Bishopsgate was one of the eastern gates to London's former defensive wall. The gate's name is traditionally attributed to Earconwald, the Bishop of London in the seventh century. It was built in Roman times and marked the start of Ermine Street, an ancient road that connected London to York (Eboracum). The gate was rebuilt twice in the 15th and 18th centuries, but it was finally demolished in 1760.
The Bishopsgate Ward in the City of London is named after Bishopsgate. The ward is traditionally divided into two sections: Bishopsgate Within, which is within the former wall's line, and Bishopsgate Without, which is beyond it. Bishopsgate Without is considered part of London's East End. The ancient boundaries of the City Wards were reviewed in 1994 and 2013. As a result, the wards no longer closely match their historical boundaries. Bishopsgate Without absorbed a large portion of Shoreditch from the London Borough of Hackney, while nearly all of Bishopsgate Within was relocated to other wards.
Bishopsgate is also the name of the street, which is a continuation of the original Roman Ermine Street (now the A10) within the Ward's traditional boundaries.
