for some of these sites Wetherspoons pubs have taken on must be huge - I would guess you need some fairly specialised plasterers for somewhere like the Hamilton Hall.

Thanks Cedric! As others have commented this style of pubs may not be everyone's cup of tea - the large, cavernous interiors most of them had possibly don't feel very "pubby"... @@TweedyPubs I’ve always been curious about them in terms of what was there ‘before’. Which this video so eloquently captures. Over the years I’ve only visited a couple of them when I lived in the UK (so up until 2009). First of all, well done for tackling this! It must have been a quandary - given the objectives of the channel - and the contention that can surround, both the owner and company policies. Overall, I feel this tour demonstrates that, love them or hate them, Wetherspoons have played a role in saving buildings of historic interest. It is obvious from adjacent developments visible in this video, these buildings could very well have disappeared over the last 30 years if Wetherspoons hadn't come along. And clearly, as evident at Hamilton Hall, they're maintaining them too. Personally, as pubs, they're not my sort of thing. As seen in this selection, they really do seem to target cavernous spaces, whereas I much prefer smaller scale public houses - ideally with nooks and crannies within. The Crosse Keys, for example, was massive and subsequently, very noisy! Excellent research once again. I think I may have Betjeman at the Metropolitan on DVD somewhere - I will have to dig it out and watch it - assuming the long-neglected DVD player still works. Great that those internal features are still there. The frontage of the Montagu Pike was so obviously a cinema and it still looks a bit like one inside too! What did you make of the Wainwright's Gold? It's very common round my neck of the woods. I'm not sure Alfred would approve - I reckon he'd want a good old fashioned bitter.
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 7 месяцев назад
Yes Wetherspoons pubs certainly are a divisive topic! The Marmite of pub companies, perhaps. I agree, they certainly have done a lot for preservation of some interesting historic buildings, and I believe in some cases when they took them on they were in a very poor state with rather dismal prospects. Further to that it's interesting that there has been a round of sell-offs, particularly in the last year, and particularly in London. When I first started planning this video I had assumed I would be going to a pub called the Knights Templar in Holborn, plus also I was considering a former cinema in Holloway which Wetherspoons had converted. Both have quite recently been sold on to new owners, and in both cases they've remained as pubs. So that sort of suggests once they've proven these sites can work that they can have a future even beyond Wetherspoons' ownership of them. I'm the same with wanting nooks and crannies. Some of these places I visited in this video were visually impressive, others had surprisingly interesting histories, but I don't think any of them felt hugely "pubby". That said I would probably go back to at least the Metropolitan Bar and the Hamilton Hall again. Even if they're not exactly what I have in my mind's eye as the ideal pub, they are certainly interesting spaces in which to have a pint... and a very cheap pint at that! I thought the Wainwright Gold was OK - yes I'd obviously have preferred something a bit browner. I checked the hops online and it's apparently Magnum, Traditio (sic?) and Hersbrucker. They're all German varieties, which I don't object to in principle, and as far as I can tell not closely related to the dreaded Cascade/Citra which are at the root of the grapefruit scourge, although the tasting notes do mention citrus.

@@TweedyPubs Another excellent video, thanks Tweedy. The Coronet in Holloway still has the balcony from it's days as a cinema. Unfortunately unlike the Orchestra Mezzanine at the Hamilton Hall (i never knew that was what it was for - thank you for that) i've never seen it open. They seem to have far less faith in the ability of their patrons to avoid harming themselves/others after a few beverages.
@TweedyPubs

@@vincefont4765 Thanks Vince! I was considering including the Coronet on the list, even though it's a bit out of the centre, but to my surprise I discovered it's no longer a Wetherspoons pub! I believe the interior is largely unchanged, but as it's not a 'Spoons any more I would guess the prices have gone up a fair bit!

Thanks Paul! I'm similarly a bit conflicted about Spoons, they're not usually pubs I would go to but I think the act of trying to be open minded to make this video did make me rethink that. Yes I was in two minds about whether to make this video or not, and I agree the vast majority of Wetherspoons pubs aren't what I have in mind when I imagine my ideal pub... but I do think these are some really interesting buildings with interesting histories and I have to take my hat off to Wetherspoons for their ongoing efforts to preserve them.

What an enjoyable video. I like that in Central London, especially the City, all periods of history persist together. When I lived in the City back in the 1990s/2000s I was learning to ring bells at a city church, and we would always reconvene to the Hamilton Hall (or the Rising Sun in Smmithfield) for post-analysis. My architectural interests were more around City Churches and the dozens of pocket parks created under Fred Cleary (See plaque in the Cleary Gardens), but I enjoyed your presentation. Subscribed.

Some interesting comments, as I thought there might be , about Wetherspoons. My take on them is this, they are an amazing concept, though not one that I personally like, but for better or worse, and there are bits of both, they changed the face of UK drinking culture. When they first opened in the mid 90s, it was on the back of a 10 year resurgence of interest in real ale, the arrival of Wetherspoons merely making things even better for real ale drinkers ( more choice ) and drinkers per se ( cheaper). For better or worse, it also attracted females into pubs, and later children ( not a good thing IMO) and lit the blue touch paper for what would see in later years practically every pub serving food. The taking over of former buildings of interest, banks, cinemas, police stations etc was commendable, however I do think over time they eventually killed of a lot of corner end/back street pubs in their localities. I literally remember back in the day pubs seemingly emptying of their older drinkers almost overnight to decamp to the new Wetherspoons. Initially there was enough trade for both, but over time, the back street pub closed, many deserved to, as they had became everything a good pub should not be. Wetherspoons is part of the UK psyche now, and it could be said. a certain type of person frequents there, a type of person other types of person wouldn't necessarily see eye to eye with, but the beer is cheap, and if the Spoons has a manager with a passion for real ale, occasionally you will find a Spoons with a choice every bit as good and of the quality of a traditional GBG entry pub, and not forgetting the food, which is cheap, but quite often not cheerful, what the hell happened to their breakfasts? nothing like the value they used to be and quite often cold by the time they arrive at your table. I suppose Spoons were the trailblazers for breakfasts before a day on the lash, and are victims of their own success, with many other businesses now offering breakfasts that are better and even cheaper. Beer in my nearest Wetherspoons by the way is £2.06 a pint, though there is usually only one , sometimes two beers available that I would drink, as with this Vlog, the choice is usually the bog standard, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles, Doom Bar, ironically some of the most iconic and drinkable beers back in the day.

Thanks Ronnie, I think you make some interesting points there, and yes there has been a lot of discussion generated by this video which makes me all the more pleased I got over my initial quibbles and decided to just go ahead and make it. I probably have a bit of a London bias to thinking about pubs, given it's where I live, and here it is much harder to get a sense of the phenomenon you mention of a Wetherspoons pub opening and putting other more traditional boozers nearby out of business... but I think that is quite a key thing to bear in mind when understanding some people's negative feelings towards the chain. It sounds like Wetherspoons opening up a pub isn't a guaranteed recipe for success for them either though. It has been interesting to see in the last year or so Wetherspoons selling off some of its locations, which were presumably not very profitable for them, and particularly a few fairly well known examples in London like the Knights Templar. Several of these in London have been bought by other companies and continue to be operated as pubs, which is an interesting development, as they weren't pubs before Wetherspoons converted them. It will be interesting to see if other companies can make a success of locations which Wetherspoons were apparently struggling with. On kids in pubs - I have slightly mixed feelings - and I think it really depends on the pub. Country pubs with a big garden which have always been quite food leaning are quite a different case from backstreet city boozers where it's pretty much standing room only. I think that shift goes back a lot further than Wetherspoons though - a pub I covered in the video about Hoxton was rebuilt in the 1930s, apparently with a clear intention to make it more family friendly. I think another issue there is that pubs used to be more divided into separate spaces internally, whereas for some time now the trend has (unfortunately in my opinion) been more towards large sprawling open plan interiors. So if kids were allowed in it used to be easier to corral them into one place. I remember going to pubs as a kid with my parents, and perhaps there was just one room where kids were allowed, but the public bar was very much adults only. This is still the case in some country pubs, but is perhaps getting rarer. My local here in London has a no kids after 7pm rule. That feels like quite a good compromise. Although I do find the older I get the more I'd rather be drinking in the afternoon than the evening!

The "machinists room" is where cheques were imprinted with the numerical amount on the bottom right in machine-readable MICR characters. We used to do this every working day, and it was possible to balance the counter clerk's position with the MICR trail. Of course, sometimes it didn't balance: some people were innately a lot better than others at finding the reason for imbalance. That's why banks used to close at 3:30pm, to give time to balance the counters with the back office. I remember when the Hamilton Hall opened after the refurb of Liverpool St station in the 80s. It was such a breath of fresh air, compared to the mediocrity of low-ceiling station pubs so typical of that era.

Back in the mid-90s after work I’d get through 7 pints in one night at the Cross Keys. Not drinking alone, I should add. Sadly the Knights Templar ‘Spoons at Chancery Lane closed about a year ago - that was also a regular after-work drinking venue back in the day. I suppose it closed because so many City workers still refuse to go to work most days, post-covid, so there’s not enough local custom.

Well, the Wetherspoons in your town are somewhat more classy than the 'Spoons in mine. They do have some classy buildings, but the clientele tend rather less so... I never anticipated employing the words "classy" and "Wetherspoons" in the same sentance. Did they have sticky carpets that attempt to deprive one of one's footwear?

This was a carefully curated list, I'm sure there are some in London which can be a bit rough around the edges. In fact even these ones featured here could be if you catch them at the wrong time. I looked up the Hamilton Hall on RU-vid before I went to film this video, and almost all of the videos are of it being absolutely swamped by a very rowdy football crowd, throwing glasses around etc. Definitely looked a bit scary!

I have a strong personal distaste for Wetherspoons. They do have some good points, however. They do often step in and save lovely old buildings from demolition or redevelopment. That’s valuable, even if I find the Wetherspoons formula distasteful. During a conversation with John Warland, founder of London’s “Liquid History” pub tours (and author of two books on historic London pubs) he made some good points about Wetherspoons: they’re inexpensive, they’re consistent, and they serve to help keep the nobs out of the proper boozers. Cheers to that!

Unlucky with the beer selection. Wetherspoons are usually an oasis in the desert. The Ballroom at LST was used as the HQ for the station redevelopment, thankfully they built it as a building within the building. So when they’d finished they simply took it away and Wetherspoons tarted it up. Hamilton Halls.

I only picked the best looking examples (or the ones with the most interesting histories) for the video, there are certainly some in central London which are more like the ones you describe there. I think there are also some splendid examples outside of London - I haven't been yet but the one in Ramsgate looks magnificent to me. Even the lavishly decorated ones shown in this video can get a bit scary if you're there at the wrong time! Before making this video I searched for other videos of Hamilton Hall, and nearly everything on RU-vid seemed to be from a time when a few thousand football fans piled in and started throwing drinks around. Perhaps that's a very rare event and I suppose it could happen to any pub.

Thirty odd years ago when they has a three day St George's Day beer festival at the Hamilton Hall the staff built the facade of a castle from used cardboard to show the event off. It was taken down on day two as th elocal fire brigade came in and said it was a fire hazard!!! They had all 30 beers on at the same time on stillage in part of the pub that has windows to the station, now I think just a coridor to the toilets.

It's interesting that there's now a good handful of ex-Wetherspoons pubs in London, that are still operating pubs, but weren't originally pubs before Wetherspoons brought them to life - I almost wonder if that's worthy of a video in itself...?

Some Weatherspoons are great, some are rough I have few of my favourites in UK. In Edinburgh Caley Picture, Standing Order are great, whilst the one by the Waverley Station is absolute garbage, obivously very busy but full of rough people who can't behave. But again it depends on people what they like, I do mind patrons usually I prefer classier places and definitely no live sport pubs.

I ejoyed this one, been to all the pubs shown here. My favourite London Spoons has to be the Ice Wharf though, love the locale and you can drink outside in the summer. Its a real shame the Knights Templar is no longer a Spoons but its current iteration is nevertheless rather decent. Theres still a fair bit of condemnation / scoffing towards Wetherspoons, but I'm honestly not sure quite why. Some people still percive them as these sort of hovels for working class alcoholics downing Stella at 10am but its a big misconception. They serve a fantastic purpose, especially in London, which is providing affordable drinks (and food) within some interesting and unique spaces! The beer line-up is also generally very good, including their world and craft beer selection (although I know you're not fond of citrus hops 😉). Shame you got rather unlucly with some of the cask options being out of action! Sod's law. Personally, i find Wetherspoons better for a group visit, as the large and often fairly open spaces tend to be conducive to this type of evening. Part of a pub crawl, perhaps. They lack the sort of warmth, snugness and "lived in" feel that I opt for if im just going for beers with my girlfriend, or with 1 friend, or for a pint on my own whilst reading a book of a Sunday afternoon etc. Very informative as always Tweedy 👍
