Fender,Gibson, fender, fender, fender, Gibson so many shops are just that...I end up in pawn shops and similar looking for something "different"...and your girlfriend is a keeper, to suffer a whole street of shops and not plan your demise....legend
I used to live in Stepney Green and would go to the west end with my mates and look around all the music shops, we were probably about 13 or 14 yrs old at the time so it was around 1973 - 74. We was all learning to play the guitar at the time, it was about 1984 when I bought my first nice guitar from Ivor Mairants music Centre on Rathbone place, it was hand made by the kinkade brothers. 40 yrs later I'm still playing that guitar and it just gets better with age. I've played all sorts of guitars over the years but I just end up going back to my old Kinkade. It just has great action and beautiful tone
For someone who grew up in London (me) I remember in my younger years going down to Denmark st to see the guitars etc used to be such a buzz, but as I’ve gotten older, well, times have changed and there’s far better gear (personal opinion) that can be bought elsewhere, but great video
Thank you so much! There's far better gear, I agree (also personally). And to be fair the prices at Denmark St aren't low either. But if you're a vintage fan and willing to spend a fortune on a Gibson or Fender, you might find something that you won't find elsewhere. 🇬🇧❤️
@@schorschharrison yep, very valid point, cos as I was watching ur video the word vintage came to mind….. I have to say tho, I’ve never been a fender fan, I used to be a Gibson fan, and did own 1, but ended up trading my Gibson 1 in a few years ago, these days I’ve got and epiphone slash edition in vermillion red, a 5 string Spector bass, and wanting to get a 7 string Schecter demon, among some other gear, wanting to start up a totally new RU-vid and instagram, solely for music, really getting back into nu-metal and now melodic metalcore, but I’ve got a lot of learning etc to do…..
I used to go up town to Denmark St at the weekend as a teenager to drool and buy the occasional Boss pedal. A few years later I bought my first ‘proper’ guitar in Rose Morris, in the early 80s. It’s all changed now, sadly.
You obviously don’t appreciate that Vintage guitars appreciate in Value. On top of the price advertised the London Shops pay mega Rents and eye watering Business Tax. Unless we support these shops and purchase the guitars, these shops will close so we will loose the ability to play before making a purchase and we will all only have the option of buying online.
I absolutely do appreciate vintage guitars and if I had the money, I'd definitely buy them in a physical store as the whole procedure is a romantic happening to me. 🤘❤️
Malcolm, I understand your point, but the customer should not be forced to pay MORE than the guitar is worth because the shop owner made bad rent decisions. The city store has the responsibility of moving enough guitars to be able to still sell them at the correct price, not price gouge the customer. There is no real problem with travelling 30 or 40 minutes away to another store that made better rent decisions if you want to test drive a guitar. 🙂
Thank you! Appreciate it bro! The Tanglewood sounded amazing in the room! Tried the Gibson afterwards and it was like 3.5k GBP for what? 😂 But the strings on the Gibson were old af whereas the strings on the Tanglewood were brand new.
@@schorschharrison lol all the while the other person in the room kept up the cowboy chords🤣👏 i was sure you were leaving with the PIA3761 Onyx Black💪😎supreme will power! and yes... NO vintage guitar is worth 10K+ in Euros, DM,GB, or USD if theres not 27 frets!!😎🤘(love my RGA622!)
Hahaha, yeah we both know what's good. 😁🙌 The black Friday deal for the PIA was actually tempting but I was on vacation and happy that my girl was willing to spend the whole day running from one guitar store to the next with me. 😁 I wanted to avoid the hassle registering a guitar for our return flight. Planes and guitars don't go well together. 😂
Nice vid! Glad to see you've stumbled across and briefly mentioned Mak's Guitars at the end! They have a nice selection of acoustic you don't see often in other shops, like McNally, Atkins, Brooks, Iris etc, also good range of Eastman acoustic, semi-hollow and mandos
Thank you! It seems like I have to check out Mak's Guitars next time thoroughly. Forgive me, the pub on the other side of the street was way too tempting. 😁🍻
Mmmmmmm Shopping!!! This is better for me, I couldn’t give the shops you visited my money. Great video mate, loved the jam you had with the dude in the next room, priceless ❤
Can’t believe I just came across your channel Carsten - it’s great! I’m from Liverpool so for me, London is like a different country. I love going round the shops in Denmark Street but I wouldn’t dream of buying anything (except maybe that pedal I’ve been searching for 😀). It’s a shame but even in a big city like Liverpool we have really few independent guitar stores - only really one in the south of the city where I live. My wife’s family is German so maybe I should come to Berlin and go round the guitar stores there? Cheers 🍻
Thank you so much John and greetings to Liverpool! 🤘❤️ Definitely check out Berlin and their stores. We also have Thomann in the south of Germany, if you want to see a big store! 😁
Lol,,,another pedal excellent,,great video Carsten and the camera Lady lol, glad you both had a good time, on your travels,, London has so much choice, I haven't been there for years, but Denmark Street is always a must,, you never made it up to Scotland 😂,,,,,,,
Haha, thanks Kenny! Yeah, London is an impressive and sometimes overwhelming city. Denmark Street is indeed a must bro! My girl and I have to travel to Scotland again. Last time was 2016 - way too loooong ago! 🏴❤️✌️
Great vid. I have the 1987 pedal from Steel panther that I got from PMT. Great pedal. I also have the Ibanez you played in PMT in the Royal Plum burst.
A little bit of choice is a wonderful thing but too much choice can be overwhelming.Everyone should spend an afternoon there at leat once though .it's magical.
Cool video, I live in London and have bought so much from all of those stores. Sadly PMT closed down in Dec, which is a shame as that's where I got my dream Gibson Les Paul Standard just a few months ago (I'm playing it in my profile photo). It was a great store
Hanks FTW! Went shopping there a few years back with a friend. Found a Peavey Destiny Custom, which went home with me. Never seen another. Still have it 😇
I’ve heard that Denmark street isn’t what it used to be for the last 20 years, but I’m still surprised about the number of stores and how nice and cozy they all are 😊
I know these guys saying everything was better in the old days. I can't really judge because I wasn't there 20 years ago but I had plenty of fun that day 🙂🤘
@@schorschharrison the only thing they are right about is probably that the prices are higher now as the shops are all on reverb . So there are no bargain 59 les Paul’s to be found anymore 🤣
Very interesting. I know that street really well and bought my 12 string and the J160e from Hanks years ago. There's fewer shops now than ever, especially on the northern side of the street where the bass specialists have gone. The street has been a never ending building site for the best part of 10 years without any obvious reason why. Hanks, No.Tom, Regent Sounds and Rose Morris are in their original locations but the others have swapped buildings again and again. Regent Sounds are an official Fender dealer, I approached them for a custom shop job once and in the process of the discussion got to look around their building which is where The Rolling Stones recorded their first LP. Rose Morris IS the same Rose Morris that Rickenbacker owners will know. In 1964 they imported a special selection of instruments that even today bear the RM prefix to their nomenclature. Recently they had a Rickenbacker on sale for the first time in 60 years. Just outside the street, two shops have gone. Virgin Music on Oxford Street who also sold guitars downstairs. I got my Mk VII there and Macaris on Charing Cross Road who have moved to West Sussex. Near them were the locations of the shops The Beatles frequented including Drum City who furnished Ringo with his Ludwig kits. The manager, Ivor Arbiter, was the man who designed their Drop T drum head logo. For me though Denmark Street's most interesting building is the one in the background at 0:18 Now cocktail bar Thirteen, it was the labour exchange that employed serial killer Dennis Nilson. One of the best things about visiting the street is seeing musicians carrying guitars away heading for the tube at Tottenham Court Road and wondering what's in that anonomous case. If you want a top make guitar I'd recommend you try Denmark Street. Go on the train, make a day of it and you'll probably see all of your favourites in one shop or another and can make the best choice. My favourite shop is No.Tom.
@@schorschharrison Quite right i forgot about that, i actually saw them open for Metallica at Solna Stadion in Stockholm back in 89 with Operation Mindcrime 😃
Denmark Street is done. I used to buy there in the 70s etc. Its living on its past, so dont get wrapped up in past reputations. Its done mate! Im a Londoner by the way. Denmark St. Is a bit of a joke.
@@schorschharrison haven’t been into wunjo for many a year now,the last time was 2010 when I bought a Guild F40 Valencia for about £1500 and must admit staff were great, not up their own asses like a lot of London stores
